When/if TES V is announced

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:17 am

Kind of a cumbersome title, I know. There's a thread over at the Fallout-section about New Vegas, whether or not people want to learn about spoilers or not before the game is released. So imagine TES V has now been announced, and the following months we will see a teaser trailer, gameplay videos, dev interviews, articles etc. Do you think would want to follow all that, and then be "spoiled" about how the game looks and plays? Or would you consciously shy away from all that, to keep as much of the game as possible fresh and a surprise?

I always know what I get myself into, by reading previews, hands-on videos, interviews, and finally reviews. I definitely will bask in all the pre-release info. I don't consider it a spoiler, I consider it an enhancement. :D

Although I know a lot of people which think its best to just keep away from it until release, I guess they want more of a surprise.

I would take all that is mentioned with a grain of salt, after all that was promised for Oblivion I don't want to get all overhyped again.

I want to know the basics, like the type of combat system they use, that sort of things. I don't care for details about any particular quests or artifacts, those things I'll see for myself.

Same here. After the biggest game dissappointment in 5 years, ive left myselfwith no expectations with the next release.

- Boy they really screwed us up!

Please don't turn this into an Oblivion bashing thread, I wasn't thinking in the lines of expectations. More in the lines of spoilers. :)

I would read everything I could find, and then maybe feel a bit deflated when there were no surprises :P But do you get massive, BruceWilliswasaghostallalong-type spoilers before a game is released? I figure there is only so much people can find out from a game nobody has yet, and there would be plenty more to discover once you actually got it. With these types of games I always find it's the little details that make them firm favourites, rather than the main plot and other big features that are most likely to be spoiled. Spoilered? I need coffee.

It's really hard to say. At one end of the spectrum I know I want to keep every bit of spoiling out and experience it for myself and limit to the occasional reading of features or viewing of screenshots. The other half will be anticipating every aspect of the game and unable to patiently wait, and I'll devour every source of information that becomes readily available.

I know what you mean, Makkura. I think that for TES V, I will probably absorb every little tidbit of info I can get. Well, except for obvious main story spoilers, of course, should there be any of those. Partly I want to gather a lot of info so I don't unconsciously go around expecting Oblivion 2. The more I know about any changes to gameplay from previous TES-games, the less likely I am to become disappointment because I thought the game was something it wasn't.

All I need to know is that they're making a new TES and maybe see a few screenshots and get some basic info.

A free demo that was basically one dungeon.

Hell having a little "demo town" would even work.
I guess they "NO we won't do it" point there would rather be that they'd have to release a part of their new engine in advance meaning some "creative" minds could already "plan ahead".

Though if they REALLY want to be modder friendly they won't make the engine a book with 700 seals again, it took years to crack Morrowinds coding and Oblivions was even more a mess in some points. Just give us something easily accessible and flexible, the modding community for TES is HUGE and they want tools they can actually use.

As I said in the New Vegas thread about a similar subject, I don't mind learning a bit about how the game looks and plays, in fact, I'd say that's a good thing because it helps me decide if it interests me or not, granted, I'm not in doubt as to whether I'll play the Elder Scrolls V if it ever gets released at this point, but that's because I've enjoyed past Elder Scrolls games so far, so I expect good things from future ones too. If I had never played an Elder Scrolls game before, though, I'd need a bit more information before passing that judgement, and even when I fully expect to play the game, I don't mind knowing a bit about what I'll be getting into before playing it. Now if some later plot events that might be meant to be a surprise are spoiled, than that would bother me, especially if I find out how it ends before playing it, I also don't want things like the location of unique artifacts to be spoiled. These are the kind of spoilers that really bother me, because knowing what the gameplay or graphics are like before playing the game won't hurt the experience that muvh for me, if anything, it could be a good thing, as if Bethesda keeps following their past trend of making major alterations to the gameplay mechanics and overall feel of the game, if I still expect a game that will be like Oblivion when I play it, the results could come as quite a shock. But when it comes to the story, I usually want to be surprised, and knowing how it ends before hand can make me enjoy it less. In some cases, that sort of thing even prevents me from finishing the story because I don't like the sound of the ending that was spoiled for me and would rather leave the story unfinished than have it ruined by an unsatisfying ending. And I don't want to know where unique items are because I want to stumble upon them while exploring, not go to find them as soon as I think I'm ready, it's much more interesting when I have to search for them myself and can be surprised when I explore a dungeon and find them rather than having their locations told to me before I've even played the game.

Hopefully, though, Bethesda will know better than to spoil any big plot twists before releasing the game.

I haven't read anything about New Vegas, and never will. I will never read anything about TESV.

Before I got Oblivion I read so much about it that the game wasn't much of a surprise. I'll never do that again.

I would read some reviews, which I can’t help. I also would consider the source too. But for the most part I would purposely make myself expect the worst, that way no matter what, I will not be disappointed.

I don't want any of that, because I wouldn't be able to resist looking at it. When I first got Oblivion, I had just played it at my friends house. I thought it was amazing. I ordered it off Amazon, but in the week it took to arrive, I basically discovered everything about the game off of UESP. I really regret that now, and I'm getting Morrowind, but I already know the main quest, and that will probably be ruined for me now.

I did this on accident with Halo: Reach, being far too busy to pay attention to the hype, so I had no clue what new features were being added. I did, however, have extensive knowledge of the Halo series' lore, so when the game was released, I was more suprised than ever before. From now on, I'm going to stay away from the hype machine as much as I can untill this is released, and then wait for a review before purchasing it.

Basically, all I want to know are the following:

1) The title

2) What province/year is it taking place

3) The plot

4) The Release

Once I know, I'll return to Oblivion and play as a new character.

I don't wanna be given too much. I loved the feeling of not knowing anything and finding out crap I got from Morrowind, and I totally lost it in Oblivion and Fallout 3 because I knew the jist of the game. And, I mean, there's no chance of me restraining myself with a game such as TESV.

I dont want to see any tutorials, missions in thier entirety or begining game sequences. I just want to see snippets of random gameplay. I want to experience the begining of the game for my self.

That's a good question. I get super-excited for game announcements, and like to follow the development to get myself more and more excited, but recently I've mostly been leaving off, possibly because developers are becoming more tight-lipped, learning the lessons of Fable. So I'll probably still look, but there's a chance I might decide not to.

A little something the thread subtitle reminded me of, "you want spoilers or not?"

Well one thing, I don't want Beth themselves to spoil the story again.
In some of the very first releases the straight out blurted out "The emperor has a secret heir and you have to find him"... uhm, HELLO, that could have been a nice SURPRISE, why reveal that in demo material? Sure it was revealed pretty early in the game but they could have had a lot of room to play around. Like initially keeping it secret that the Emperor is dead to the general public only having a few rumors going around.

But anyway, DON'T blurt out such things pre release or even in demo material. If they hadn't said it outright in the BEGINNING of the E3 demo you wouldn't even know because you never see martin or the guy you're supposed to deliver the amulet to. So for the majority of players who DON'T dive into the main quest head on that revelation would have come FAR later.

Oh and in case you'd say "you wouldn't know if you never saw the E3 demo", it's also written ON THE BACK OF THE GAME BOX!

I'm not really sure. I'm sure at first I'll try to stay away from it, then I'll find something on accident which will lead me to curiosity, which would, of course, lead me to finding out more :)

Now that you say it, it would have been a lot better if with the Emperor's dying breathe, he says "find Jaufree", or something, and then you have to find him, and he says "I want you to go to Kvatch, find a priest named Martin, bring him back here... He must not die!" lol. The player being completely clueless, until you get to Cloud Ruler temple... Then it's a big  moment.
