Whats your background?

Post » Fri Jan 28, 2011 10:36 pm

Wolf 3d was my cherry popper. Then of course to Doom. and so on.

Moved to UT as it required better hand-eye coordination then Quake series, Rainbow Six until it goes ruined by lazy devs (seriously it was the MOST tactical game... now its practicly UT!), Half-Life series, Tribes Series, Battlefield 1942 and Battlefield 2. Probably missing a whole lot of them here but basicly the hayday of FPS games was MY age... NOLF is one I almost forgot... until about 2000 I played every single FPS and a couple competitively like Tribes.

Up until the point where they started making FPS for the console games I was a heavy FPS user... but couldnt handle the limited gameplay so I stopped playing for a while. Now that the consoles dont limit the game so severly (Sorry Halo was trash compared to what was on the PC years before!) I am looking forward to making a jump back to online. Was in competitive OGL Clan for the Tribes series.

Some of the decent PC FPSs lately have been L4D/2 and Bioshock. Hoping Brink gives that pace that only a FPS on a pc can deliver and looking forward to Tribes Ascend, Battlefield 3 (maybe) and Bioshock Infinite.

Well, I'm still kind of new to FPS compared to many FPS players (on this forum, anyway), lol.

I think my very, very first FPS ever was Metroid Prime 3 for the Wii. Then, I got CoD: MW1 for the Wii---and LOVED it.
Next, I got Borderlands---BOTH my sister and I LOVED, LOVED it.
Finally, I got Black Ops and Halo: Reach. While I liked them, I preferred Borderlands and MW1. ^_^

I've played third-person games mostly like Tomb Raider games, Ratchet and Clank games, Jak II/III, Mass Effect 1/2, Resident Evil 4/5 and Gears of War, so
that could be why I'm still adjusting to FPS games.

Also, most FPS are M-rated or had too much war/blood/mature content and I was young, so my parents
avoided getting me those games and discouraged me from getting those kinds of games. They think FPS games are pointless killing games, so I didn't get exposed
to much FPS'es throughout my gaming life (and I was kind of way too girly for such games anyway back then). My family still look down upon FPS'es to this day, lol.

Sounds like a healthy FPS background. Nothing too flashy, and nothing too green. You'll be just perfect for Brink! Adapting to the mechanics like the rest of us, and learning new techniques at the same time. Building your FPS resume and skills. Fantastic!

Oh, thank you. ^_^

I just feel so new to this FPS world, because I hear about how people played DOOM and Unreal and all of that good old stuff, lol.
And I see people playing really, really good on CoD games (especially an old family friend who's been playing all of the CoD games)
and I'm still trying to practice my aiming and so lost with the types of guns and attachments, so I end up feeling like a pathetic FPS loser, heh. :D

I'm still practicing my aiming and gaming skills to this day. :)

Well, I started when I was a kid with some of the arcade shooters and PC games in the 80s, with a few console shooters (light gun and rail shooters) coming toward the end of the decade.

Then it was on to Wolfenstein and Doom for a while, and then I took a break from shooters for team and strategy based games, returning to shooters with GoldenEye N64 and then PD. I played CS for a long time off and on as well as a collection of console shooters from the Bond series, Timesplitters series, and MoH series as well as having MoH on PC. There was some Battlefield 2, TF2, Day of Defeat, ET:QW, probably a list of other B titles, CoD 4 on PC, Borderlands, Fallout 3 PC (no particular order on those, mostly intermixed) and I ended up getting a PS3 at MW2's release, then there was MAG and Black Ops, and probably a bunch more that I don't remember.

I don't play as much as I used to but still try to get together with my frineds to game once in a while.

That's brilliant!
I have a female gamer friend and she has the same kind of experience as you. She got into FPS due to her boyfriend but then broke it off with him. But the thrill of FPS never left her. So she continues to play Halo or CoD, or Battlefield with her friends from school. I would occasionally help out in things like weapon DPS (Damage per second), aiming, and overall detection around your character.

All of which is quite similar to games outside the FPS threshold.

With a game like Brink, you don't need mad kill streaks or go totally mental on non-human things like enemy aircraft. Your assistance with healing people with medic, or increasing your party member's damage and or ammo supply is just as critical and awards you just as much as a stand alone kill.

Quiet awesome if I do say so myself. :disguise:

Started with a bit of mucking around on Red Faction and Turok (PS2) as a kid. I loved the Ratchet & Clank series, which is probably what introduced me to guns & explosions in the first place. Never really thought much of FPS games until a year and a half ago, when a friend asked me if I wanted to go to an internet cafe with a bunch of guys to play CoD World at War lan for a few hours. It was honestly quite fun, there was a lot of yelling, laughing and raging.

Bought Battlefield: BC not long afterwards, played the campaign to death and hopped into multiplayer frequently. I was terrible, but I still had fun playing the medic. I was going to buy BF:BC2 but instead MAG caught my eye, which was coming out shortly afterwards. I wound up getting totally addicted to MAG and played it solidly for a year; that game saw my transition from FPS newbie to efficient killer and team player. There was also a month of Borderlands in there and a little casual SOCOM: Confrontation, and I bought CoD4 to see what the fuss was about (didn't enjoy it so much). Since then I've been playing BC2 solidly with a little Borderlands and SOCOM:C in the mix.

I started with Call of Duty 4 back when it came out (closest thing to an FPS beforehand was the Metal Gear Solid series), and slowly moved away from the CoD series to the Battlefield series and MAG. And now I'm anxiously waiting for Brink and Battlefield 3.

Started off with Gunz (I know, early days, free games, don't be judging) which actualy helped me a lot with keyboard-mouse dexterity. Moved on to CoD4 Modern Warfare, and played it religiously. When Section 8 was released in September of '09 i joined AOD and played it in TWL competitively until Battlefield: Bad Company2. Both of the last games were extremely team-oriented so when I heard of Brink, it was like a godsend :) Thank you Splash Damage!

...Wow...I don't even really remember the order of games, but I'll try. Wolfenstein (the old one for PC, also known as the one that got banned in Germany due to the killing of Nazi soldiers) > 007: Goldeneye > Perfect Dark > Halo 1 > Metroid Prime > Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Metroid Prime: Echoes (or was it corruption?) > Hitman: Blood Money (I played in FPS mode instead of 3rd Person) > Battlefield 2 > Fallout 3 > Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 2 > Fallout: New Vegas > Battlefield: Bad Company 2 > Borderlands > Halo: Reach > Call of Duty: Black Ops > Hellgate: London (I would have Armored Core included in here...but I don't remember if it had an FPS option)

So like the title says:

Whats your FPS back ground?

Mine is 10 years worth of Halo with a little mix of Battlefield 2.
Because of those games ive learnt to think on my feet, alone. Yet also work as a team, to complete objectives and do whats best for the majority.

So whats YOUR FPS background? :gun:
Doesn't matter where you come from, we are all here to collaborate and share the Brink experience.
So no game bashing or what have you, play nice :foodndrink:

I played Wolfenstein 3D when I was a kid, but I don't think I get my skills from that.

Really my history with FPSes starts with ... UT2003, I think, and C&C Renegade not long after. I developed a good twitch shot in those, favoring the shock rifle in UT and the portable ion cannon in Renegade. Depending on the accuracy mechanics I'm dealing with, that might make me favor the long rifle in Brink. BF1942 was also one that I enjoyed early on, and I came to really like class-based shooters. Recently I've been into TF2 (with an embarrassing number of hours logged as Medic) and BC2 (which I am kind of ambivalent about and wouldn't have paid for if I'd tried it for a few days first). I also played a Quake mod called Urban Terror for a while, which had some of the slide/mantle/wallhop type elements we're going to see in Brink, although I haven't practiced with it recently, so I doubt I'll have any edge.

For all that, I'm no pro. I'm a good shot, but I tend to play on autopilot--I rarely have real presence of mind unless I'm solo or on a tiny team.

My background comes from years of Battlefield 2. Nothing like rushing a flag with a M1 Abrams giving you cover fire. Recently CoD, MW and TF2. Can't wait to get into BRINK!

Doom
Duke Nukem 3D
Quake (from 1 - 3, including a HUGE variety of mods)
Unreal (and the first couple of UT titles)
Red Faction
Goldeneye
Killzone
Deus Ex (ONLY time I ever thought a console version of any FPS was better than on PC - and yes, I played it to death on PC as well as PS2)
Resistance: Fall of Man

Also, related enough stylistically and gameplay-wise, even though they're third-person:

Red Faction: Guerrilla
Transformers: War for Cybertron

EDIT: I know I'm missing a few, but I don't care enough to bother updating this when I realise why I was being stupid. And no, I WON'T be listing all the mods I played for the games which had them.

Was Cal-I In Counter-Strike 1.3-1.6 back in the day. Switched over to MMORPGS for a while... then got into MW2/Black Ops. Hopefully Brink keeps me entertained compared to Mw2/Black Ops. Not much competition in the public servers (PC)

where I started my fps playing.. hmm. Well from what I can remember it was Killzone on PS2, then came CoD 4-CoD MW2(and it stopped there). Then Came Killzone 2, then Borderlands, then MAG, then Killzone 3.

I've played other third persons and smaller fps's, but these are the major ones I can think of..

Anywho... I are ready for some Brink action, and I couldn't be happier :celebration:
