Where are all the kids?

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 9:27 am

Well, I dont know--seems like just more invincible NPCs to get in the way, but I like the idea of seeing the children of the races, like other people said. I liked the children of Fallout, even though most of them were annoying.

If I wanted a game with children in it, I would buy one. I play TES games so I can kill, maim, loot, slaughter, explore, conquer, and accomplish quests. This is TES, not Barney and Friends Playtime.I am in my forties, and I like kids, I work with them. I am quite nurturing and patient with my students.TES is a mature themed game, not a DIsney rated E for everyone. I equate my tesgaming escapism with going out to dinner.I don't want to sit next to ill behaved crying children. Nor do I want to play games in which children have the potential to be put in danger. No way.I also agree with Xeritox.

I'm a teacher too. Thank you for your work.

To be honest, if kids were in the game and they could be harmed, I'd actually be more careful and somewhat restrained because I wouldn't want to hurt them. You should see the lengths I went to to make sure Porkchop retired instead of wound up dead at the arena.

Yup. This. If they're in the game and they're invincible, then to me they're just CPU power that was wasted and causes my game to run more slowly.

If it's in, put it in. If it's not - DON'T.

If it's there but we can't have any self-determination with it - regardless of whether that's children or an invincible enemy - then it's not really a role playing game.

Let the players make choices. Anything that restricts that choice is a degradation of the game environment, not an enhancement.

you know what would be cool, if you attack a kid, you die, just to show its wrong (they still take no damage whatsoever of course)

Agreed. It would affect my gameplaying by making me more cautious, inhibited, and concerned about their welfare doing quests involving them.

Is it illegal for a game to show children dieing? (I'm asking...I am not suggesting this at all, just curious as to the laws of game making).

Besthesda's writers are bad enough, but Fallout 3 showed that they should have absolutely no right implementing children in any part of their games. EVER.

u mad bro?

To me I don't quite get the frequent comments of children breaking immersion, even with the "obvious reason." Kids are all over the place in real life; it's strange having a world devoid of them. I can (sort of) understand the comments saying people don't want them (I understand there are people who don't like kids or want to get away from kids in their game world), but to say they break immersion...don't get that one.

That said, I'm thrilled kids are going to be included. I'm an only child, but I'm right in the middle (age-wise) of a large extended family. No matter what, there are always lots of little kids around at family gatherings and what not. To enter a world with no children becomes extremely surreal and immersion breaking for me. Plus, I may be extremely awkward with kids (even more so than with advlts lol), but I like kids and will be glad to see them in game.

If young children are in then I really don't have a problem with it just as long as Bethesday implements their role properly.
Such as kidnapping and rescuing missions
Another set of eyes and ears in a town or city
Fetching items for the PC or NPC
Proving some type of minigame or activity for the PC, like fights (fists or animal), games for the younger crowd, or hide and seek (I know that sounds corny)

children in skyrim will be like cliffracers, and should never have been implemented. why? because at least in morrowind you could kill cliffracers.

In mother russia kids raise you. haha kidding

But I wonder if we'll see child labor as there are going be mines and such. Also large cities means run down poor areas right? So maybe kids stealing? An Oliver Twist reference?

EDIT: Oh and also guys, we've been warned and the mods were nice enough to trust us to keep the discussion within forum rules. So how about we do just that?

Sounds strange, but I miss seeing children running around in the streets like in Fable. I think it would make the world more believable and immersive. They should be immune to all damage and that sort of thing, of course. I in no way endorse corporal punishment and the like. Your thoughts? Should Bethesda include kids in Skyrim?

P.S. I have no idea if this has been brought up before.

Ugh. No, i dont think children should be in games like this. If you're not going to go Fallout 1-2 on them and let them be fought, then they just serve as something that can at any random time notice you, stop you from sneaking, report your crimes, and you cant do anything about it. Keep em out of the game, or stop making them static objects that only serve to inconvenience you in every way imaginable. At the very least make it so they dont respond to violence. In fallout 3 if you attaced one of the urchins everyone would hate you. Thats kinda...I dont like it. It just feels really wrongly implimented.

I agree with some of what you've said. It's kinda what I talked about earlier in the thread about how it has to work gameplay wise the children or else it's not going to work properly. Fallout 3 kinda got it right but I hope they improved on it from what it was in Fallout 3 and I have high hopes on the Radiant AI being the answer to that problem.

I think it would be interesting to see aloof adolescent atlmer, arrogant sharp tongued dunmer toddlers, brash uncouth nord whelps, annoying in your face bosmer children, scrappy orc kids, imperial kids with a big chip on their shoulders, etc. Would to me add to the immersion.

Excellent reply! This is exactly what I had in mind.
