Basically what Liitkiva said. I don't think it ever happens here though since we have the 200 post limit. It's a remnant of the format they're using. Just a speculation though. Last time I saw a hot topic was the "Stupid Things I Used To Believe In" thread conveniently located in the link in Antibody's sig.

It means it's been stir-fried with chili and yellow curry. Unfortunately, eating threads is prohibited, so there are no hot topics unless someone breaks the rules.

At the moment hot topic status is achieved at 500 replies so you only really see it in the mod & admin forum.

Post limit is set at 200 to keep the forum manageable.

At least you read them at some stage. :) Too many don't bother and then wonder why they get grumpy PMs from the mods. ;)

Peace Bullet must be very proud to have made what's likely going to be the last ever "hot topic" in a public forum, unless the minimum amount of posts is lowered. I doubt the mods will ever let a topic come anywhere near that amount again.

How did we manage that anyway? Were we just lucky that all the mods were on leave? Was it that compelling a thread? I still don't get how it worked...

I should ask Peace Bullet, he's like, a true alchemist..

What I think happened was that the thread just so happened to:

A. Be an active topic
B. Hit the post limit of 200 right after the last mod that was online logged off.

It wasn't like we resurrected an inactive topic and said "let's break the rules!," but rather the topic was so active that once it hit the post limit, people kept posting, expecting a mod to close it... and when that didn't happen, people kept posting, feeling sure it would be locked any second... but nothing happened. Then we wound up trying to post as much as possible. As I said in one of the posts in that topic, there wasn't much we could do about it anyway, none of us could lock the topic ourselves and nobody would be able to convince everyone to stop.

It all happened in a very small amount of time, and the only reason we reached as high as we did was because of those two unique factors. We were just really lucky.

Well, that same week I also won the lottery, my wife gave birth to our second child, my other child got married, my cat had kittens, I found a box full of gold coins in my attic, and I won three world records... but really all of that pales in comparison to the epic thread.
