When Dialogue Text Breaks

Post » Wed Sep 07, 2011 7:08 pm

I wanted to ask this guy where someone else is, but he only had an option for King Gothryd. Given that he's standing in the same room as King Gothryd I figured I'd see what he'd say. I had a good laugh. I can't decide whether this is a dialogue-system issue, a bad text file or an error introduced by another bug altogether (like a buffer overrun, since those can do weirdness like this).

The other thing I noticed is my character has reputation issues. I couldn't talk to King Gothryd because my reputation with him was apparently garbage. Loading a game and finding him again let me talk to him exactly once. After meeting with Lady Brisienna it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Hmm, after getting that response from Bodyrick Moorston I can no longer talk to him either.

Do you have a low reputation with the law in general in that kingdom? Reputation is different for every kingdom, so you can be a thief in a nearby kingdom but a good guy in another. Some npcs may like you better for some reason and that will give you a rep bonus but if your rep with the law is low, i believe, it counts for everyone except the thieves and the assassins.

No, my rep with the law in Daggerfall is standard. The changes in reaction from some of the NPCs are moment to moment. So far I've noticed it only in the castle. Some merchants have refused to talk to me at all while others are offering me quests. I haven't bothered to leave the kingdom and have never stirred up the guards.

I'm not too worried about it, since everything quest related and everything I feel like doing is unaffected. I just thought it was weird because I've never seen it do that before. I'll be sure to bring it up if I have any serious problems of course.

Meanwhile, I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for hilarious dialogue glitches. I like poking at the bugs in games.

It can be funny and very annoying at times. I had a unique quest the other day from a merchant. I thought it was odd that he gave me 30 days to complete it. That seemed like a long time. Well, you get sent from person to person to person. I wasn't making good notes and instead relying on my log (I used to keep great notes the first time I played Daggerfall - got lazy over the years with the good quest journals most games have). The last message got cut off and didn't tell me where I was to go. I was so bummed as it was a unique quest (to me) and I was laughing that I was being sent from one person to another than another.

I had one yesterday from the mages guiold in Newtower. The guy told me to get some research off a lady in another, say, Stokworth. So he says she's staying in a place called "Best Sundries of Newtower." Hmm, that can't be right. I'm already in Newtower! So I go to Stokworth and the place is actually called "Best Sundries of Stokworth!" This is a glitch that sounds exactly like the same sort of mistake a person would really make. Beats me why the lady was staying in a general store. Also wasn't really in Stokworth, but I forget where.
