So whats the deal with lefthand reloading all the guns in F4

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 9:09 am

So Looked through the combat footage from F4 again and noticed that every single gun with a magazine

has it stuck on the left side of the gun. The protagonist reloads the guns with his left hand, letting go of the gun

holding it upwards with his right hand only. This looks really weird, and don't get me starten on how the sniper rifle/hunting rifle now has the bolt stuck on the left side of the gun, reloading with a very awkward motion that makes no sense. Im guessing Bethesda

thought that hey, lets stick the bolt on the left side so the player can see it att all times, nevermind the logic. Lets also

stick every magazine on the left side of the gun so the player can se it att all times.

I really hope this is just a mod thing for lefties but the protagonist sure seems like he's right handed so yeah  this is

a descisison from bethesda I really don't understand.

well it′s not like it′s trying to be a sim game, some artistic liberty is to be expected, personally I don′t mind it, it′s all in good fun.

Isn't that normal for FPS's & FPS-style games?

Forum Dwellers log, entry 348...

GamesCon is coming soon. I keep telling myself that. Bethesda has promised to release the QuakeCon footage then. Hopefully. The topics are have scraqed the bottom of the barrel and we're starving for discussion. Just today, people started topics about left handedness and what hand loads your ammo. I fear if we do not get a supply drop soon, it's going to get ugly.

I think this is pretty typical for FPS games, so you can reload in a second or two without the gun ever leaving your right hand. It would make for a more complicated and slower animation to do it any other way. The gun model is anchored to the right hand for the purposes of animation, so it's far easier to just keep it there and let the left hand do the work reloading.

strongly doubt it, for every one person who care to notice, 2 or 3 don′t care at all, so Beth has no real reason wasting time making two sets of reload animations just to fill a nich "need"

I've only shot a few guns in my life but the few that I've had have always been reloaded with my left while holding the grip with my right (I'm right handed). Pistols and a couple AR's were both drop mag, grab new mag, insert mag with left hand. That felt natural to me

Left hand reloading is pretty common IRL with small arms. Its the left-sided bolt action thats weird... Especially considering hunting rifles had the bolt action on the right in previous Fallout games.

Thing is, AR-15/M-16 are ambidextrous, so it doesn't matter if you're left or right handed, the magazine release is on either side. And you always hold the fore-end of a rifle, with your non-dominant hand, and fire the gun with your dominant. But the PC has it mixed up, they're a right handed shooter, firing a left-handed bolt-action rifle with their non-dominant hand, still holding it like a right-handed shooter would, instead of a lefty.

That makes sense. Like I said, it felt natural for the small arms I had used. I'm trying to think about how a bolt action would feel on left vs right. The shotgun I had used was right loaded but single shell for skeet shooting

which is most likely part artistic choice, part gameplay balance, in compensation for a higher per round dmg

So? It's a game.

I'm a lefty and shoot right handed bolt guns from the left side of my body.

That's how most lefties shoot right handed rifles.

And what you described is the typical way a left handed shooter shoots a right-handed bolt-action rifle, not a left-handed rifle. You didn't mention how you shoulder a left-handed bolt rifle, which would obviously be more natural to shoulder it on your left side, instead of your right. Just as it's natural for a right-handed shooter to shoulder it on their right.

How a lefty shoots a gun should, in theory, depend entirely on which eye is dominant. The same as righties actually, in theory. For some reason people equate, and train inevitably, how they shoot with which hand is dominant. When you do that you actually sacrifice potential accuracy. Then again as someone who is a rare left/left/left dominant it doesn't bother me that much. I just find it kind of astounding people choose to use their projectile weapons in a sub-optimal manner.

In theory, and actually in practice you can still use your left eye (if it's more dominant,) while shooting right handed, without being uncomfortable or lowering accuracy. And vice versa. It's called "cross dominance". A friend of mine shoots with his left eye, although he shoulders a gun on his right. But the average person shares the dominant side in both hand and eye, so if someone is right-handed on average, their dominant eye is the right one.

The only real life gun with a magazine on the side I could think of is the Sten gun:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sten

It's on the left.

Getting into conversations about how realistic the guns are makes me feel so American.

I'm just saying we shouldn't be upset that they put a right handed shooter with a lefty bolt gun. It's after a nuclear war, scavenge and use the tools at hand.

Not surprising that reload animations would be down again, you don't have Sawyer in charge like in New Vegas who was a gun expert. Now Of Course I don't know who's on Beth's team so I could be completely wrong but judging from past history animations should be down again.

I wouldn't know. I just had images of sixy French Resistance fighters from various films come flooding back to me.

About 35% of right-handers and 57% of left-handers are left eye dominant, so while the average right hander might be right eye dominant, the same is not inherently true for lefties (Eye-Dominance, Writing Hand, and Throwing Hand - McManus, 1999).

We'll have to agree to disagree on the cross dominance thing. There's not enough conclusive research on it, though western militaries have been trying to train elite soldiers to shoot with neither eye being dominant. Eye-tracking studies have shown this to generally be a farce though, as even after training, eye trackers show shooters relying on their dominant eye.
