Where are all my Shield and Sword Warriors at?

Post » Fri Nov 05, 2010 2:15 am

So many people on these forums are either making a Mage, a dual wielding warrior, or some sneaky archer/dagger ninja person. Where the hell are all my traditional shield and sword warriors at? It seems like with all the new combat styles, people are forgetting the true warrior class that's in every RPG. We get shield perks! Elemental protection! We'd be pros at killing dragons and the toughest dude around to kill ;)

Anyways, this is just a shout out to all my true warrior fans out there. Nord warrior with shield and sword will be my first class :) Also, feel free to discuss shield and sword warriors here and how they'll be implemented, combat, possible shield perks, what do you love about 'em, etc. This is a shield and sword warrior thread only, so post your ideas, thoughts, and concerns on them!

I think My Nord will switch between a sword and shield and a large 2 handed axe.

Just so long as I can feel a blow through my shield... When I take a massive attack from some huge monster, even if I block it I don't want it to just be like "oh, did a flea land on my shield just now?" I want to know I just came a few inches from being annihilated, obviously skills and perks and what have you might help reduce this but still I want WEIGHT to the impacts. Also I've heard you can do a Shield bash of sorts to knock opponents off balance which should be awesome. I'm also going to go Sword and Board my first build, Nord of course.

Shield bash is gonna own! And I agree with you man, I want to feel the pressure of those attacks on my shield, especially if I'm gettin attacked by a dragon.

Well, I've always preferred a stealth character in any game.

That being said my second character in Skyrim is going to be a sword and board Orc :)

I don't really think you can define a Warrior simply by using a sword and shield. I also don't see how that's "traditional"; it's just a preference.
Why wouldn't we be excited for new gameplay mechanics that let us RP further? Not every Warrior uses a shield.
That being said, I do plan on carrying a shield with me. My first character will be a Nord Warrior, but a two-handed axe user. I always keep a trusted shield with me though, and a good longsword, for when I need to be on the defensive side of combat if things get sticky.

I believe he means in the traditional D&D way. Fighters (Warriors) are more Sword and Shield and Barbarians were more inclined towards Two Handed weapons. It's your typical tank in a party. So in a sense Sword and Shield is the "traditional" warrior path.

Little off-topic but out of curiosity...

It's given that you can block with a shield and I've heard you can block (albeit not as easily) with a two-hander but I haven't heard anything about blocking with a one handed weapon... Can you?
I've heard you cant with a spell equipped but what about with no spell equipped just a one handed sword? It seems like that would... I dunno... not be cool.

I'm gonna make a classical two-handed, large weapon Nord for my first character.

We don't "know" but I would think it doesn't need to be "announced." If you are not using anything in your off-hand that button is used for blocking. :)

Well, I guess I'll just switch between the styles. That's how I always did it anyways, just this time equipment will be more important.

Tough enemy? Sword+Shield
Normal enemy(ies)? Sword+Sword (or Sword+Axe)
Daedra?: Sword+Spell
Necromancers/Evil mages?: Spell+Spell

That's pretty much how I'll play it, but of course this might vary according to how I feel

Last time around I was a sword and shield warrior mage. Does that count? Unfortunately, though, I won't be able to do that this time around.

Yes you will. You'll just have to be much more tactile about it. As in you will have to drop your shield or sword for a moment to cast a spell.

I always do sword and shield combo. Ever since Morrowind released, that or a mage. So Iam brushing up on lore and gameplay by making a sneaky bowman in Oblivion and Iam liking it so far. Especially the spot them from days away, zoom in and try to one hit them with an enchanted/poisoned bow and enchanted arrow 6x thing. Its sick I feel like a real hunter so I might be doing that in Skyrim. I dont know though because I asked my sisters BF who will be buying it on release as well and he usually does the bow guy I do the sword and my sister the sneak and he wants to do a mage and my sister wants to do a warrior this time so its up in the air. Come to think of it I dont use Blunt its the only weapon I dont have mastered so I might get more blunt weapon experience come Skyrim, seems fitting with the whole Viking scheme. And Iam a big, tall, long haired german guy to so making an axe wielding Nord sounds like it would suit me well.

So it will require more touch or feeling?

Although I expect my first character will use either magic or stealth, I have no doubt I'll make the archetypical shield and sword warrior at some point, but I can see why a lot of people would choose dual wielding over that, because let's face it, we've been able to use shields and swords for as long as the Elder Scrolls have been around, and in most other series. But dual wielding is something new to Skyrim, so of course people are doing to want to try it. But in past Elder Scrolls games, I'd usually make more than one character and try a different archetype with each, and there's no reason to think I won't do so in Skyrim as well.

Sword and shield all the way. That's what I'm doing with my first character for Skyrim. Give me a sword, shield, and a restoration spell, and I'm good to go.

I'm probably going to start out with a standard sword 'n shield, but I may use and 1 handed axe or mace instead, just to shake things up. If the Orcs don't look completely ridiculous, I may even try a dual mace or axe build. Ooh! I'm going to do a sword and axe like Skarin from Viking: Battle for Asgard...OOH!! I have a name now!!

Sword and shield Redguard warrior here! No spells, no archery, just pure melee combat all the way!

I really can't wait to see a legitimate demo of the game at E3. From the gameplay trailer we have, the video cuts were so quick, and the fighting was so fast, that (aside from the powerful feeling of weapons), it was hard to truly scope how combat will look. One thing I can say is animations will be vastly superior, damage will feel like it hurts, and combat overall looked more responsive. I can't wait to see finishing moves in particular for sword and shield warriors.
