Where are you now? #8

Leyawiin. Fighters Guild hall. 7am. My decrepit avatar just woke. He is dressed all it blue: hood, robe and shoes. He will down a quick breakfast and deliver mercantile supplies to two separate agencies. After that he might or might not pay a visit to Rockmilk Cave before beginning the return trip to Weye.

Vilja remains in the Leyawiin Mages Guild basemant. Their mounts, Groucho and Wolfgang are of course tethered at the city stables.

They arrived in Leyawiin shortly before midnight, completing a patrol of the Green. And a blissfully boring patrol it was. Boring and at the end wet.

I'd like to see a few of those pictures, if you haven't posted them in the picture thread already. It sounds similar to what my character Skarsgard is doing, visiting every inn in Cyrodiil. I take a photo at every one, though not necessarily with the sign. They make pretty cool postcards!

I try to get the Inn's sign in the pic, if it has one. Several don't. Reviewed my cache of Inn pics just now and it looks like they would all be banned from this forum unless I put a big censored black box over my companion. You see, she's like Baa and wears only some Shield enchanted jewelry while adventuring. They got all that from their Pict and Scot ancestry I guess. The only one that was presentable was a pic of just the sign at the Inn of Ill Omen. I jumped up and got a closeup of that crow/raven and the ring. Don’t know the significance of that imagery - must have something to do with E.A. Poe’s ‘The Raven’ , or the birds at the Tower in your world. Have an account at Photobucket, but have never used it. I would probably mess up the posting, so I don’t. Thanks for asking.

An re-introduction is probably in order…

Silvonwe is a character with whom I was privileged to travel a couple of years ago. I mention her occasionally; she began as a lowly Alchemist, apprentice to Sinderion. She learned, and grew, and advanced through the Mages Guild. Eventually she became Archmage. She's also the "Hero of Kvatch," a fact that she's nearly forgotten, since she left Martin at the encampment there, never telling him about his situation.

Silvonwe is an Altmer, born under the sign of the Apprentice, a Master Conjurer, a near-Master Alchemist, and an Expert Illusionist. She uses no weapons. (She is level 18, with a Strength of 31. She's a "glass cannon." She's also the highest-level Dead-is-dead character I've ever played. She has been very lucky.)

Recently Silvonwe was sleeping in her quarters, when her dreams were interrupted by a vision of Azura. "Foolish Mortal! Do you believe that Mehrunes Dagon has gone to sleep, as you have?"

Silvonwe answered, "Lord Azura, I have seen in my viewing glass, that nothing but sorrow will come from acting as the Emperor wished, and that the land will be laid waste by Oblivion Gates opening everywhere..."

Azura raised her hand. "So short is your sight. Time is everything to you, and nothing to the immortals, and yet you waste it so. Dagon works as you sleep. His armies strengthen with each passing day. Where once you would have faced a troop of scamps, there are now high dremorae and atronachs. Soon a vast army of Xivilai will stand ready to invade Mundus. There will be no Gates; the walls of Oblivion will fade away, and Mundus will be eaten by the Deadlands."

"Tell me, foolish mortal; what do you think will happen when this mortal Martin dies, and there is no longer a living Septim?"

As Azura faded away, her last words echoed in the chamber. "Act now, Mortal. Awaken and act!"

The rising sun spiked into the Archmage's chamber, and she sprang from her bed. She donned her robes, and her protective rings, and her magic Bag of Holding, full of potions and herbs. She paused only briefly at her Altar of Enchanting, charging some clothing with spells of elemental shielding.

She glanced at the Bloodworm Helm and Staff of Worms on the table. No. She would not take Mannimarco's way. No matter what.

Silvonwe is bound for Kvatch.

...Silvonwe is bound for Kvatch.

Kewl! I like Silvonwe's logic better than Azura's, but she seems bound to her new path. I really like Sindarion and am glad that Silvonewe apprenticed with him.

Thank you. You have so many characters, it helps when you give a little description so the story can be read in context. The only character you don't have to do this with is Wild Elf, of course. Speaking of, will there ever be a Wild Elf update?

This is awesome.

Azura convinced her with "Tell me, foolish mortal; what do you think will happen when this mortal Martin dies, and there is no longer a living Septim?"

A couple of other bits of information might be helpful here. First, Silvonwe trusts Azura. They have a relationship that dates back to events several years ago in Morrowind (no, Silvonwe is NOT the Nerevarine! )

Further, Silvonwe is Archmage. She takes responsibility. She is probably the most powerful individual in Tamriel. She has recently defeated Mannimarco, at great loss to her beloved Mages Guild, and she has developed a fatalistic attitude about the inevitability of conflict and loss.

Silvonwe is a mere 140-some years old, but she has already, in her lifetime, seen many human friends come and go. She doesn't have any way of knowing whether it's the uncertain state of the Heir or of the Bauble which has put the crisis on hold for the moment, but she's quite sure that the Heir is mortal, and that his ultimate death would change everything. High Elves take the Long View.

Besides, I want to test the idea that the Main Quest is more fun when done with a higher-level character.

Again people, I don′t want to be a buzzkill but this is not a fanfic thread even if it′s good read. It′s about where your character currently is and a short description of why

Decrepit sets a good example I think.

"Fine."

Edit: I probably shouldn't post in this thread any more. Having multiple characters, I need to say something more than "X is at Y," or people not familiar with my characters wouldn't know what I was talking about. In the case of Silvonwe, I haven't posted about her for something like a year. Nobody would have known who I was talking about, or why she was doing what she was doing.

Sorry to have been a bother. It won't happen again.

You′re not a bother and you′re always welcome to give us a brief report. I just think the fanfic forum is more suitable for character descriptions and such :)

I’m confused. Is there a thread in the FanFic forum that we’re all supposed to use, or are you saying we should each open a thread there to discuss the daily adventures of our multiple characters?

Glargg’s post is exactly the kind of thing I come back here hoping to find. I love the ones that contain picture links, too, when the pictures are part of the character’s current adventure.

I could be mistaken, but isn’t this the only “Today In” thread on the official forum? I believe that means that we all get to use it as we see fit, and let the mods decide when a post is inappropriate. Again, please correct me if I’m wrong here.

I'm not writing fanfic. I create and role-play characters. My characters are complex, and the "why" of their actions obviously require more exposition than your thread allows. It looks like an incompatibility to me.

I see! Nothing wrong with a bit of nudity when the weather's good in Cyrodiil, but it probably isn't apporpriate for the forum. Skarsgard is guilty of a little skinny-dipping himself, and I believe we have a certain elf around here whose clothes also fall off when she gets near water.

I've thought the sign might be a Poe reference myself. It's a pretty cool sign, very unique.

A nice way to come back to the main quest. I vaguely remember you mentioning a character who was Sinderion's apprentice before.

Silvonwe makes for a very interesting read! Can't wait to hear more!

Mirocu, surely we don't need to be as strict as to impose a word count on this thread? In my opinion, it was a fantastic update - as stated in the title and tag, it tells us where Silvonwe is and why! There's been far more fanfic-esque posts on these threads. Besides, I can't wait to hear more!

I′m not against pic links or longer descriptions of your character′s doings but when dialogues are included then it starts to border fanfic a bit too much imho and my intentions with these threads is to get a somewhat quick update on your character. Longer stories with lots of talk wasn′t what I was going for but I guess the occasional post including that can be ok as I don′t want people to start hating me for this :unsure2:

I′m not saying it isn′t good but dialogues and extensive story-telling is imho more fanfic material than brief updates which is what I′m going for here. I know some think I′m being too strict but I really don′t suggest word count whatsoever. I just think that shorter, descriptive updates that are quick and easy to read can be just as good sometimes

Skingrad, late evening, Fighters Guild

After spending some time in Chorrol, Lothran decided to head for the wine and tomatoe producing town near the Valenwood border. He stopped by Brindle home to talk to the people there and to get a rest before continuing.

Quite the uneventful journey south which was fine with him and before day became evening he enjoyed the beautiful area around the Surilie and Tamika vineyards. He′s currently spending the night at the local Fighters Guild and the next day is fully devoted to Skingrad re-exploration.

Gosh, I thought it was a community thread, since multiple threads on the same topic are frowned upon. I’d hate to see the longer RP posts disappear. For those who just want the where and why, it’s easy to just skip over the rest. I love reading how other peoples’ characters experience the game, complete with imaginary dialog. It’s inspiring. But I would not expect everyone to expand their character updates into full-blown narratives, no matter how much I enjoy them. It’s just too much to ask.

Darian (the Redguard scout) and Velwyn are presently in Cheydinhal for the purpose of tracking down an imposter. Their stop at the Roxey Inn was enjoyable. The place was packed! Velwyn immediately struck up a conversation with someone in chameleon gear. It took a moment for Darian to realize what was happening, and that his friend was not talking about mudcrabs to the thin air. (I think it might have been Claude Maric.)

It sounds like Skarsgard has been having a blast on his pub tour of Cyrodiil. Maybe Darian can round up a few more friends and go on a road trip. It could be mayhem. Velwyn is very tightly wound.

I agree with Grits - this is a community thread. Other people have made 'where are you now?' threads in the past. We don't need every post to be a novella, but if someone chooses to post a longer post, then why should anyone have the right to send them away?

And my apologies if this sounds like I'm having a go at you, Mirocu - it's most certainly not. Perhaps, in the interest of accommodating everyone, if someone feels a post is too long, the post could be put in spoiler tags?

Anywho, back on topic. I'm currently considering starting a new character, and look at Cyrodiil through a female's eyes.

Dear friend mirocu, I might suggest that you reconsider things. This thread has indeed developed a heavy aura of second-guessing that stifles both creativity and sharing. When one attempts to constrain comments on a thread, I fear it is to invite the lonely sound of crickets in the night.

I must confess that my elven pvssyrbox has avoided providing updates here as of late. She would happily do so to the tune of 200-400 words at a time but, like Pseron, is uncomfortable here. Such updates are not ‘fan fiction’. Having posted nearly half a million words of fan fiction across two forums, I hope my thoughts on the matter carry some degree of influence.

Like glargg, I have great respect for the host of a thread, but I would humbly suggest that you invite more flexibility to account for differing opinions and styles. After all, this long series of threads has seen four different hosts (you, Talos, Decrepit and Lady Mara), and it is clear that many of us are delighted by a bit more detail in the updates, even to include screenshots right here (when they directly support an update) instead of always posted in the 'screenshot' thread.

Bear in mind that readers who prefer shorter unembellished posts are under no obligation to read longer accountings. I would also avoid suggesting separate threads for shorter and longer updates; this one has served our community well. . . until recently.

I'm sure that discomfort is not Mirocu's intention at all.

I never intended to go out of bounds. It's hard to know how much to write, given that I have all of these different characters. The "why" of their actions isn't easy to tell, unless you "show it." That's probably my failure as a writer, and it's one of the several reasons I have avoided posting in the fan fiction forums. Unlike the outpouring of your delightful pvssyrbox, my efforts would fetch up as brief shadows on the wall, I'm afraid.

Introducing Eleanor Beauchamp, a Breton Mage born under the sign of the mage.
This is my second attempt at a Mage character - my first, Aerin, only survived a few days until I realized I didn't enjoy his character. Everything seemed too easy. Eleanor is more fragile - she's not a master of destruction by any means, and relies heavily on the other schools of magic.

She arrived in the Imperial City in early morning, and she soon headed to the entrance to the Imperial Prison Sewers - the dream she'd had that night seemed surprisingly real, and it spooked her. On the night of the Emperor's death, she'd had a dream about his dying wishes. She didn't think for a moment that it was a mere coincidence. She's currently resting in the Chorrol Mage's guild, which she joined almost immediately after her late arrival in the city. In the morning, she will speak with Jauffre in Weynon Priory, to see what he has to say.

Edit: I think we've all blown this out if proportion. Mirocu was just trying to keep order in the thread, and while not all of us are agreeing with each other, it's a fairly minor thing. Why don't we just put this behind us and continue to enjoy the thread? :)

Well, Baa saw the recent posts on this thread then went to Olof’s and drank all of his mead. Stumbling out the front door, she tripped and shot herself in the knee with a poison arrow. Now she is laying there in the ice and snow spurting blood. Looking up she sees a Bruma guard hovering over her, “You look just like your statue,” he says, as Baa fades away.

Come on guys/gals, get it back together. This thread is too enjoyable to screw it up over an occasional long post. Just keep the thread between the ditches.

I′m sad to see how so many starts to feel uncomfortable about posting here. It certainly was not my intention at all  When I started this thread series long ago now, I just wanted to know where the character is on the map and possibly why (collecting Nirnroots for instance), it′s actually not about RP at all.
If someone wants to make a long post about why and how the character ended up there then it′s perfectly fine, I just don′t want it to go out of hand and become something I didn′t intended it to be.

This came up with Phon too a while back and he understood perfectly what I meant with my intentions with this thread. I′m really saddened to see how things turned out now. I don′t want to restrict anyone from writing what they want, I just feel that a thread′s topic should not be forgotten.

Sorry if this made anyone feel uncomfortable about posting here. You′re all good people and I don′t want this to get blown out of proportions

Mirocu, this is no one's fault and everyone's fault. In other words, it's all a big misunderstanding. Perhaps people's posts have just expanded over time and some of us took this thread to be a RP thread, while others knew it's original purpose. Today these opinions clashed - it was bound to happen - but now I think we should all just make up, shake hands and move on :)
