I lost my follower, I think he's waiting somewhere and I can't remember where or even doing it.
He's Ahtar, if it's dependent on who the follower is.

I think they stop waiting after 3 days.

Any glitches or other possibilities as to what has happened to him?

I used this trick all the time when I wanted to solo for the annoying hire and dismiss bug which wouldn't allow a follower to carry anything or trade for new gear. Every time you hire and dismiss, the original gear duplicates, which over time doesn't allow followers to carry loot or trade for new gear. 1.9 can't get here fast enough.

Check his house in Solitude. He is pretty buggy from what I read at uesp.

I don't even care about him, I'm dropping him after this, but I can't get other followers until I find him....!

Which dungeon did you leave him at? Broken Oar Grotto is pretty buggy for followers. He still might be in Broken Oar Grotto or another Dungeon. Check Castle Dour in the basemant.

If all else fails travel to another hold and use the wait function 3-5 days again.

I mean the solitude doungens he works at, the one you just told me to check.

he was in hte jarls house in whiterun (FOR NO REASON)
not waiting, he immediately came to me as if nothing has changed.
Screw Ahtar, never get him as a follower, just get his axe and LEAVE.
