Honestly I think the Shishkebab is the best non-DLC weapon. It does a lot of damage and it does fire damage. To get the Shishkebab you have to find the schematics and build it at a workbench using a motorcycle gas tank, motorcycle hand break, pilot light, and lawnmower blade. I believe you can buy the schematics from Lucky Harith.

Add the Pyromaniac perk to that and you're set for life. A cheaper way to get the schematic is to complete the quest 'Blood Ties' -- that weirdo Vance will give you it.

Though, the Man Opener from The Pitt is meant to be pretty good, and Fawkes' Super Sledge is beasty, too.

And of course there is Jingwei's Shocksword from Operation: Anchorage. It's just a shame the thing degrades so quickly.

Don't forget the Samurai Sword from Mothership Zeta. ;)

Edit: Oh and the Ant's Sting is pretty good too. It's a unique kitchen knife covered in ant poison and does poison damage like the Dart Gun. To get it you have to do the Super Hero Gambit quest and help the Antagonizer, then she'll give you her knife.

[censored] Mothership Zeta -- that garbage is a plague on a great game.

The only good thing about it is that there's a closet full of nice weapons, but to me, that isn't worth 800 MS and 3 hours of my time.

Chriso, have you played it?

@ OP, I agree with Sesame about the Shish. Add Pyro perk and it's great. Jing-wei's looks better but doesn't keep up in DMG. Jack the Ripper (the unique Ripper) is good as well, but I hate the sound they make, so I don't personally recommend it, the Samurai Sword is great fun and The Dismemberer from PL, although useless against more than one or two opponents at a time because it's so slow, is really fun because it blows people apart into nice chunks. Oh, and Stab Happy, a unique combat knife, that you find on a Raider in the Raidshack, a house near Bethesda Ruins, is great (it and the Raider actually respawn but it's supposed to be unique) in the early levels of the game especially, as it doesn't deal a huge amout of DMG but has a really high crit rate.

Yes, at my friend's house for a taster. It was boring and I hated the aliens. The concept was great, but instead Bethesda just thought 'hey, let's just have 3 hours of shooting bullet sponge aliens'.

I won't lie, though. Some of the weapons are great (Novasurge) and the characters are interesting.

The only DLC I haven't played is The Pitt -- and I don't know why. The quests look fun Pittsburgh itself looks great from what I've seen... quite an eerie vibe coming from that place.

I agree. MZ is bad; really bad; I was done and ready to leave the ship in less than an hour. I don't really like any of the weapons except for the Samurai gear.

The Pitt is gorgeous, and it's worth playing at least twice to try each outcome; I really enjoyed the Raiders. I think the ingot hunt is boring, although looking for them forces a trip through some beautiful views. It could have been much longer and much better, which is a shame, but it's got The Ammo Press, which more than made up for that when I was playing on the 360. I haven't been out there since I started playing on the PC.

Right, you know what? I'm going to buy it. Right now! I'm a new player for not already doing so.

Everything about it sounds great; new items; atmosphere; great story (I've heard there's a tough decision to make); and, of course, the Ammo Press!

Really, I think I left it out was because I only wanted 3. Broken Steel and Point Lookout were a shoe-in, but I was tempted by Operation: Anchorage's new items. I don't regret my purchase, but I kinda feel ashamed that I put weapons over story. Though, in my defence, I heard Pitt was really buggy, and I didn't have the patience to deal with that crap.

My favorite is the samurai sword. Does a lot of damage, and has an item hp of 1000 making it one of the most durable weapons in The Game

The Shishkebab can be obtained fairly quickly.

1. Go to Megaton, take the Blood Ties quest with Lucy and the Wasteland Survival Guide quest with Moira. In the latter, do the landmine part first.
2. Go to Minefield (Moira will help you out).
3. Find the Pilot Light in any oven, the Lawnmower Blade in any of the dozen or so ruty lawnmowers, and the Motorcycle Gas Tank and Handbrake sitting on a tire in front of one of the houses (the westermost one, I think).
4. Return to V101 via Fast Travel, then proceed to Arefu. To minimize combat, follow the river as much as possible, swim when you encounter a threat.
5. Talk to Evan King, check on everyone, then look for Ian at the Seneca Station.
6. Go underground, and reach Moresti.
7. Resolve things with the Family peacefully, and Vance will give you Shishkebab schematics.
8. Return to Megaton via fast travel, deliver the landmine to Moira, and make the weapon. Moira can repair it to 54% condition at a reasonable cost.

And it's the best up-close weapon I know, esp. with the Pyromaniac perk.

The Shocksword and Samuri sword are pretty great, and the Supersledge, but I vote for the Shiskebab.
I love the way the Shish looks-- in 1st person the closeup of the handle and blade is awesome in a hand-made way, and in 3rd the rusty gas tank looks great.

And hey, it's a FLAMING SWORD with a rusty lawnmower blade that you make yourself in the wasteland. It's lightweight, sounds cool, deals ferocious damage and lights your enemies on fire as you hack them up. What's not to like?

And they aren't called melee weapons in the game, but the powerfists and even the knuckleduster weapons are really satisfying and effective to use. Some of the specials like Fisto! and Plunkett's Valid Points are particularly fun.

My favorites are Jingwei's Shocksword and Man Mirelurk Opener :D

Also there is a mod that adds the Gunsword from Final Fantasy XIII, a weapon that changes from a sword to a SMG and back

And Powerfists and knuckles are considered unarmed weapons. Oxymoron of the week :lmao:

Rohugh said he has a special place for grammar cops ;-; Come back in one piece?

I think mine's the sledgehammer. It's nothing special, but for some reason, even though I was maxing small guns and not bothering with melee, I was AWESOME with it. :D

For Melee, the shocksword is cool, but similar to energy weapons, but since I'm on a console, I don't like the chance of leaving permanent ash pile corpses.

I always carry around the Samurai Sword because of the low weight and high damage. Sometimes I carry around Stabhappy as well since it uses very little AP, though any melee weapon combined with CSA and sneak will pretty much make you an unstoppable killing machine.

It is extremely satisfying to send a Super Mutant flying with a sledgehammer. Not to mention smashing squishy feral ghoul heads with it.
