So when did I murder 9 people?

Post » Tue Feb 23, 2016 10:23 am

So every now and then I go through my stats tab in the pipboy, and I was in the "crime" tab yesterday and saw that I had 9 murders. After 483 hours I have never knowingly murdered anyone (honest, officer), let alone 9 people. I snipe a lot, but I'm careful not to target an innocent. Fire fights during a settlement defense, I'm also as careful as possible, usually switching to Vats, but I suppose I could have inadvertently killed a settler. But not 9. I literally went from 0 murders to 9 sometime after patch 3.1. I realize that it probably doesn't mean that much, as there is no real reputation to maintain. And as Piper is my constant companion, I'm sure she would not have approved. Even when I played a thief character in Oblivion & Skyrim I took care never to murder anyone. It's just one of the criteria that I set for my characters.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with Covenant, back some 400 hours ago, when I freed Amelia, then returned to Covenant and had the whole village attack me and I was forced to kill them all. Seems like there was about 8 or 9 of them. But that wasn't murder, that was self defense, but I'm wondering if the game considers it differently.

Just curious if anyone else had this happen, of if you might have an idea why I'm being given credit for murders I didn't commit.

Covenant is probably when it happened. You could have broken contact and run away, but if you stayed to kill them all, those are probably the murders.

I have wondered about this also. All 4 of my characters are good or mostly good, and I have noticed that they all have 3 or 4 "murders" although I have never purposely murdered anyone. Only 2 of them have done

Spoiler
Human Error and both times never returned to Covenant.

Diamond City Blues can grant some murders i guess. I am guessing named NPC's that are otherwise friendly counts as murders if killed?

There are some npcs that show up in red in vats that aren't hostile. Could be you sniped some of those.

Allso a lot of scavengers will warn you to stay back before becoming hostile, maybe killing those counts as murder? Dunno.

I didn't think about the named NPC's dying, that could be part of it to. After a brutal attack on the Slog by super mutants, 2 named NPC's were dead; Diedra and Arlen. I don't know if I killed them because I was using a lot of explosives, but that would be a possibility.

Could be gunners. Not all of them are automatically hostile, so if you kill them before they turn hostile the game might count them as murders. You could also be getting credit for NPC actions in the same cell as you.

I dunno if this is a one-time bug, but I realized dug-in Mirelurks are shown as "green/friendly" in VATS. After I sneak-killed it (using a .50 Hunting Rifle and the lvl 2 Penetrator perk), I scored a murder in my statistics.

One way or the other: You probably did not kill anyone innocent, it was just the game being confused about its own rules.

Gunners could be part of my issue also, I know I've sniped several of them when they had camps up on interstate bridges. Seems as if I haven't been as cautious as I thought. I've taken the approach that if I'm in Vats, and my target is in red, they're dead.

I agree this is strange. I happened to check my stats a couple of days ago and I have 8 murders. I have not been to Covenant. Can the game be counting murders done by your companion? Or maybe settler allies? Very strange, I always check in VATS that the target is hostile.

At the end of Call to Arms (the quest with Danse at Arc Jet), killing the final 4 synths inexplicably counts as murder. Reloaded a couple of times to troubleshoot, and, yep, my stats went from 0 to 4 every time. Finally decided to let Danse take them out by himself while I hid in the elevator. xD

I've killed everyone in covenant and I've only got 2 murders.

I've killed several scavengers that have suddenly turned hostile toward me, so it's not them either.

The last time I checked my stats, I had 4 murders. I know of 2 I killed by mistake. I was cleaning out Quincy Ruins and looking for gunners still alive while sneaking through town. I saw 2 people and after killing them I checked their bodies to discover that they were caravan guards. Oops.

This happens a lot because of scavers in the wasteland, too. They're supposed to draw their weapons and warn you off before turning hostile. Sometimes they seem to just charge in firing, and they do appear as hostile on your compass. However, I believe if you kill them before they've told you to "Back off!" a bunch of times, it still counts as a murder, as they've never been flagged as hostiles in the game's scripts...even if they turn hostile. Just a small bug.

I, much to my dismay, discovered this one too. svcks. What svcks even more is some of the other things others have pointed out. Was stressing me out to the point I was looking after every single fight... I gave up. I care exactly as much as every other being in the game.

I just put down some triggermen, one of which as warning me to stay back. He was highlighted in red, his two pals were in green. Even though they are triggermen, they count as murders.

Then there's the scavengers that want to pillage that boat... I saw where everything was going and preemptively put them down. This didn't stop later events from transpiring, and gave me a murder count to boot.

Gotta break a few eggs, sometimes.

I noticed this in my stats too. It cracked me up that I murdered eight people but never trespassed to do it.

I don`t think so. I killed all Covenant settlers and I had zero murders after it.

I`v noticed that if you kill some enemies before they turn hostile, it can be counted as a murder sometimes. It happened to me in the location where you meet Cait. I started to shoot raiders before they noticed me and turned hostile/red , so the first kill was counted as a murder.

I reloaded and replayed...Just for the sake of having no murders in my list :) .

After a while I again noticed a murder in my stats. I don`t know whom I killed, but it was not a settler or any inocent person.

For almost all of the game, I've sat at only 4 murders, which was fairly early in the game when that number was up. Only ever went up after doing the End of the Line quest. But even then, counting all of those you kill, the numbers still don't add up as some of the kills didn't count as murder. Killed plenty of unaware scavvers throughout the game and it never counted towards it either.

Defining murder is hard in the post-apocalyptic world apparently.

Agree! My first playthrough, super good-guy, had fourteen murders heheh...
Gotta be real careful about killing folks at long range.
One time I saw a bunch of raiders grouped under a bridge and threw a plasma grenade.
The dead Trader, caravan guards and the poor Brahmin with its legs blown off shocked me. OOPS...
Now (in new playthroughs) I am super-careful - but I see my new guy has one murder!
Haven't a clue who it could be though...
