Whats the atraction of archery, really!

Post » Wed Dec 11, 2013 7:59 am

I be playing this game for over two years now and have created over 10 characters, but not once I considered making a character build with archery as a primary weapon. I fail to see the attraction of archery and I don't understand what people find so fascinating about it. To me, archery is something that is similar to sniper rifles in FPS games. I guess if you into sniper rifles and markmanship you probably like archery as well. I'm more of a shotgun roaming type of players who like to kill everything that comes close to me. What is your opinion on archery?

Well, to me its satisfying to kill things at long distance. Plus, it allows you to weaken stronger opponents before they close to melee range so it gives you an advantage in high level fights. And, its almost impossible to kill dragons without using a bow first.

Well, you can't kill what you can't see. But it can kill you

So, yes, the attraction is sniping for me. With crossbows

What Benn1680 said. That, and also the fact that when you add stealth into it, you're talking about one hit kills.

But if you're not into that, like he said its all about wearing the enemy down before he gets within sword distance. Use some type of poison to add a negative effect is a great way to wear the enemy down.

I'm the opposite of you. I can't stand charging into battle with a two handed weapon. To me, thats boring. I like a more tactical approach. One where you have to think more and plan your next move. Thats why stealth based and mage characters suit my taste better.

But thats what makes this game so great. Everyone's different and there is no right or wrong way to play, as long we all have fun.

Another troll thread...

Bows are pretty useful when you have to kill flying creatures. Amazing that you didn't realize this.

For games based in medieval times....a "shotgun" type character is just not practical. (unless you deal with magics :) ) You were either a brute with a 2 handed sword/axe/mace...or you used your distance wisely with a bow. I love archery, both in games and out. There's just something awesome about using your surroundings to your advantage and taking down multiple enemies at a safe distance.

Also some of the the greatest/most famous characters are archers...

Hawkeye, Apollo, Cupid, Katniss, Legolas, Heracles, Robin Hood, etc.

It also takes a more skillful player to drive some arrows into a enemy at long distance then it does to walk up mid-distance and blast someone with a huge fireball. The bow is one of the most realistic weapons a hero can use. That's why I think it's fun!

Now if you do like me, not put many points into health, play on expert, later master.

Yes you can one shot standard enemies, downside it works pretty much the other way to.

Exactly. I like the fact that there are multiple approaches to the same end. Imagine if back in the Middle Ages some folks started saying "I fail to see the attraction of archery and I don't understand what people find so fascinating about it". They wouldn't survive very long.

Everythig about archery is sixy.

I play in 3rd person with no crosshair and love killing fast moving targets at a long range.
I also love using a bow at close range, and I mean close enough to do a bow bash thingy.

It's a combination of archery & stealth for me. I like the fact that i can go anywhere & do anything without needing to worry about getting into melee combat. I can take my time & pick off enemies at leisure.

I do sometimes play non-archery/stealth builds to break things up. But when i see bows being used, i miss wielding one in my hands.

I'm an archer in real life, so I'm biased and the wrong person to ask! Bows are most certainly not like sniper rifles, they are weapons to be mastered in a certain manner and unlike any modern firearms. You don't just draw back the string and release, there's so much more to it than that. In Skyrim, bows for me represent the ranged combat of history, and they don't at all stand in for guns from FPS games for me. Bows are a weapon all their own, with their own advantages and disadvantages, and certainly their own nuances.

How odd. I can't remember ever having trouble killing anything flying with a sword or even a simple dagger. Obviously you are to lazy and never tried to use anything else but a bow. i also realize now that archery is for lazy people in general. That whole stealth and one-shot kill thing. obviously people who use bows are too scared for real battle! Milk drinkers.

Most archers, well smart archers that is, will always carry some type of one handed weapon with them for backup in a close quarter fight. Im curious OP to see how you take down a flying dragon using only your sword or two handed whatever.

I wouldn't call archery lazy. Let's think about this for a minute. You, a warrior wearing your heavy armor and weilding your two handed weapon or sword and shield charge into battle and start hacking away. Eventually the enemy will die.

An assassin on the other hand will take the enemy out from afar with a bow, or sneak up behind the enemy and slash their throat.

A mage will kill an enemy with fire, ice, shock. Or just throw a fury spell at a group of bandits and watch them kill each other. Or maybe summon a minion from Oblivion or the Soul Cairn to take care of the enemy.

But yeah, I totally see how playing as a warrior wouldn't get old quick.

I have friends and family who hunt with bows. I suppose they are milk drinkers, in the term used above. I hunt with a bow for deer and elk, and I am 62 years old, and I am not a milk drinker.

When I play Skyrim as an archer, I use a bow and a pair of daggers for melee. I use a bow for taking down dragons, long before I am able to get the dragonrend shout. A mage is the only one that has "distance" and does not need a bow. Wonder how someone takes down a dragon before the dlc's came out, and does not use magic to do it??

As stated above, just another thread to start arguments on the threads

at the end of the mainquest.

How do you deal with dragons in the meantime?

Lol, don't be silly. Dragons always descent at some time or point.

Watch the guy in the video below. He shows you what milk drinkers you archers really are.

Doubtless.

The appeal of Archery in game is the same as its historical real life counterpart.
