Where and when should Fallout 4 take place?

Post » Sat Jun 05, 2010 3:41 pm

I like to been in some place where post-apocalyptic story haven't been told like New England (Vermont, Maine, Rhone Island), Hawaii, Quebec (Canada), Iceland, Maryland (western, eastern, southern, central, Kent island, Baltimore, and/or Annapolis). Maybe around same time as 1-3.

No brainer really....fallout 4 should be in florida. Why you ask...hmm big NASA base in florida which would be real cool. Also imagine the mutated snakes, alligators, swamps, insects, etc.

I addition to all that, It could be like morrowind with shipwrecks along the coast that could be explored, and then they could end it with the vault wanderer taking off in a hidden spacecraft to live with a secret colony on the moon. (Much better ending than fallout 3 IMO)

Interesting...so the idea has surfaced before. In all seriousness me & my friend were talking about it, and I think Florida is the ideal place for Fallout 4. Ocean beaches with mutated sharks & squid patrolling the waters, mutated panthers patrolling land. I would continue with some Cthulu references, and perhaps make a town where people are half-fish or whatnot, like that story about Innsmouth (i THink?). Shipwrecks, underwater vaults/cities, usable boats, islands.....there is a lot of possibilities.

If anyone at Bethesda is reading this, you could make the map a long rectangle instead of a square, and make the character traverse the everglades & then the coast-line. In the everglades show a small amount of vegetation making a comeback, and have a lot of strange mutated wildlife (not all hostile) like in morrowind. And I cannot state enough how cool my idea is for the ending, with you launching a spacecraft out of a hidden NASA bunker to live on a moon base.

It does blow about the loss of the '50s feel if it's in some other country, but I am GREATLY interested in a spin-off/expansion that focuses on China.

It doesn't have to lose the 50s feel. It would simply be based on 1950s socialist realism and maoist propaganda.

If it's moved to a differenct country it should have a different name and be a spin off that takes place in the FO universe but not a fallout titled game.

I"d vote Houston, San Antonio, or Corpus Christi maybe.... but then again I'm a Texan!

Haha! Yeah right! There are hardly any iconic locations. Houston = ruined mini malls spread out over vast distances.
San Antonio = dried up river walk and the Alamo
Corpus Christi = the statue of Selina and her big ole but.

It might be kind of interesting but the game would definately need a vehicle.. kind of like the real thing huh?
A truly patriotic notion but the boredom of driving gets to me enough round these parts without putting it in a game. :)

I was thinking the same thing minus NASA and the shipwrecks. An interesting touch.
I also thought Florida would be a nice scene given the retro feel of Miami even today. Imagine the beautiful mutant babes laying out on the radioactive beaches. There are some nearby nvde beaches too where these ladies shed a little more than just their skin, if you get my drift. If women who loose their limbs aren't your thing, then perhaps Orlando might suit your fancy? Post-Apocalypic "Doogey World" is a wonderland of brain-blasting and limb-tearing extravagance.

China has to be done eventually, especially considering their vast history; you can't simply wipe them away.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Amazon, Europe, Africa, or just generally any time or place.

Well, i think it cool if the next Fallout took place in Canada.

People would be able to see the radiated wreckage of Ottawa maybe? I can imagine seeing the Parliament building or the RC Mint.

It might not be hard to implement the americana that Fallout is known for seeing as Canada was annexed by the U.S.

Just an idea.

I agree with this. My idea - although it is probably extremely biased because I live in and love the Pacific Northwest - is that it takes place in the Pacific Northwest, partly in America, partly in Canada. Ideally it would go all the way down to Portland, Salem, or even Eugene, and all the way up past Vancouver BC. But knowing gamesas, they would want to make it more compact, so I wouldn't expect more than as South as Seattle or maybe Tacoma, and as north as Vancouver.

The reason I like this idea, is because it could possibly show some of the differences between the Canadian and American attitudes, and how the Canadians did not even participate in the war (To my knowledge) but still suffered terrible nuclear fallout, and still got annexed by America.

It would be interesting to be able to compare and contrast the people and locations. Also, I just think it would be cool to have a bunch of poisoned woods, rather than deserts (the first two) and barren fields (The third).

Edit: My idea could work for Detroit/Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa/Upstate New York.

Canada would definately be interesting.

However, I do not think that locales outside of North America would be a good idea. If you really needed to take Fallout outside of America then I'd say maybe the Land Down Under, but that is only because of the Mad Max movies. Fallout has to stay consistent with B rated post-nuclear movies during the 60's through the 80's. Already Bethesda broke tradition a little by not including any B rated movie enduendos. Take it outside of the places those movies were ever shot then you just have another Hellgate: London or Bioshock.

I'd like to see FO4 take place somewhere in the Future WHEN THE PS3 UPDATES/DLC ISSUE HAS BEEN ADDRESSED!

On topic though, stick with the areas Interplay made, dont go trying to make something new. I'd like to see whats become of NCR, New Reno and Vault City. Consequently VC would be a great place to start out. Just think, vault suits without numbers on the back!! Well technically it was V8 but w/e.

I think Las Vegas and Area 51 would be a good place for the next one.

However I do like the idea of branching out from DC and building upon what's there in FO3. So that you spread out helping to bring civilisation back to North America by having add-ons for various cities and states. Although the levelling systems would have to be changed to take into account reaching level 1,000,000.

A Fallout game set in a different country might attract a good chunk of the current players, but how many random new customers will buy it? I don't think as many as if it were set in the US. Post-Apocalyptic Boston or Seattle or New York is more engaging to me than post-apocalyptic Beijing or Taiwan or Moscow. I know the US places and names. I see them during baseball games and on the news. I'm interested in what might have happened to them. As a huge fan of the Total War games, I've always enjoyed playing the European and Levant nations... but I know several people who resist playing them since they don't feature America.

Maybe Bethesda will do a "taste test" DLC for FO3 though... Some how transport the Lone Wandere to Beijing or Japan or Europe. They could resurrect the Van Buren idea of an orbiting nuke platform that the LW has to destroy in DLC #4, only to have the LW's escape pod come down in China some place... just in time for DLC #5, or a full on expansion pack to wrap things up before we all get ready for TES5. :P

Yeah, I agree with this, and that's why I think Seattle would be a great idea because "On the Beach" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Beach_(novel)) had a big chunk of it set in Seattle after Nuclear fallout.

bethesda should really piss off the NMA crowd, set it back out west, ten years after fallout 2.

merge up all of the locations of the first two games and go nuts with them all in beautiful 3D glory.

i'm just wary of more "great east coast cities" fallout games. i mean, in a nuclear scenario, the east coast is pretty much the most dense set of targets outside of western europe.

the true-to-science! vs. artistic license (well used, and for excellent effect, i must say) of having so much of downtown D.C. still standing in fallout 3 might have been riding a razor's edge already.

bring it back to cali.

we'll get to see more towns, deal with more factions, get involved in politics... all with the added bonus of being able to check back in with all our old friends from the first two.

Dude, Fallout was never about true-to-science.

As a Brit, I'd love to see Fallout 4 set in England, considering the fact that culture was landlocked in the 50's, I'd really love to see some wastelanders taking tea at the edge of a radioactive crater.

I mean, think about it - we don't have any troubles about our national landmarks getting blown up (I think V for Vendetta cleared that one up nicely), and post-bomb London would be one hell of a sight to see. Imagine scouting through the ruins of Buckingham palace, or climbing the Black Tower, now infested with Ghouls.

God, I want that so HARD.

Bombable: Check
English language: Check
l33t Factor: Check!
We have a candidate!

I suggest these areas:
Manhattan (island, no problem with map edges)
China (The other side...)
England ( & Tea orgy!)

I agree with other posters that the key to the Fallout franchise is the uniquely American 50's view of nuclear hope/fear. I don't know how well that would translate in other countries.

FO3 features a heavily urban setting. I'd like to see a more rural setting, with challenging natural landscape littered with heavily armed and xenophobic settlements, with large factions fighting it out. Somewhere south, with swamps, heavy woods, and lots of mutated beasts roaming around. Choose your faction... or protect the little guy: The new dark ages have come.

Much of it was pretty much worldwide. And a lot can be based on the 1950s popular culture of that particular country.

I don't think that's true. Seems to me that elsewhere, especially in Europe, there was more of a feeling of abject doom than the (incorrect) feeling that nuclear power would lead us to the promised land. Heck, by 1955, Europe was only 10 years past the war, and there was still cleaning up to do.

This. Europe was an absolute mess during the 50s, and nothing like the U.S. A lot of England, especially London was very destroyed. France, Belgium, and The Netherlands were suffering from being ravaged by Nazi Germany. Germany was obviously split into two parts. The whole thing was a mess.

While in America, WW2 actually helped us. It got us out of the Great Depression due to the high amount of supply during the Depression, and the war increased demand for war supplies. Our economy was in excellent shape. We felt on top of the world, and that is when the U.S. became the global super power it is today(not for long, I am willing to wager).

That is what the Fallout series criticizes, and what they criticize is inherent to the United States.

Sure, but if the setting moved to a different place, it could be based on that place's 1950s mentality, which would be equally interesting to explore.
