Has anyone encountered the more exotic forms of Yao Guai? I know there are supposed to be albino ones and glowing ones, but I've only ever encountered the stunted ones,
not even the normal ones.

I've encountered quite a few of them. They seem to be more common in the south central and north central portions of the map. I see a fair number of them in the Fort Hagen area as well. Some are definitely rarer than others though. The stunted yao guai seems to be the most common.
Yes, they appear at higher levels as defend the settlement foes or out in the wild.
There are quite a number of places on the map that are always populated by Yao Guai.
I did the rounds last night, Western part of the map just north of and into the glowing sea.
Came across a couple amongst all the tough creatures in the area.
There is a sort of cave between Jamaica Plane and Big John's salvage.
Another spot is Fairline Hill Estates.
Other places too.
As i said the type you see is level dependent
Here's a picture of a glowing one, a pair of which the game dumped on the settlers at the beach.

They are with Boo-Boo stealing Picnic Baskets, and hiding from Ranger Smith
I hear Them more than I see Them, like Bear in Skyrim. You can find the other types more often as Your character levels up.
There are some of them in The Edge of The Glowing Sea. I've already encountered them in the "versions" Albino, Rabid and Dusky, the three most powerful.
I always get a cuddly Yao Guai attacking me under the bridge near starlight Drive-in. Started seeing a few more albino and glowing Yaos once I got past Diamond City. I love going toe to toe with them but mostly just stick a shotgun in their face and BOOM!!!
Just more ingredients for my guy, he goes through pretty serious pain over his Mirelurk Omelet addiction.
Stealing your pic-i-nic basket.
Seriously though, was often wondering this when I walked around the Walden pond area seeing all the 'do not feed the bears' signs until I ran smack into one who was hiding over a hill.
This gave me a chuckle and then it hit me! Thank you, thank you for helping me see yet again, how "clever" the makers of this game are with their word play
I can count on one hand the amount of Yao Guai I've encountered.
Once I hit 70+ I started seeing more of the tougher creatures, 'Claws, Muties, Radscorpions. But Yao Guai seem to be an endangered species in my current game.
You can almost guarantee finding them at abandoned ranger cabins in the south-southwest area. There's also one I ~always~ find IN the city proper, near a weapons workshop in a garage next to a kid's alien-spaceship playground thing, in a back alley. No idea why the poor guy is there.
They do seem to be pretty rare. One of my fav mobs, some of the most gripping fights I've had were early play experiences at low level, stumbling on a YoGi and desperately trying to put it down before the last sliver of health was slashed away by its claws.
Makes me wish there were more mutated carnivorous beast:
wolverines (its contemporary range is far north of Mass, but one could argue that the ecological changes resulting from the war caused it to expand southward)
badgers
beavers (very common in Mass and while not carnivorous, would be hilarious to see Beth's artists render it into a fearsome mutated thing that had a taste for meat)
raccoon (an omnivore, but would still be formidable if they were like, 7 feet tall!)
I cant bring myself to kill Yao Guai. Feel terrible if i have to do it, no idea why. Need to get animal friend i think.
From where do you know that they are part of a settlement attack? I only found settlement attack quests with raiders, super-mutants, synths and synth infiltrators.
I had a pair of glowing ones dropped by the game at Nordhagen Beach and a pair of Duskys dropped at the Slog as part of defend the settlement.
I've also had sentry bots, deathclaws and the burnt ghouls
Not all settlement attacks are really settlement attacks. Most are just random encounters that happen to spawn near your settlement. Did you see a warning that your settlement is under attack?
There are several places where they get spawned.
And any of them can be special from my experience.
Im at level 61 and at the checkpoint near Natick I ran into 3 Shaggy Yao Guai which were about twice as big as the Stunted.
Yes, both times with the Yogi Bears, I was called to defend the settlement.
the random attack at the Slog, for me, is always from the Deathclaw that lives nearby and follows the provisioner.
I've never had a random one at the beach, although you can take sniper potshots at the nearby crabs from over the water.
My favorite settlement raid was 2 super mutant warlords and a dozen radstags at my settlement with all my companions,
the radstags were random spawns that happened into the settlement area over time that never got aggroed, but it was hilarious, spawn in to stop the invasion,
Gate opens
2 supers surrounded in radstags screaming the "commonwealth is ours".
companions in power armor rush the attackers, aggroing the radstags
epic battle between the stag lords and my entourage,
12/10 hilarious af
I am honestly jealous.
The only thing remotely comparable I've seen:
a. One time Knight Rhys was having this inexplicable tantrum inside the Cambridge Police Station, he was in the office to the left front of the building, repeatedly kicking a filing cabinet for like 30 seconds. I couldn't believe it!
b. One time me and Piper are somewhere out and about (my wife actually saw this one too). I have been doing something, looting or something and I turn around and here is Piper down on hands and toes, doing PUSHUPS!? She did like 20 pushups, then hopped up and turned and looked at me like "Yeah? Is there a problem?"
I don't how much of it is intentional (well obviously quite a bit of it IS) but the 'rando' behaviors and stuff are an awesome part of the game. Love that you can be lurking along and hear a firefight startup, explosions as Suiciders detonate, etc. and then go find the corpses, kill the stragglers and loot them. I wish there were more random SM patrols and raiders too. I've only seen one random roving raider group and it was over between Abernathy Farm and the creek that flows past Sanctuary.
Here you go op.
I was in the vicinity of Big John's salvage so went and poked the bears in their den.
Mr and Mrs Yogi Bear with their dead young'un.
I wonder who killed the cub.
Anyway, proof they do exist in the wild.
I got close enough to illustrate their little video piece of the bear mauling you.
Had to have two goes at that because the first time I lost an arm and died.
