I normally play a female character as it's easier for me to rp what I am. My first character was male, but it was difficult for me to develop any kind of backstory for him. He was just random.

The Black Widow perk for female characters is much more useful than Lady Killer for males. There are more dialogue opportunities with Black Widow and many times more male enemies to use the damage bonus on than there are female enemies.

I perfer to play a male character because it's easier for me to relate to my real gender, however I know several guys who like to play female characters. The only really useful thing game-wise for playing a female is the Black Widow perk, because like ghouls said there's more male enemies then female and there's more male characters to use the extra dialog on.

If you're a girl, the perk is; you can relate to your character.
If you're a guy, the perk is; you get to stare at a hot ass while you're playing.

But seriously though, statistically, the only real advantage of playing a female character is the "Black Widow" perk. It offers a damage increase against enemies of the opposite six, as well as it makes some unique dialogue options available.

The male version of this perk "Lady Killer" does the exact same, but since the game's mobs (Raiders/Slavers/Enclave Soldiers/Talon Co./Regulators) are 75% male, the perk is more useful for a female character.

That and (I don't know if it's just a glitch in my game but) Lady Killer makes your male character walk like a female. It looks effeminate. I can't have my mercenary ranger be effeminate..

For some reason, despite being a male I find myself relating better to female characters. I feel much less bound when playing as a female, which allows me to create a more unique personality for the PC. Having played many females through many games I can say that they have always been different. From the good girl who teamed up with the bad guy in Fallout 3 to the horribly racist Elf I play in Dragon Age, I have found myself enjoying my female characters far more than the unoriginal and dull males... One can only wonder why... But that I can say is that eye candy value is one of the smallest reasons I would play as a female, or any purely practical advantages such as dialogue or perks/skills/etc.

That said, it's all about taste for me. Especially in Fallout 3 you don't gain any real benefits for playing as a female, although in the previous titles (esp. Fallout 2) it made your game easier in the early point.

No big difference. I have played both male and female characters in FO3 (I'm male).

I few minor differences with the Black Widow Perk (you can manipulate both Ronald and Mr. Burke if you want, though I haven't). But no significant stats difference. The stats differences are larger in Oblivion, but even then it's not particularly significant.

I think it's mostly it's aesthetics. When in third person view I prefer looking at a female character.

I only take Black Widow so I can use it on Ronald Laren. The look on his face when you use it is priceless.

Off topic, but Lady Killer on Agatha is the hilarious equivalent to Black Widow on Ronald. I advise everyone to try them both at least once.

Agatha: You, a 19 year old boy, seduces an 80 year old lonely woman for her husband's ammo like some sort of gigolo.

Ronald: You convince him to have a three-some with your female character and Seirra in return for nuka cola quantum, which he always dies trying to get.
