When to use VATS

Post » Fri Feb 05, 2010 5:18 am

How often do you guys use VATS? When is it okay to use it, and when does it make fighting too easy?

Never.
I use it to pause the time when attacking Hidden Valley but I never fire with it or use it as a scanning device.

I like to watch peoples heads explode...also I like watching my bullet travel all the way across the map to kill an enemy(though that isn't VATS dependent)

Since I mostly play as a sniper VATS really doesn't work for me. I can snipe much farther on my own and I'm not too bad of a shot either.

I'll use it in certain tight spots but generally I don't need it often.

When I first played F3 I used it constantly because if was so much fun....now that I'm used to it, I only use it if I know I'm facing certain death....but I've been gravitating towards fighting enemies without it on my 4th playthrough. :obliviongate:

I more just use it for aiming now, dont get me wrong if im fighting someone and I can take them down in vats then I will, but in the bigger firefights I usually dont use it that much.

I use VATS more often in Fallout 3 then I did in New Vegas. I would only use VATS in New Vegas if somebody is at close range or I'm fighting a Deathclaw and I need my weapon to get a guaranteed Head Shot at close range so that I don't die. Iron Sights Mode is superior to VATS.

I use it a often as possible because it is just so damn cool. Now most of the time in the wastes I open combat with long range attacks outside of vats range. In mid range to cqc I use it as long as I have action points. Vats is much more entertaining than just spraying bullets or hip firing.

Only in short ranged combat against fleeting targets, that are aware of me.

Since I'm playing "Fallout: Sniper" I don't use VATS all that much.

Never.
Did use it when I 1st started the game to see how it worked. Couldn't stand it. In the short time I tried it tho, I became used to hitting the vats key as a 'panic' button and it took me a while to get out of that habit. After that...except for a couple times when I wanted screenshots, haven't touched it at all, period, since.

For me it's partially about vats being too much like a win button (not always, but often), but even more, it's completely immersion-breaking.

Like Crimson, used it like in FO3, didn't work well, ditch it all together.

With the addition of iron sights I don't use vats nearly as much as I did in 3. I like to pull it out for shooting dynamite/grenades out of enemies hands or using explosives myself.

I'll use it more on my current playthrough since I took the kamikaze trait but most of the time I just like to pull out the iron sights and go to work that way. Plus vats likes to do little things like missing four 95% hits in a row on a nightstalker running away from me. Moments like that make you almost want to never use it again.

In NV, rarely, since the accuracy is garbage compared to real-time shooting. It's relegated to the role of close-range panic button mostly.

I said Often. I try to do without it more and more but with my latest Unarmed character using Pushy and the way companions jump in front of you, I found that I kept giving Boone concussions. I'm using Vats more right now. :) I also use EW a lot and Vats helps there too.

And you know how you got that screenshot of Boone giving himself a Stimpak? I finally saw it too. He stuck himself in the hip with it after groaning in pain. I wish I'd gotten it on video. Good to see you.

Only if a deathclaw is dancing on my chin but other than that it's a waste of ammo the percentages are bit unfair at any distance.

The sound effect in VATS when firing is fantastic, of course providing you have good sound system. However I use manual aiming 99% of the time.

Me too, I still have trouble trying to stay away from the life alert button.

"AAAAH, Cazadores!? Where did they come from?!" - Whenever I see a cazadore.

I don't blame anyone for using VATS on these little bastards, you need something to bring them down a notch.

Sometimes, I mostly use the iron sights since most the guns I use my hands don't shake at all and when using hand-to-hand/melee combat just stay out of V.A.T.S. unless I want to preform a Cross or Uppercut three times in the row. Never use it for sniping unless I got a character who can't snipe worth [censor] because that's what Steady comes in handy. Only use V.A.T.S. to scan invisible enemies (like Nightkins), final blow kills, and like I said about the hand-to-hand/melee combat. Try not to over use it when playing. Like Fallout 3 for me, the game will freeze easily if using it too much.

VATS is cheating. It is a built in cheat but really. I hit "v" once a game to get the "press v to enter VATS" to go away.

Its an RPG, not an FPS. By using VATS you are using your character's skill. The skill you built up. Kind of like a turn based RPG except you can be attacked while doing the attacking. I see there's a bunch of liars that voted in this pole. "Sometimes" my ass.

come on D: vats is always my first move,
as soon as a threat is in my visuals they already got 2 to the head, and 3 to the chest
besides ;) if i'm lucky Lady Misfortune might make an apperance

Except for the random time it takes to complete an attack. Sometimes I can empty a clip without getting hit once, other times I would be taking a clip or two just to enter and exit VATS, with the same weapon against the same type of enemy..

I voted sometimes. Because a rookie/noobie at the game will probably want to use it much more often then say a very experienced/expert at the game. So VATS is more recommended for rookies then vets. Though either way it isn't a bad idea to use it in close to possibly mid quarters.
