Where and when should Fallout 4 take place?

Post » Sat Jun 05, 2010 7:08 am

It seems obvious that they are setting the story up for Fallout 4 to take place in the "Commonwealth" of Mass. The same way that Morrowind Had plenty of clues about a sequel taking part in the Oblivion Dimension. The only places really mentioned in the game are "Back West" in CA, China, the Capitol Wasteland, and the Commonwealth. My guess is they do a Boston based Fallout, with the "Institute" being based out of the MIT Campus, so it would have to include Cambridge as well. Just think of some of the cool locations! Bunker Hill Monument, Harvard Yard, Fenway Park and Landsdowne St, Downtown Crossing... The cool thing about this city for a location is that, unlike DC, it's small enough to be completely rendered into a game, so you will get the whole feel of it. The T will be great for firefights as well.

As was pointed out earlier, though, you can only get away with so many cities only being partially destroyed. What kind of nuclear war would leave Boston and DC more or less intact?

Besides, who's to say the "Commonwealth" won't appear in the downloadable content? Bethesda's previous history on DLC and expansions suggests they won't have a problem adding locations outside the core area.

The kind in video games hehe. :P Gots to have some sort of creative liberties to add some fresh gameplay elements. I think FO3 did this quite well.

Since it's all too obvious that FO3 was made just to aquaint newcomers to the Fallout Universe that had never played the first 2, or 3 if you count Tactics, I'm not even going to mention...the other. Anyway, since FO3 was just an intro into the wonderful world of post apocalyptic death and mayhem and serves no purpose of continuing the storyline of the first two before it, I say revive Van Buren in Fallout 2.5: The Van Buren Project, or something like that.
It's worth a thought or two BETHESDA!! They already had a large chunk of the story finished and you just canned it like so much trash.....
Don't get me wrong, the game looks amazing with all the detail they crammed into the outstandingly vivid cesspool that is the wastes, but it was a little too familiar. I was hoping for a slightly newer experience aside from the beautiful 3D rendering. It's worth a thought right?

In my opinion a setting right after the war could not work or you will have to spend the entire game in a fallout shelter or a vault because the outside would be too radiated to move very far, considering in FO3 there are still pockets of radiation even after 200 years, check out this link http://www.kiddofspeed.com/chapter1.html, it is about a ghost town in chernobyl area, many places are still too deadly to stay long, especially in buildings where the radiation would stick around so to speak. You can click on the different chapters to see the pics, some of those remind me of the Fallout world.

I would like to see Europe or London but really any city or wasteland will do for me :coolvaultboy:

I've got three hopefuls.

NYC - Setting the game in manhatten would allow for a small world area but also allow for tons of locales and landmarks to visit. Instead of settlements being town-like, they could be confined to single buildings (kind of like Tenpenny Tower, but less snobbyish and ritzy). Alternitivley I can see settlements in post-apoc NYC being built on top of the skyscraqers, kind of like what Van Buren was going to do with Detroit.

The Commonwealth - Bethesda has my interest piqued, and I'm guessing a game set in this area is the most likely for a Fallout 4 (or at least the Fallout 3 expansion). Instead of the main character growing up in a Vault, s/he'd probably come from within the Institute.

Las Vegas - It'd be like New Reno, but bigger.

I have to agree, I would most certainly like a game set in boston/cambridge, It is one of the most iconic city's in america, and it seems to be even more interesting that they have developed technology greater than the brotherhood, and possibly the Enclave. The only other would be philliy, (founding father's and all that =P.

Given the very small, detailed nature of Bethesda's games, we can assume the next Fallout will also take place in a limited geographical area. One of the reasons Fallout 3 works is because of the iconic nature of many locations in and around DC. The question is whether there is another location that could provide the same sense of amazement. Perhaps NYC, but even that city has fewer iconic locations.

I also wonder about when the story should take place. Each of the RPG's has taken place after the previous, but the downside is that the world has to slowly improve over time and then you lose the fun of the setting. So maybe the next game should happen closer to the time of when the nukes fell.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

For some reason I think it would be cool for it to take place in Washington (State), Or the Seattle area.

Maybe it's because I live there though...

Well, i think it cool if the next Fallout took place in Canada.

People would be able to see the radiated wreckage of Ottawa maybe? I can imagine seeing the Parliament building or the RC Mint.

It might not be hard to implement the americana that Fallout is known for seeing as Canada was annexed by the U.S.

Just an idea.

Maybe Chicago or NY? Or maybe Atlanta? I agree that nothing could really match the power of the post-apocalyptic ruins of DC with all of its monuments and significance to the country.

As for a timeline, I would personally love to see a scenario where the player is born, is toddler, child, etc. before the bombs fall. You could see how the world is and get a feel for it, maybe even see part of it, before the nuclear holocaust. Maybe your family has Vault-Tec vault reservations, but something goes wrong, and you and your father are separated from your mother and a sibling. You manage to take shelter in a home bunker or conventional fallout shelter, but your father dies. Maybe you get raised by a Mr. Handy. Fast forward 10 or so years, and we get to experience the Fallout world in the beginnings of its post-apocalyptic stages, with a decade being enough time for small settlements or groups to form.

Main quest could be trying to locate your mother and sibling to see if they survived. You don't know if they made it to the Vault or not. You were too young to remember the Vault the family had reservations for. First stop - nuked home. Maybe you find out certain neighbours looted supplies, papers - you start tracking them down, etc.

Anyway, that's what I think would be cool. Still unsure of a location though.

No, the land would be too radiated to survive. As far as i know, everyone in the wastes is decended from people who got into vaults, or were extremely lucky when the bombs fell and had their own shelter

For some reason I think it would be cool for it to take place in Washington (State), Or the Seattle area.

Maybe it's because I live there though...

Yea, set it in the PNW!
I'd love to see the Space Needle standing around a bunch of crumpled buildings

What I am thinking about is this: The motto of all Fallout games is "War... war never changes". So now 200 years after the bombs, there are some emerging centers and institutions of power, who would love to bring civilization back to the land. To list a few - The New California Republic, Brotherhood of steel, the Reno Families, The Commonwealth and the Institute, the Enclave or what is left of it. And we have to include the ones that the writers would come up with. All of them have the same idea, but different ways, in many cases diametrically opposed, of archiving these goals.

As these centers of power take control of more and more territory, eventually we will have....... war, and war never changes. Here is your line to follow

England would be so awesome, I'd love for Bethesda to take it away from America and show us what happened to the rest of the world, Europe mainly. I'd like to see it set in Nottingham (sadly, it probably won't happen) because...Well I live there but you know. Another twist could be, instead of a wasteland in terms of desert and such...Nuclear winter anyone?

Fallout 1's general area would be great. Something that bugged me to no ends is how small your area of exploration was in Fallout 3 (In terms of miles you cover)
I Wanna visit Junk town btw, I was bummed that I only knew it got absorbed my NCR at some point before Fallout 2.

Btw I really wish people would stop saying China won who the hell thinks them getting more nuked then us and not having the vaults (Though a social test still saved lives ect) The President in Fallout 2 said we sent the reds back to the stone age didn't he?

I'd like to see New York, maybe London, mutated zoo animals ftw? As for time setting, could try anytime really after the war as we havn't touched that area yet, but maybe at the same time as Falllout 3 would be nice, also think of the possiblities for bases, empire state building, big ben, buckingham palace and all that jazz (the club, not the figure of speech) :hehe:.

I'd like to see London. However, it would need some links with the factions in the previous fallouts, so I can't see how that would work as I can't really see how the BOS or even enclave would be capable of crossing the Atlantic in any great numbers. Maybe further North would be good - Canadian border perhaps. Where there are no landmarks already Bethesda could make their own.
