Where are the children?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 12:49 am

Why have I not seen any children anywhere? I haven't gone to diamond city yet so I don't know if you see any there, but I find it to be odd that no families have come to any of my settlements. I want to see children running around and get quests to build a park, gather toys, build a school, or build a crib for a baby. I haven't played the other Fallouts but from what I have heard Fallout 4 is set prior to the other fallouts, so wouldn't it make sense to see children? Have people stopped reproducing? What is up with there being no children?

There are children on the Prydwen, in Diamond City, Vault 81, etc etc. As many if not more than there was in Fallout 3.

Yeah, they are pretty much where I would expect children to be, really.

Pop your head into the schoolhouse in Diamond City sometime.

Do any children come to live in your settlements? Cause that's really what I want to see. Like I said prior I want quests pertaining to helping and taking care of children.

Well if it's quests pertaining to children, there is one I know of in Vault 81. Not exactly the most exciting jaunt, but it's there.

As for settlements, I've heard tell that Children come to settlements, but I've never had one show up. Though I do call the residents of Sanctuary a bunch of children considering how often a Ghoul sighting ten miles away causes them to panic.

No, there aren't any children that come to your settlements for children-related quests, sorry. But, funnily enough, there are Brotherhood of Steel quests where you can take young Squires out to watch you clear out some place. It's pretty cute, and you don't have to worry about the kids being hurt.

Also, just a little unrelated quibble, Fallout 4 is the furthest in the timeline. Nothing to do with kids.

That is kind of the point. I didn't see them at first, but there is actually a few toys scattered around and a few chalk drawings on the deck of the ship. Good envoirmental storytelling by Bethesda, changed my outlook.

Only 3 that I know of so far in Diamond City. One of them is Piper's little sister, who is actually gainfully employed selling the tabloid rag Piper's "objective journalism" churns out for the community. The other two appear to be street urchins who you'll always find playing an infinite game of tag.

Those two kids are a dead giveaway on BGS blatant kidnapping and trafficking cartel of Imperial children from Solitude to Diamond City.....

edit:

WARNING: In your wanderings of the Commonwealth, be particularly respectful should you encounter a unique little girl who is a self proclaimed merchant by the name of Kat. Take care not to offend her unless you wish to earn the wrath of Gus her pet securitron and usher in Armageddon

Actually there is a schoolhouse with about 10 children in it, right there in Diamond City. Just saying.

Diamond City, the Pyrdwen, Vault 81, some settlements here and there, and I've seen a little girl wandering on the railroad tracks with a Sentry Bot (IIRC) protecting her.

Yeah there are children scattered around. My settlement on Nordhagen beach has two kids, one that was there when I got the settlement and one that randomly came later from the beacon.

The casualties of war.

But there are a good amount of children throughout the game, not as enough as Skyrim that makes them an annoyance, but not too few either. A good balance of child characters.

Well that's good to know. I haven't really explored any of the buildings in the city yet other than my own home. :P Too busy trying to track down the missing detective with Piper.

Kind of suprised you missed Piper's little sister, who spends most of her time selling papers in the square of Diamond City.

As for whether or not children should be in the game, short answer: yes. Children are an important part of creating a believable world, and they shouldn't be excluded just because some immature people find them annoying.

I've seen two children so far, both in Diamond City. One hawking newspapers and the other selling water.

Also...there's an *ahem* child that shows up later in the main quest. Won't spoil it but...yeah, a young boy's involved in the quest to find your son. I'll say nothing more.

Well you can actually see them, there's Squire's like Elder Maxson was.

Oh well.

The Brotherhood of Steel apparently, at a certain rank you do quests where you take them into the field with you so they get hands on training.

Or put it another way, the Brotherhood of Steel endorses child-soldiers.

there are lots of children. Pretty much in every settlement, as well as schools. And FO4 is set after other fallouts. I forget what exact number she says, but one BOS knight says, i believe, 10 years after the end of fallout 3

There are plenty of children in the game, although

Spoiler
in the Institute there are a lot of beds and toys to imply children, but I haven't seen a single child yet
which I though was weird.

Honestly, I'm not sure how I would want them to handle this subject. I think that showing that there are indeed children is important, but at the same time the majority of child characters I've seen in games are just plain annoying. It's a lose-lose situation for me: If there are children they annoy me; if children are absent it's just weird.

As awkward as it was looking at baby Shaun,

there should be a few more babies in the wasteland. Even if its just a settler's baby.

Wrap it up in that potato sack cloth for context and call it good.

I can only think of a handful or rpg's that feature kids. Most worlds, you just wander about wondering how awful it must be to have to give birth to a full grown advlt.
