Whats your take on Skywind ?

Post » Wed May 11, 2016 6:12 pm

I think by now most of you heard about "TES Renewal : Skywind"

For those of you who dont , you should google it and find out for yourselfs.

Thing is, that in this topic, i'd love to get the opinion of the official TES game developers on this project, and also to bring the project itself back into the spotlight , hoping it will be of some help to them.

Also i want to start a nice fun discussion with other TES fans.

So whats your take on it, any ideas , any tips etc.

Yeah, good luck with that :P

Otherwise, my take is that this thread is gonna get locked.

It didn′t apparently. Thought they frowned upon this.

Beth very likely won't be giving any opinion. They do allow its existence, that should be a good enough opinion.

Here's the official thread:

I think they do this with every new tes game they did it with oblivion and they'll do it with the next new game. Nothing new?

They don't post; past not really good experiences killed that off, for the most part. They read, but whether they read Community Discussion or not, I have no idea.

Honestly, this is one case I prefer them to stay silent. With their track record if they were to say anything on it, it would be to cease and desist. Them saying not to use past game assets is closest thing to an approval your going to get, and you and everyone should be happy with that.

As for me though I can't wait to play it.

It doesn't matter what the developers think of Skywind. If Zenimax take issue, that's another story.

Honestly, I think the devs would be pleased; they aren't the ones hovering over every project, waiting for some legal infringement to see it's shadow.

SmkViper has posted in the Skyrim Creation Kit and Mods forums for years. His last post was about a week ago. He has been tireless in his efforts to help modders with scripting problems.

Vsions has posted in the Skyrim mods forum and in the Fallout 4 forums. WormGod was quite active in the old Morrowind forums, back in the day. Maverique was enormously helpful in understanding how bow animations work in Morrowind.

And I'm sure there have been many other posts by other devs over the years that I'm not even aware of.

I'm sure a lot of the time they ghost the threads. Their names tend to bring them a lot of attention.

Same here. Bethesda has already said their piece so I wouldn't expect anything new.

Yeah the "crossover" projects from what I understand are supposed to be kept hush hush.

Hell, I'm almost certain even normal fan works are supposed to be hush hush.

I'm working on a RPG concept and wanted to set it in Nirn but know Beth would flip a cow. Even a non commercial project with original assets.

I'm sure I'll love it when it comes out sometime next century. I'll probably be a vampire or one of the undead by then but yeah, I'm sure it'll great. You might have prise me away from TES XXVII though.

There was an issue with re-used original assets which isn't allowed so the team decided to re-make every mesh/texture from scratch. After that Beth removed all objections to it. Its basically a giant user created mod, if they banned that they'd likely have to ban all mods.

I'll be interested to see it. in case anyone missed it, Kirottu posted a link to the official thread in post 3. Since it's a huge project, I may be dead before it releases....

The reason why skywind is okay and morroblivion isn't is because skywind creates all the Morrowind assets from scratch, and is basically just a massive mod.

Morroblivion took actual assets from morrowind and upgraded the resolution and graphics on things for the oblivion engine. Apparently there's some legal issues in using assets from a previously released game, something to do with the rights to those assets and who they belong to, and contracts that are signed, etc.

For example, I'm sure someone like Jeremy soule was contracted to make music for morrowind and had a separate contract for oblivion, so using his music made specifically for morrowind in oblivion without his consent would be a breach of that contract.

Not that I think these people would Sue Beth, but it leaves Beth wide open to legal issues if somebody wanted to sue them.

I think that, ultimately, it's a waste of time, except maybe as a proving ground for modders to hone their skills. Nothing like this is ever released in anything approaching a final state. Ever. Before that ever happens, Bethesda Studiio will release another game, and before long we'll hear about yet another project to re-create Morrowind in THAT engine.

If it ever was released, I could only view it as a novelty, and as a neat thing to look at and run around in for a bit. I love Morrowind, but I've played it. For hundreds of hours. It already looks very good thanks to other modding projects. I'd like to play it with a better physics/combat engine, sure, but that's not going to motivate me to play the game again, especially since it will be vanilla Morrowind I'd be playing, and I've long since stopped playing that.

I personally have no interest in it. I prefer to play the original game.
