Whats the point of normal clothing?

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 12:09 am

Sure i know it can be enchanted to add benefits, but the only advantage i could see in wearing normal clothing...is that it hardly weighs anything (which could be useful if you want to travel light, to have a bigger inventory to collect stuff it). But the same can be said of magic related clothing, and that clothing at least starts out with magic benefits. So what is the point of wearing normal clothing? Do you wear the stuff?

Roleplaying, mostly. And it would look a bit odd if you went into a town and the beggar was decked out in steel plate.

So you don't look like you're ready to slay a dragon while sitting down for tea with the wife? xD

Yup. Skyrim could use more (not just different color combos).

My robe-wearing mage wears gloves, hats and shoes for extra buff slots. Also, you can grind enchanting by enchanting all the normal clothes you find with petty/lesser soul-gems.

you know, I just made a mistake. I was going to kill the emperor as the dark brotherhood assassin. I told myself; I will go there, add poison to the food, kill the emperor, and as the Astrid says there will be no problem to come back; the path is open and there wouldn't be any fight!" then I decided to wear the Cicero's clothes to move faster.
you know what happened! so I told myself that I will never do a risk like that! the normal clothes are real [....]!

The great thing about TES is that it has so much details. Not everything needs to have a point. You can also just look at it. Besides everything NPCs wear should be for the PC as well, so if you kill an NPC than you can expect to robb its clothes.

Little things like being able to wear pointless armor and picking up pointless objects is what makes TES so much fun. These objects are real, they aren't just things painted on the wall to give the impression of a living household, they are fully interactive and this makes TES so immersive.

RPing purposes as others have said. If I'm on one side of the civil war, I think it smart not to wear my armour in towns supportive of the other side. If I like a certain place, I like to relax and dress like everyone else.

My mages tend to wear self-enchanted normal clothing. No point in advertising that you are a mage and I don't like the look of robes anyway (although I'd like a better choice of fine clothing).

You should put that in spoiler tags.

As for the normal clothing, NPCs have to wear something. And I admit I don't like to wear armor when I'm in a city - I usually roleplay that my character gets home, leaves the armor, puts something comfortable on and then goes shopping, visiting the Jarl, mixing potions and stuff.
Aside from roleplaying, though, it only makes sense for mages who don't want to wear armor. Enchanted clothes are just as good - if not better - than robes.

I miss being able to wear clothes under armor. I spent so much time looking for the perfect combination

RPing, mostly.
My current character is a travelling swordsman who trusts enough in his skill with a blade to avoid being seriously injured in combat. As a result, he wears boots, bracers and the hoodless green hunter's clothes. Playing DiD on Adept, haven't had any ohshi- moments yet. Well, besides that one time a bandit chief ignored Lydia completely and hit me in the back of the head with an axe. Survived it, but I ran like a little girl while Lydia carved her up with her sword.

Although I don't personally switch from armour to civilian clothing I do understand the purpose of being able to do so. The only reason why I don't bother (apart from being lazy) is because I play in first person view exclusively so there is no difference visually for me to see anyway. Might as well just imagine I took my armour off. And unfortunately the variety is rather lacking as well so there's no real incentive to dress up once in a while for photo sessions.

I use enchanted normal clothes on my mage to get the 3x better alteration shield spell perk to work. Other than, the only reason is roleplaying.

My Vamp liked the Ebony Armor but not the helm, gaunts or boots. So she improved the brestplate to a ridiculous super-uber-duber stat. This simulated her wearing the helm, gaunts and boots. She then opted for a circlet, gloves and black boots. Then she enchanted them as she would have anyway. The result was a better look for the character and stats that were on par with wearing a full set of Ebony.

Hi NewFan,

for a sneak char it may be a good idea to discard armour and maybe even clothes. Also remove footwear when sneaking. No need for protection if you don`t ever get hit. Put on clothes when in cities to avoid comments from the populace.

Clothing gives no penalty to sneaking. Armor will make noise no matter what you are wearing. It does not work the same as it did in Oblivion. Removing just the footwear has no beneficial effect.

The reason why normal clothing is in the game is because not every NPC should be wearing a full set of armor.

Bit OT but
I found it intriguing that in The Thalmor Embassy questline fancy clothes were provided to you rather than obtained...
Hence a golden opportunity was lost for a nice subquest where you'd have to find certain expensive looking clothing and disguise yourself.

I think it's main purpose is for NPCs. Same with some facial features. I doubt most people will use some of those gigantic broken Nord nose settings (but you never know), but it is useful for generating NPCs.

Hi,

thx for the clarification. Re footwear I was thinking abt. armoured such. I think that I became noticeably harder to detect without it.

Armour is still essential even for a sneak character. You might not plan to get hit but (especially with boss fights) it's never a guarantee.

My current character, a mad mage (crazy mad, not angry mad  ), only wears the ragged robes he took off of a torture victim in the tutorial and boots he got when joining the College. It's for no other reason than for RP reasons. And I think the world would seem not quite as "real" or "living" if there were no clothes to wear or if only NPC's wore it.
