Where are the AK-47s!?

Post » Thu May 27, 2010 9:01 am

The AK-47 was issued around the early 1950s, and it soon became the [censored]-kicker of many people, then in fallout new vegas, and the other fallout games, it magically dissappears! How does this happen? did some one wave a magic wand and say goodbye AK!, How come theres no mentioned reference in either fallout 3 or NV? or any of the successors put in? or a look-alike gun?

Semi-automatic AK-type rifles are legal and obtainable in most states of the United States, however they may or may not be legal to own or possess depending on state, county, city, and local laws and ordinances. Persons interested in owning one of these types of rifles are strongly encouraged to research the laws where they reside or plan to keep and use the weapon. The 1989 Semi-Automatic Rifle Import Ban (18 USC 925(d)(3)) and the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban specifically banned the AK-47 by name, and many other such weapons (including obvious clones of AK-47's) manufactured after 1994 had to be modified to the letter of the law (removal of barrel threading, bayonet lug and folding stock). This ban expired on September 13, 2004, as part of the law's sunset provision, making all domestically produced semi-automatic AK-47s legal. The import of AK pattern rifles with certain features (i.e. WASR rifles legally are imported with the low capacity single stack magazine) is still banned. However, certain states such as California, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts have specific restrictions which effectively ban new purchases of many semi-automatic rifles, with some mentioning AK-pattern firearms by name.

In short, we know that Bethesda/Obsidian like to provide an as-accurate-as-possible simulation of real life America (google a map of Las Vegas or DC and compare it to New Vegas or Fallout 3) and it wouldn't be particularly accurate if there were AK-47s laying about all over the place considering that the importation and purchase of the AK is very strictly monitored in the US. The M16 on the other hand, which is American, is present.

Haha, casual racism is always funny.....

Regardless. There has never been an AK-47 in Fallout.

Fallout 1 & 2 had the AK-112. A fictional 5mm derivative
Fallout 3 had the Chinese Assault Rifle (no other designation given), a 5.56mm derivative.

I'm not sure why you're upset about the loss of a weapon that has never been in the (canon) games.

You do realize that the AK-47 is a Russian made weapon and if there were any just lying around they would be few and far between. IMHO it shouldn't have been in FO3, unless I am mistaken the Chinese never attacked DC, so why would any be there?

He's got a point though, becuase the AK-47 is a very durable and reliable weapon, also it is one of the most manufactured assault rifles.

You might want to do some actual research into the matter, that article hardly reflects real world conditions. You bolded out the trivial parts. The reality is that the only thing the AWB achieved is stopping threaded muzzles and conspicuously protruding pistol grips hitting the market for a few years.

Today, all flavors of AKs are still imported as "parts kits" with demilled receivers which are then reassembled on US made receivers, while some models arrive in sporterized configurations and are later converted back to the regular style.

Depending on the state you live in, you're probably able to walk into the nearest pawn shop right now and come out with a semi-automatic AK type rifle without much hassle, if any at all. They're immensely popular and very easy to obtain in the US these days.

EDIT: Oh, there's actually a company based in Vegas that deals with building and converting bulgarian and russian made AKs, so having them in the game would be really authentic.

I do understand why there was Chinese assault rifles in D.C
1. It is the capital of the USA, the country which China is at war with!
Let's just say if I was at war with America I would dot Chinese spies all over the place ESPECIALLY in DC
They could uncover secrets in Washington which could help them win the war so there is a good reason why there is Chinese assualt rifles in Fallout 3

I know both of the pawn shops in my city of 25,000 to 30,000 sell AKs and all assortment of guns. None of them are fully automatic but they sell kits so people can do that themselves.

The AK-47 was originally made in 1947 by Kalisnikov hence the name AK-47 so it's not far fetched to think that the game would have a variant of them.

It's an alternate timeline you know, AK-47's where phased out and replaced. *shrugs*

New to Fallout hm? About the only things we know about America after 1950 is that Nixon was president and Elvis was famous in their timeline too.

You can't apply laws of our world to the Fallout world.

Ah yes, because spies usually carry big assualt rifles that you cannot hide under any amount of clothing. Most spies are usually not armed with weapons, but money. They like to buy info, not kill fo rit, killing leaves a mess, paying for the information is much cleaner.

So I buy your Chinese spies in DC theory, it makes sense. It does not make sense that those spies were carrying an arsenal with them.

IIRC, the Chinese Assault Rifles are for the Chinese infiltrators and American defectors to use when given a signal by the Chinese high command. Notice how those Chinese wearing them are in Chinese COMMANDO outfits.

This one I will give you, that makes sense. But I don't buy the spy one. People think that spies are combatants and can kick@ss, when it is simply not true.

Not trying to argue the practicality of it, but i have to point out that a folding stock AK like the chinese AR in F3 can in fact be concealed under a coat.

I double dog dare you to try this in whatever major city you live in. See just how long that folding stock AK remains hidden from view. Even a small handgun provides a telltale bulge underneath all but the loosest of clothing. Have fun with this one and please do tell me how long you manage to avoid unwanted attention.

Ok this one was a little mean, but you really cannot hide any form of an AK under clothing, not even Jabba's MooMoo.

Spy was the wrong word I was simply trying to generalise the reason of Chinese in DC.
Remember Mama Dolce's?
That was the Chinese infiltrators makeshift HQ in DC and I guess if the US army or police raided that place it should be defended so that gives reason for Chinese assault rifles being there.

Actually, they were undercover, and when the War broke out, based on what we see of the skeletons lying in corners and so on, the Chinese used weapons and took over the factory by force. I'm sure they were undercover spec ops or something, based on the fact these men were all wearing uniforms. I feel sorry for those innocent workers being murdered :sadvaultboy:

They wouldn't have survived the war anyway.
