When modding goes wrong

Post » Sun Dec 20, 2009 10:37 am

Okay - I often post in the screenshot thread and normally have everything composed - today is not one of those cases - now as BHL and Cyrano will attest I am no scripter but lately I've been willing to push myself to try new things however a scheduling script I tried on one of my guards today literally had her coming apart at the seams something I didn't think was possible

I think the Setatstart command disagreed with her :(

Has anyone else had any recent modding disasters?

Please no - I never backed my mod up and lost everything stories - I still haven't recovered from mourning for Trainwiz

That is pretty messed up. :P

Yesterday I was modelling some tree's for skyrim and trying to make billboard style leaves. When i tested the tree in game it was just spinning around ludicrously fast on the spot. I have no idea why though

Didnt have fraps running else i would have uploaded a video

I actually haven't had any crazy in-game oddities yet , however back when I played on the Xbox ver my favorite glitch was entire towns disappearing, leaving nothing but the land, some NPC's and sometimes a few floating doors.

It isn't recent and I haven't uncounted it personally, but if you use Pursuit Enhanced and mess up your load order you get headless naked redguards running around :P

You know that gives me an idea to exploit your new found MW engine 'feature' - with the right offsets and scripted projections we could have exploding NPCs. :chaos:

while I do recognize your pretty face...how on earth did you get that? I mean, that your "armour" would make you invisible I would kind of not understand - - but it seems to cancel out the tapestry which is already in the background?! cool thread!

It cancels out the tapestry because the "invisible skirt" has transparency, and is in front of the tapestry,
and the tapestry itself has transparency.

The tapestries have transparency, so that they can be "see-through" at the edges of the mesh,
so that they look like hanging cloth in-game, rather than like a stiff rectangle.
(Some of them also use this to have holes and rips in the fabric, so that they look old and worn-out.)

Transparency in Morrowind is achieved through the use of what is known as "alpha-channels".
Due to the way Morrowind's graphics system works, two alpha-channels cannot overlap.

As a result, if one object with alpha-channel rendering passes over another, the second one loses it's alpha,
and disappears, at least in the part that is covered by the first object.
Blame the system for not being capable of multiple transparency layering.

I hope this was at least informative, if not helpful. ;)

it's a recolour of westlys interpretation of louis rins faces (ren made the http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?id=4187&view=Mods.Detail, westly http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6173 them and i http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc288/SisterV/orcheads2.jpg these for my orcs). all i use is ms paint, irfan and dxtbmp for this. oh and the textures of westlys and cappuccines http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6825 to get the matching color. it isn't that difficult, i do this http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae224/mwscreen/galleere5.jpg.

but btt:

The good old underwater hair syndrome. ;)

I have always been wondering if it was possible to cure this behavior somehow. Maybe in a future version of MGE or MCP.

OpenMW is more likely to fix it me thinks :)

What about trees that have lots of planes? They use alpha channels but don't do that

They do lose their alpha if the planes intersect. Found that out a while back when I was making a treehouse for a Bosmer character. :(

I had a companion a while back that lost the middle of his groin and the inner half of each thigh when he cast chameleon or invisibility. He looked like the censors had been at him.

There was some talk about adding in support for them in the 3ds max niftools importer/exporter 3.5 pre-release thread, but no news of it being added in, so AFAIK you can't.
Just make them in Blender or convert the nodes to billboard nodes in NifSkope, either way is easy enough. :)

I have no idea.
Note though how the pyjama top is floating in the air above the NPC, wholly intact. It is the NPC's vanilla skirt that has exploded.

Apparently my PJs aim to be the most popular piece of clothing on Vvardenfell by destroying the competition.

I don't feel so bad now - I guess that's what happens when you try and introduce bunnies to MW

I once leveled whole cities to dust with a bad teleportation script. During my tests, I completely wiped Balmora off the map, as well as Sadrith Mora, and a few other towns I tried to visit.

I no longer have a screenshot, but one time I ended up trying a test with a dirty save, and I ended up with two Golden Saints with their scales somehow royally screwed up. The first one was twice its normal size and the second one was half its size. So I ended up with a team of Golden Saints attacking me, the giant one in front clobbering me, and the little pint sized one nipping at my ankles from behind. It was the most hilarious battle I'd ever had.

Another time, I turned my companion inside out with a bad teleportation script. I mean, completely inside out from head to toe. My Telvanni character really needs to stop experimenting with teleportation magic. The horrors I've caused to the general population of Morrowind has probably earned him a death sentence from the Tribunal Temple.

No, you definitely need to keep it up with your teleportation experimentation - it's hilarious.
Not... not really hilarious for anyone unfortunate enough to actually be within your character's general vicinity, though...

Through my experiments I also learned that vampire companions need to wear special magical helmets when teleporting, or else their heads disappear. I really should write a book on advanced teleportation magic. My Telvanni has certainly learned a lot, and would like to share it with the world in order to gain fame and glory as one of the greatest wizards of our time. Sure, he's destroyed whole towns in the process, and damaged a few people irrevocably, (his apprentice is now like a ghost, turned inside-out he can only follow his master blindly, unable to speak, silently screaming for release, but he cannot be killed or even touched. Hands go right through him, as though he were partially trapped on another plane of existence.) But hey, it's all in the name of progress.

I did have a quick go at making them into billboards in nifskope, but I hate nifskope, I only ever use it for viewing meshes or changing texture paths

Last night I decided I was sick of losing my extra GCD-added magicka, so I tried to fix it - only I was tired and irritable and didn't bother actually reading the scripts to find out what they did. In the circumstances I suppose I did pretty well, but http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w301/melian_vanye/MW/MGEScreen0001.jpg.
