When will PC version be stable?

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 5:55 pm

The number of crashes to desktop has increased significantly over the last few patches.

I am now stuck with a companion quest where I follow Aela to Morvarth's Lair and the game crashes the second I zone into the cave. I can't dismiss her and/or cancel the quest so I can ignore it and go about my game with my normal companion. This is now the 3rd character I've run into a dead in on. I'm pretty much losing interest fast since the game is so linear at the beginning. I can't stomach rolling another toon with no guarantee that I will run into the same problems. I shouldn't have to save and quick save every 5 minutes.

Being a customer of this series since the first title I'm not very impressed with this one. But you have my money already so I doubt your concerned.

Same here. I still get a few crashes, but those are probably my mods.

Reasonably stable by next month I'd say. Playable as a fairly full experience (modded) by June or July, fully realized in 2-3 years.

Never.
Sometime after the CK is out.

This all makes me want to wonder about how amazing this game would've been had it been optimized for PC.
Instead we get puke quality textures and bad performance to top it.
Thank god for mods.

I've had two game freezes in over 92 hours of play. What are these crashes folks keep talking about? Are they playing with only 2 megs of RAM on their system or have loads of applications svcking up memory or something?

Thank god for mods? Mods make your game crash more rather than less

No they don't.

Also, the mods makes the game look more like it's supposed to for PC.

It has been stable since release....my only crashes were related to pushing my overclock too far. (3 crashes in 50+ hours of playtime) - I also have ZERO mods. (game looks super sharp, runs smooth as silk, every setting at ULTRA+ with ini tweaks - 16AF, 4xAA)

..turned down OC - no more crashes :) - note: Skyrim was the only program on my system sensitive enough to have an issue with the OC.

My guess is that you have a hardware or software issue that is causing the crashes.

I have shelved the game and probably going to wait for 6 to 12 months before playing again.

By then, the game should be relatively stable playable with all the patches and all DLCs should have been released.
Also, many mods should be relatively sophisticated by then and then I can enjoy the game fully.

Playing Oblivion right now is a good idea with all those mods out there. Actually IMO the experience of a modded Oblivion is much better than that of Skyrim ATM.

Everyone runs different video cards and hardware.

Then they wonder why some people get crashes and others don't. *shrugs*

Interesting. Mine hasn't crashed once...then again, I've only been playing for 20 hours or so.

Has anyone who's seeing a lot of crashes tried turning off the community functions in Steam? New Vegas used to crash like crazy for me until I turned that stuff off, and then it stopped almost completely.

Actually they do. Bethesda does not design the mods and therefore does not have any jurisdiction over them. Therefore crashes can and will be caused by the mods since Bethesda, obviously, didn't know what the mods would be.

Untrue. I used tons of mods with Morrowind and Oblivion. You will find out the truth when you load up 20 plus mods.

Get the mod that enables 4GB of memory for skyrim, it solves most CTDs.

Really, as far as ambitious games go, aren't the bugs at release day + 1 month pretty 'normal'? Total War series...Civ 5...IL2 Cliffs of dover...I think of the pc games I've bought in the last 3 or 4 years, and they are titles have, in their own ways, cut new ground. About the only (relatively) bug-free title I've bought during that time may be Witcher 2. I broke my own rule by buying this game on day of release, rather than waiting 3 or 4 months. This is frustrating for sure, but I don't see anything outside of the norm when it comes to glitches and problems. Hell, compared to some, even the release of modding tools by Bethesda makes some other gaming communities drool.

I remember DragonAge 2 being pretty crash-free out the box...I also remember asking for my money back cause it was a big stinking turd of a game.

My game is stable since day one. Some people experience problems, some don't. The only way to know is trying by yourself.

I use 30+ mods thank you. I've had no crashes in 40+ hours now. The 4GB thing fixed all CTD for me.

if you are stupid enough to install two mods changing the same thing yes you will get corrupt files. If mods are compatible with each other they can run more stable then vanilla game especially if the entire mod is focused on fixing bugs IE unofficial patches.

It really depends on the mods you're using. Some definitely make the game unstable while some don't. As someone else said, I find the 4GB launcher (although not really a "mod," per se) actually makes the game more stable for most people having problems.

200+ hours and not a single crash... it's your system.

Obviously, since not everyone is having problems. However, is it something on the system that shouldn't be there (your problem) or is it a compatibility issue (possibly Bethesda's problem)? The fact that some people are having crashes and some aren't doesn't indicate where the blame lies.

Stability with this game is hit-or-miss. Some people crash every 15 seconds, and others don't ever have any crashing problems. I'm in the latter category, because for all the 100 hours I've been playing so far, I've only crashed once.

Only mods in use are replacers. I'm not delving into plugin mods until the creation Kit goes live because A: I don't trust mods that were not made on tools for this specific game, no matter how you slice it, and B: I want to experience Skyrim vanilla before I go into mods. Textures I do on the fly, graphics are frugal like that, but gameplay... no thank you. Not until January.

I imagine the CTD bugs are caused by certain drivers or hardware setups.

I get maybe 1 CTD about every 8-20 IRL hours of game play, and it has always been in zone transitions. I've always been able to start Skyrim back up, and continue, and be inside the zone I CTD on.

My system wasn't top of the line 3 years ago when I bought it either...
