When will we have a game that features all of Tamirel?

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 4:34 am

Discuss!

Skyrim is one of the smallest areas we got to jump around in yet. I know it's much to ask but as developers get better at making games, how cool would it not be to get a game with parts of or WHOLE Tamirel?

Just think.. Running from one side of Skyrim to the other takes an hour of ingame time (and sure a lot of stuff is thrown there)

The next console generation. I'm not sure that the current consoles could handle a detailed gameworld of that size.

Never.

It would take too long to make a good game with a world that size, I'd rather they spent their time making small but very detailed areas than large bland ones.

I would love that. Hard to imagine how long it would take to develope that, though.

All of Tamriel done at the scale we are seeing Skyrim now would mean a gameworld like 15 or 20 times larger. Wont happen on a for-profit project sadly.

But if I'm ever a billionaire in this life, I will fund it at a loss just to see it in all its glory :D Development time would be like a decade and a staff of 500-600 though!

No point. Better off keeping it near the same size and adding more detail.

It would take many many years and many more developers to even have the time to detail that big of a game world.

not the whole world, thats only a 5th of it  (you had continentes on all sides of tamriel, one was sunk but the area it held still counts since its on nirn, and the northern continent was abandond by the nords, the southern was home to mer of some kind but they left, akavir still has it's inhabitants though!)

and that will come after we have had a game set in every area and a game with every nation on every continent (all tamriel for TES 10 all akavir for TES 14 and possibly the entirety of nirn on TES 15, TES 16 will have every deadric realm and mundas)

P.S. we have already had one with all of nirn

Well, there's The Elder Scrolls I: Arena which features all 9 provinces of Tamriel, and full travel amongst each... It's available as a free download from gamesas, so if you've not tried it, go give it a shot. :)

WOULD'VE been perfect except that it's actually been 17.

As mentioned, Arena featured the whole of Tamriel.

However I'd much rather have a smaller area with great attention to detail, variety and hand placed NPCs, towns, objects, dungeons, etc then a massive area which sacrifices detail, scale, or has randomly generated locations (which are mainly cookie cutter).

why would we need to??

I can see a future game spread across two regions such as the rain forests of Valenwood turning into the jungle lands and sandy deserts of Elsweyr with perhaps a war taking place between the Bosmer and the Khajiit.

The problem with a game that size isn't disk space or technological restrictions, it's the manpower. There were 100 people working 4 years on Skyrim - imagine how many people and and how much time it would take to make all of Tamriel to that standard. The only solution would be to bring back procedural generation and make everything generic and reusable, which I don't think any of us want.

Indeed, that's actually quite plausible there; Daggerfall spanned half of two different provinces, for instance. (High Rock and Hammerfell) With Bloodmoon, Morrowind wound up covering Skyrim as well as Morrowind. Given that, area-wise, Elseweyr and Valenwood ARE the smallest of the provinces, and very connected, it could make sense to make a game that spans both. Plus, that'd take care of 2 of the 3 most-neglected provinces. (those and Summerset Isle have so far featured in only Arena, while all others have shown in at LEAST one other game)

Elsweyr/Valenwood Would be great actually, but still combined it would be very small, smaller than Skyrim. My only complaint about Skyrim is how much smaller it seems than Cyrodil (and geographically it is MUCH smaller.) I would love if a mod team would combine the two provinces, combining Cyrodil and Skyrim, which at the moment are my two favorite provinces. It shouldn't be that hard, I think. Tamriel Rebuilt needs to get a much larger team going and continue building tamriel, borrowing Cyrodil and Skyrim's heightmap would already have a good portion finished.

We don't need all of Tamriel again, but I do really want a game that takes place in 2 provinces. Because look at the map, every province we haven't been to in recent years in the same size as Skyrim or smaller. Mix some of Morrowind's mainland with all of Black Marsh and that'll make a good decent size though. Or have Hammerfell, with the ability to sail to Summerset Isle. After all provinces are visited, we can go to Atmora or Akavir :D I think we might even be going to Atmora in the Skyrim expansion! :D!

I wouldn't worry so much about the actual size of the provinces on the map of Tamriel as the in-game maps are not created proportionally from game to game. For example, Daggerfall has by far the largest game world in any TES (I seem to remember reading that it is actually the largest game world in ANY game ever) and, as someone pointed out, it covers only the northern border of Hammerfell and a bit more than half of High Rock.
So Elsewyr and Valenwood combined could easily be adjusted to the size that the developers see fit.
