Whats with the appeal of Power Armor?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 1:13 pm

That'd be nice. There are a few mods that try similar things but it'd be nice if it was in the main game so that the console pe.. ople could have it too.

Also I'd love to see weapons that could only be used while wearing PA. Big chainguns and the like with recoils that would kill someone without it.

The end PA at the end of the trailer is nothing but a salvaged T45-D. The Exoskeleton is visible.

The thing with New Vegas is that with armors having only DT, coupled with the numerous perks for light armor and the various methods to gain the stat bonuses that power armor provided, light armor was grossly overpowered compared to medium and power armor, and power armor was impractical and underwhelming compared to lighter armors. In addition, it was quite difficult to gain power armor training in New Vegas. Fallout 3 had a similar (and more immediate) problem in that power armor only had DR, but you could at least stack resistances enabling a power armor user to max out his/her DR.

As others have said, power armor needs to be more than just bulky armor. You should feel like a walking tank, able to easily wield squad support weapons and shrug off small arms fire and withstand heavier ordnance. It needs both DR and DT, and some nifty stat bonuses when wearing them. That's not to say it'd ideally be without disadvantages but those disadvantages should further the feeling of being in what is effectively a one man armored vehicle.

I'm sure the general appeal is that it looks "cool" and is strong.

I loved Power Armor in Fallout 3, but in New Vegas I was obsessed with obtaining and always wearing NCR Ranger armor. It's probably one of my favorite fictional character designs, period. Like, I don't cosplay.. but if I ever cosplayed, I'd be a baller ass NCR Veteran Ranger.

Power armor in fallout 1 and 2 was powerful. You wear that and it was like driving around in a tank. Light arms you could just laugh at. Which is basically how power armor is supposed to be. A walking tank.

People are still fond for it because of both nostalgia and role playing. Getting your own set of Lyons power armor and being a brotherhood bad ass. I kept getting the feeling I was going to run across some waste lander with tech I want, and just murder him/her for it. (Or be able to talk about savages should be banging rocks together somewhere.)

Mod wise, you can do cool things for it. I had power armor modded out to talk like liberty prime. Based on various actions it'd say something. Caught sneaking/Engage in combat/low in health.. In new vegas there was a mod that gave a visor overlay and night vision options..

I am more of a light armor person, although I see the appeal of Power Armor. I had a character that wore it in FO3 when they were with the BOS but most of them wear Rielly's Ranger's armor.

I thought Tesla armor was pretty cool looking.

My characters always wore light armor in FO:NV.

It's simply a callback to F1 and F2 where power armor was pretty much the best you could do and almost necessary for the end game. We now expect more than five armor sets in our games and so bethesda simply invented more options for us.. Those options made power armor less attractive to those who prefer stealth style game play.

Great protection, especially when you go melee/unarmed. Min/Maxing. Looks amazing (IMO). Classic FO armor.

I see a lot of people prefering lighter armour. I wonder if that's just their style or that the feeling of heavier armours was just a drag. Eitherway, Bethy should make Power Armour a more tempting option. If people are choosing to forego survivablity than something's fishy. Even though I default to sneaks and spies, I still want the walking tank experience on the otherhand, rather than playing without getting sneak attacks.

For me it was simply preference. Of course I like the sneaky stuff best so heavy armor isn't the best option for *most* of my characters.

It was always the walking tank thing going back to FO1. By FO3/NV they had basically watered down PA to make other armor types more viable as play options.

In FO1, you basically had to have power armor or you'd get sliced and diced by the end game encounters. In FO3 and NV, PA was basically a style choice since the mechanics of the game actually favored light and medium armors. It was really hard to top the effectiveness of Elite Riot Armor or the top end light armors once you had the right perks.

At this point PA is more cosmetic choice than a high value armor choice. Slowed movement, the strength bonus not being near enough to offset the weight of the armor, penalties to sneaking, the need for a perk, and the reduction/loss of DT versus small arms actually makes PA a sub-par armor choice.

I'm hoping that when they do PA this time around that the benefits of wearing PA are significant, even if you trade off other benefits. IE, it should be a real choice in terms of play style versus an obviously sub-par choice due to bad stat balance.

Personally, I'm a huge geek of walking human tanks, such as Spartans and Space Marines.

My characters often use any and everything. Often the best gear for the job at hand. Sometimes they need to sneak, sometimes they need to walk in as a living tank. I neither love nor hate power armor.

If the Power Armor came with a really high protection that allowed you to ignore all but the strongest attacks, gave an intimidation bonus that helped with coercion speech checks and increased the odds of raiders turning and running when fighting you, all while being very rare, I'd be all for it.

Personally, I'm just hoping to get a nice hat and duster again. Actually gave Lucas Simms Outcast Power Armor in 3 so that I could pickpocket his clothes.

The original power armor used by the military and the one shown in classic Fallout games was a literal walking tank.. The design ensured no penalty to stats like agility but added a +4 to strength and nearly impenetrable defense.

- Imtimidation

- Strength, DR, and carrying capcacity boost

- High Rad Resistance

- Makes you look like a walking tank

Also seeing armor like that while your lower leveled ups the appeal factor to obtain one.

To me, one of the problems with PA in FO3 and FONV aside from the underwhelming stats is that they just look like a costume.

They scale with character model sizes, they use the same animations. They just looked dorky with the default human pose, with the arms stuck to the sides of the torso.

True power armour should be more like a walking vehicle than just another article of clothing.

In the old Fallouts, acquiring Power Armor pretty much made you a walking tank - it was an incredibly powerful item to have. Very little could even touch you at that point, and allowed to take missile blasts to the face without breaking stride.

That said, I generally prefer my characters to be lighter on their feet, or even more stealth-oriented. There have been times when I've felt that Power Armor just didn't jive with my character concept. I've enjoyed in recent Fallout games an expansion of the lighter armor sets so that Power Armor wasn't pretty much the only useful option available to a high-level character.
