When did the Aldmer become Altmer?

Hi guys,

Ive been doing some research on the difference between Aldmer and Altmer, specifically when one became the other, but also the major differences between them, but I cant find any definitive sources.

I can find texts that talk about clan Direnni being Aldmer, but in my mind that cant be right.
Clan Direnni colonised High Rock in the early First Era, surely the split occured in the Dawn?
Or am I thinking wrongly?

A theory I have is that the Aldmer no longer were Aldmer when the first exodus occured and the elven race was no longer literally or spiritually whole. That would place the distinction at the time the Dwemer left Summerset, I think.

Another point Id like to raise is the definition of Chimer.
Ive often thought that Chimer, changed folk, simply refers to any elven group split from the main Summerset one.
In that definition the Trinimac elves would be Chimer until they changed into Orsimer, as the Dunmer were Chimer before they changed.
The Dwemer then would have been Chimer until they settled into Dwemereth and developed their philosophy from the points of contention that led them to split from the main group.

Chimer can not mean those that became the Dunmer, as we know about a Chimer clan still surviving,
The Chimiri-qua? (spelling)

So my questions are:

-When did Aldmer become Altmer? Is this a Dawn Era thing?

-What are the major differences between Aldmer and Altmer? If Altmer stayed on Summerset all along, why arent they Aldmer anymore?

-Are the Direnni Altmer or Aldmer? Are they Altmer now but used to be Aldmer while all the time being Direnni? When did they change?

-What is the definition of Chimer? Am I correct in my assumption or is meant specifically the group that split with Veloth? If so, why didnt Orsimer or Dwemer or the others used to be Chimer?

Thank you for your thoughts and insights

My understanding is that the term Chimer specifically refers to the elves and the descendants of those elves who left with the Prophet Veloth. However, not all Chimer were of one mind with the Chimer who settled Morrowind (as pointed out by the Nu-Mantia Intercepts). Those Chimer who abandoned Veloth's exodus, or, in the case of the Chimer-quey, never stopped at Resdayn, remain Chimer because of their cultural split with the exodites.
