Whats with the appeal of Power Armor?

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 11:14 am

I know i'll be grossly outnumbered with my view on power armor, but i just don't get the appeal of it I suppose. New Vegas made me appreciate using light armor over something bigger and bulkier. I guess its because I like to sneak around and be light on my feet if I need to make a quick exit. PA just seems so bulky and you would hear it coming from a mile awhile. When I go back to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas, I can't bring myself to ever use PA. Always sticking with a light variant in armor.

Whats your guys and gals view and likes/dislikes on using power armor? I can understand the 'being a tank' perspective. I guess that could come in handy at a end game battle. I just don't like traveling the wasteland in a 60lb suit, and its not like you can just equip it in a backpack, so you can wear something light to travel until a battle comes up. It would be hard to carry that over your back!

I like how intimidating power armor looks, it makes you look like a walking tank of death especially when you're wielding a huge Gatlin laser or Minigun. I especially like the design of Enclave's power armor, it looks sleek as well as powerful not to mention it's the most advanced.

It's strange though because in Elder Scrolls i prefer light armor to heavy armor as i usually play as a generic sneaky elf bow type dude, but in Fallout it's the complete reverse for me as i like to play as an all guns blazing, big guns wielding, power armor wearing monster of destruction.

Travelling wouldn't exactly be an issue, it's nuclear powered armour.

It likely takes most of the strain of walking off you.

Well, there is the aesthetic appeal of being a walking tank. That much I will say. It's also some of the best armor in the series.

It's like asking someone why they like Daedric armor, and the answer is simply "because it makes you look like a BA."

Only Enclave Tesla armor looks cool to me. It has that intimidating sinister mantis look to it. I generally don't wear power armor, I prefer some nice Mad Max leather or metal armor.

I agree. I found it very refreshing that Courier Six broke the mold and the game seemed to favor Light Armor over Power Armor, along with the game "sponsoring" an eyebot companion instead of a canine companion.

Personally I just wanna see the mold broken in general. Let's see protagonists with more variety and character, not the "white male who uses power armor and has a dog companion."

Besides the PA in tactics I never seen the appeal either personally, in the more recent 3d fallout games I stuck to combat armour (and in NV case the ranger armour and its beefed up dlc cousins)

The problem is that neither FO3 nor FONV got it right. Neither of them gave you the proper "Oh, I'm mad now, you scratched the paint job!" feel that power armor is supposed to confer.

FO3 had no trace at all of Damage Threshold, meaning there was no minimum damage a shot had to inflict before it actually reduced your character HP.

FONV had only DT, but had that minimum damage percentage at full DT negation, and also had the speed encumberance of heavy unpowered armor (which IMO it should not have had). It also wasn't all that effective against the BFGs either. In essence, it paradoxically had too much and too little DT, and should have had some DR bonus that lighter armors shouldn't have.

Here's hoping they get it right this time...

I dunno, I prefer Elite Riot Armor more.

For FO1/2, PA is my preference, and then Combat Armor MK. II/BoS Combat Armor after that.

Ever see an Iron Man film? Or play a Metroid game? Same thing really, though unfortunately missing the gadgetry angle. Honestly, I'd love some high-tech gizmos or visors to be put in and useable when wearing Power Armour. Make things more than just a boost to defence, like how it has radiation resistance and alters your speed. Just don't mind people complaining about retconning the added features.

Power Armour in the originals was worth having IMO. Fallout 3 made it the equal of wearing another outfit and it wasn't much better in Fallout New Vegas. It's pretty much for looks now. Unless for Fallout 4 they make it rare and powerful again... but I doubt it.

But I have a feeling the big appeal people have with PA today is that it is linked with the Brotherhood of Steel and Enclave. You were the PA you feel like one of them. That doesn't appeal to me at all because I hate the fact that PA has become the exclusive property of those two factions. Other groups should have it as well.

The original games it was worth having and waiting for it. It actually gave you better protection, and better protection to the enemies who were wearing it also.

I don't know, today that is. Back in the day when I bought Fallout 1 I fell in love with the power armor the first time I saw it on a brotherhood of steel member. And a second time when I saw that sixy black one in Fallout 2 on some enclave soldier. Never liked the ones in Fallout 3. Nowadays though I prefer using clothing and some armoring. Probably because of all the "skimpy" clothing added through mods. And clothes I made myself.

My favorite one so far was just a mod made for the third game, the ghost armor one. And mostly because I love catsuits.

I avoid power armor. I'm not a fan of heavy armors in general, my characters usually prefer to be light on their feet.

Rocket Launcher: check. Power Armor: check. Wagner - Ride of the Valkyrie: check. It doesn′t get more BA than that. However, PA is for Heres-a-rocket-in-your-face chars, sneaky ones usually stick to leather or combat armor.

Yeah; back when I was Al D on these boards I posted a poll about this. I never wear power armor. My all-time favorite armor is Graham's armor from FNV. My second favorite is as much natural damage reduction I can get plus the Merc Grunt suit.

Power armor? Eh.

Pros: You (theoretically) are immune to most small arms fire and can bring the biggest guns to battle. Enemies see you, and the smart ones surrender.

Cons: (Theoretically) impossible to effectively sneak in, you'll be prioritized by any organized group (assuming you're not alone), and probably hot as hell to wear.

Basically, you can take and dish out more damage, but you attract a lot of attention in the first place

The PA system in F3 was broken (you could penetrate power armor with a 10 mm pistol)

Power armor was one of the main armors of F3 and it was easy to find.

In FNV they made the right decision to make power armor rare and difficult to find.

I think they should do the same with F4.

I don't think I have even worn any Power Armor in these games. So, it's appeal is not universal. In fact, if I did not have Mannequins in my house mod, I would not even collect the stuff. It's not that the armor is bad or anything, it's just I like being in lighter armor myself.

It's fun to be a walking tank, and i like it when the bullets bounce off it.

I hope they have a proper system for power armor, where there are various means of upgrading and improving your power armor, with maintenance offsets like repairs, refueling and overheating.

In Fallout 2, I did the Navarro run and go the Power Armor early, because why not?

I was in New Reno, and a kid walked up to me and went "*knock knock* Anyone in there?"

I cackled.
