Yes, they are, and it significantly cuts your windows boot/shutdown/application load times.
Depending on the type of apps you run, in most cases, upgrading to SSD has a more noticeable effect for everyday computer use than, say upgrading RAM beyond 4GB, or upgrading the CPU. Not all SSDs are equal however, there should be better prices closer to the end of the year.
Well, interesting. I'll investigate that matter by October (it's when I'll buy my new PC). I hope prices are decent by that time
I'm migrating from console for Skyrim. I have ~$1600 to spend on a rig. Here's my current plan:
EVGA P55 FTW 200 Motherboard
Intel Core i5 750
Corsair XMS3 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 RAM (maybe I'll go for 6GB, though)
XFX HD585XZAFC Radeon HD 5850
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer
Some quality headphones
27 inch monitor

I'm new to PC gaming, though, and that build isn't quite $1600 Anybody up for giving suggestions?
If you only plan to use headphones, I suggest you not to waste money on the X-Fi XtremeGamer. Any integrated sound card on the motherboard will already do a nice job, and that's -100/150 dollars you can spend on something more useful.
Also, maybe it'd better to switch from that Radeon to a GTX 570-580. They'll have a nice price by October/November, and far more performance than
any 5xxx series, except 5970, which is dual-GPU (AND even more than 6xxx (according to reviews)).
