When can we expect a complete combat overhaul?

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 5:14 am

Topic says it all.

I guess I'll have to be a bit more specific.

When will the construction kit come out so the creative people out there can create a proper combat mod? Playing the him or me combat system(whoever gets the others life bar to 0 first) gets old really fast, so I was hoping someone might be able to clear up when the CK is coming out.

An ideal combat system would be one where you could dodge/parry/counterattack/flank/backstab etc etc your opponent in combat, without it having to be a finishing move, which seems ultra random at best.

Oh and spell making, please oh please bring it back, the fact that it was removed almost made me uninstall and throw the game into the garbage can.

fanbois stay out please, I don't care about how you think the game is #1 game ever and blah blah, so save yourself the trouble of writing your really devoted fan biased tunnel vision here.

f a n b o y s seems to be censored, oh the irony.

EDIT:

Combat is a major part of the game, why would they make dragon fighting/dungeon crawling a big part of the game then claim that combat isn't a big part of the game, you are really just stupid and ignorant.

dodge- just move more X3
parry- just have a 2 hand weapon or just one 1h weapon, use block
counter-attack- block and attack after they stagger
flank- just move when they get ready to swing
backstab- run around them and attack

see, you can easly do all those stuff with the vanilla combat, it′s all about the players mind and creativity ^^

Wait, so you want a backstab to NOT be a finishing move? Wut?

Pretty much everything you've requested for combat can already be done in TES if you're good enough. As primarily a dual wielder, I often make use of 'dodging' to stay out of the way of attacks from bears. In a first person game though, we're ultimately limited in what the devs can make easy for us (ie rolling in combat would make people sick).

"Playing the him or me combat system(whoever gets the others life bar to 0 first) "

However you create a combat system, regardless how complex you make it.. isn't that the exact result you will always get?

'Hah! You got my health bar to 0! But because of my awesome combat powers I will kill you even so! And Win!'

Dodge, as in evade his attack, not just sidestep left and right, it's boring and feels unrewarding.

Parry, same as blocking, opponents don't care they'll just hack away again.

Counter-attack. Same as a normal attack, no added damage, no cool animation, nothing but a regular swing, boring.

Flanking - Same as your "dodge" and a normal mouse click, nothing like getting to their sides quickly and giving them a quick jab of death.

Backstab - Same as a normal mouse click, no added damage no nothing, apart from the ohh so boring normal attack.

There is no depth to Skyrim's combat system, which is by far the biggest mistake they made to a otherwise great RPG.

Basically it's exactly the same as it was in Morrowind, you just click your mouse till the enemy drops, nothing about positioning yourself properly or learning some cool tricks to defeat enemies with.

Not to mention how tasteless it feels to swing a two-handed weapon at someone only to have it go straight through him, pop a few pixels of red and he is completely unaffected by what would drop a grown man to his knee at least.

So what I'm asking for is a combat mod that adds depth to Skyrim's utterly mind-numbing combat system.

having ultra-realistic swordplay kinda defeats the purpose of restoration (just like an arrow through the eye doesn't kill you either), but I agree that the removal of spellmaking was unnessecary.

oh btw you shouldn't try to circumvent the censors :nuke:

When can we expect a combat overhaul? Never, the game was designed to play like ti does. Only combat overhaul I can imagne coming is a destruction overhaul because it is rather weak when standing alone on level 35+.
Do we need a combat overhaul? Not in my opinion. Games like Dark Souls have very good combat, but they are Action-RPGs, something Skyrim isn't. Combat is important in Skyrim, but is not the major point of focus, so the developers gave us a system that works well(IMO) instead of rewamping the entire control-scheme and turn the game into a pure action-RPG.

We need only spellcrafting. They shouldnt use too much time to combat, this isnt an action game.

Click click click click, your opponent dies, or if you aren't good enough you die. Nothing to avoid that apart from taking a potion, running or using restoration to heal yourself with.

No depth.

having ultra-realistic swordplay kinda defeats the purpose of restoration (just like an arrow through the eye doesn't kill you either), but I agree that the removal of spellmaking was unnecessary.

It would give the game what it needed to be truly a great RPG, not having to be ultra to the point realistic, but to add some depth to it. Instead of only clicking your mouse in his face to kill him.

I won't even talk about how utterly boring dragon fights are, I'll leave that for some other day.

I can agree with some points you make, though I thorougly enjoy the game as is already, some of your suggestions would definately seem like an improvement to me.

On a side note, denying access to your topic of everyone likely to disagree with you seems like the ultimate form of tunnel vision to me.

Sounds to me like you are describing exactly how the Dark Souls / Demon Souls combat works, don't get me wrong it's a great system but I don't think it would suit a TES game. I actually think the combat has already improved massively over Oblivion, everything feels a lot more weighty and satisfying this time around.

Also a lot of it comes down to play style, if you fight by rushing in and spamming the attack button till the opponent drops then yeah it wouldn't feel very satisfying at all lol, I only ever use power attacks (as normal attacks don't drain stamina) it makes the combat much more satisfying and intense, every hit has a consequence if you miss you will pay for it.. beats the hell out of attack spamming anyway lol.

each to there own, I for one like the series simple, to the point combat...because believe it or not, most RL melee combats back in the old days was this blunt and to the point.

Frankly ya want fancy pancy acrobatic combat, pick up a assassin Creed game.

So you need extra damage as a reward for striking in certain areas, or for counter attacking? You know there's already a reward for that right? It's called, you get more free hits in.

While Skyrim's combat system isn't as feature-filled as say, the Witcher 2's it is about as good as it can get for first-person combat, with the possible exception I'd like to see of making an actual dodge animation if you jump sideways in combat. The rewards you want for good positioning are simply gratuitous damage spikes which aren't in any TES games I've played. Plus, if you're looking for a closer to realism thing with greatswords, then you'd also have to accept that you'd never, ever beat someone using a shield.

Well I personally think the bashing is a huge help for fighting with more tactic. Bashing when someone is just about to release their power attack and he's open for some serious damage without you getting hurt. move to the side or block regularly during normal attacks. And when did backstab NOT look different? There is a specific animation for cutting someones throat from behind. Would say thats a good backstab...

And hack away until someone reaches 0 health? thats what fighting is!! you fight until one no longer can...

Dodge doesn't work most of the time because enemies hit you even when your clearly out of range. Flank doesn't work for the same reason.

The melee combat system is laughable. If you want proper skilled combat then you have to play Dark Souls. You can't even roll out the way in Skyrim. It's a bloody joke

edit:

And just move more to dodge? Really? Everyone moves at the same speed and you can't even jump or roll sideways. It all just descends into 'my shield and armour is better than yours and so is my sword so I win'. No skill whatsoever.

odd, I have manage to avoid a lot of swings by backing of or dash past a foe, I guess I′m more paranoid and back of really far when someone swings.

tho I can agree on the roll point tho, that could have been implemented

Rolling is a ridiculous videogame tactic in sword fights. People fighting, especially those in armour do not roll. This is one of the biggest problems I have with the Dark Souls/ Witcher 2 combat system. Footwork, timing and skillful use of blocks/parries/strikes/cuts is all that is needed. If Bethesda soert out definitive ranges of weapons, so that we're not hit if we see the enemy weapon miss, everything will be fixed.

Skyrim gives you an opportunity to make use of personal skill in combat, what it doesn't do is allow you to pull of outlandish evasive manoeuvres. A simple addition of being able to more effectively sidestep by pressing jump while moving sideways in combat would be a welcome addition, but other than that the combat system just needs its collision physics sorted out.

So finishing moves are bad, yet the main problem seem to be that some things apparently do not have unique animation....

I love Skyrims combat, its fun and i enjoy it. No complains from me. If you dont like then dont play, simple really. OR wait for the CK and mod it yourself.

^^This^^ I've only done Sword/Shield but I find it to be pretty much exactly how you'd expect to fight that way in real life. Block with Shield then shove it in your opponent's face so you can get a few strikes in. Also you want to chain together normal and power attacks to deal as much damage as possible to the opening your opponent gives. Now I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of timed parry function added for dual-wielding, and of course fix the weapon ranges so you can dodge accurately. But aside from that I think they did a spectacular job with the combat(something that always bothered me in TES) this time around.

I think with the move Bethesda made to make 3rd person a more viable alternative for melee combat...
What this guy wants is an Elder Scrolls game, with melee combat that is on par with the likes of Ninja Gaiden.

You know how I know that? Because that's what I want too!

Don't fool yourselves people. the OP is right on the money. This melee combat system is generic, stale, and not immersive enough, doesn't require any real tactics other than proper leveling.

It's almost the same breath as...

Would it kill Bethesda to add some cutscenes in for the main quest? To help drive the story along?
I'm not talking Final Fantasy Overboard 90% cutscene/ 10% playtime....just enough to give even more eye candy.

But still. My suggestion for combat is to use Left Trigger/Right Trigger as shift buttons that enable the thumbsticks to make attacks.
The attacks that you make are determined by the patterns you lay down on your thumbsticks.
You know. kinda like old school Street Fighter Games...

Back + Forward on the thrumbstick does a thrust.
Forward + Back + Forward does an overheard cleave
Half circles do hooks, etc.

Combat could be ALOT better.
