Where are you now? #8

now I think we should all just make up, shake hands and move on
Don′t want anything else and I think you were completely right about the rest too. It′s somewhat inevitable I guess when one thing is being discussed over a great length of time. Along the way the original idea can get lost.

Anyway let′s just do what Solitudian suggested

Eleanor Beauchamp is standing beside the Chapel of Kvatch, staring at the ruined city, Martin Septim at her side. So much has changed in her life, in is little time! She single handedly fought her way through Oblivion, destroying the gate to Tamriel and saving the city. She fought her way to the Castle with the town guards, and for her bravery was awarded a guard cuirass, which she now proudly wears despite her preference for robes.

She now needs to head the Weynon Priory with Martin, and speak with Jauffre. Somewhere in between her great battles and world-saving, she needs to find time to get the rest of the Mage's Guild recommendations she needs. So much to do!

I'm sure that discomfort is not Mirocu's intention at all.

I never intended to go out of bounds. It's hard to know how much to write, given that I have all of these different characters. The "why" of their actions isn't easy to tell, unless you "show it." That's probably my failure as a writer, and it's one of the several reasons I have avoided posting in the fan fiction forums. Unlike the outpouring of your delightful pvssyrbox, my efforts would fetch up as brief shadows on the wall, I'm afraid.

You don't have any "failures" as a writer. I like reading your stuff.

The way I see it, a fan fiction is a much more extensive piece of work. It'll have chapters, and when you read it you know you're going to be sitting there for a while. I don't see the stuff you write to be fan-fictionish, glarrg. Matter of fact, I've noticed you often update several of your character's stories in these Where are you now? threads. This seems to be right on-target with the 'rules' of these threads.

I'm sorry to be disagreeable, M, but the "original idea" has been lost. Before you took over hosting this topic, last December, it was acceptable to post excerpts of fan fiction, short bits of imagined dialog, screenshots, etc. It was easy to follow what a character was doing.

We no longer have a thread running where we can do that. In my case, with multiple characters, I simply can't compress this into a sentence or two, and when I'm bringing back characters who have been inactive for a while, I need to tell who they are, and why they are doing what they're doing.

I don't have the simplicity of having a single well-known character, as you do.

I have been following a long-established practice on these forums. I try not to make my posts over-long, but I need to say what I have to say.

And you don't even want me to post a picture, which would probably save words, if that's what you're after.

I guess I just don't see the need for the rules. Don't we want to encourage sharing?

I think mirocu had only the best of intentions when he mentioned longer posts, but when it is time for a new thread, perhaps we can change the name a little to reflect how much imagination is put into the updates we share. It's very interesting to read everybody's roleplays and I don't want it to become too limited. Now that's out of the way we can get back to sharing stories, I hope.

I finally realized that you can turn the camera around on the PS3. So of course now that’s all I’m doing. Taking a picture is something of a gymnastic event. The links are photos of my TV.

http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h361/grits29/DarianNight.png and Velwyn Benirus are on the Black Road approaching Chorrol. Here’s what happened while they were in Cheydinhal, in spoiler tags for scrolling convenience.

Spoiler
Darian stepped into the cool air of late evening. The sky was clear, the moons were bright, and http://i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h361/grits29/EveningOutsidethePrison.png stood awaiting his release from prison.

“I steered clear of it,” Velwyn was saying to a mountain of steel-clad orc.

The orc shuddered. “Horrible creatures.”

So much for keeping this whole mess quiet, thought Darian. “Brag!” he called. “And Elidor and Rienna! What are you doing here?”

“Checking up on you, soldier.” Rienna clapped Darian on the shoulder. “We heard you had some trouble at the Newlands Lodge.”

Velwyn shouldered his way between the armored fighters. “I told them it was a setup. You simply moved a bottle of beer, and everyone cried thief. I knew it was a mistake to patronize a dark elf bar.”

“It’s true,” said Darian. “I was the only honest man in that place, I’d wager.”

Velwyn looked affronted.

Darian gave him the eyebrow. “Should we discuss the manor you just sold me?”

“Drinks!” Elidor announced. “Back to the guild hall. Unless you want to return to the Newlands?”

“I do,” said Darian. “I paid for a room and a meal, and I intend to have them.”

The fighters exchanged uneasy looks. “We’ll just stand here on the steps for a while, then,” said Rienna.

Velwyn brushed off his sleeves and straightened his doublet. “You lead from here,” he said to Darian.

The two of them headed back toward the inn. “What’s next?” asked Velwyn. “Assuming we survive the night. The Newlands is infested with orcs. We’d be safer in the chapel undercroft.”

Darian had no concerns about the Orum gang. It was the criminals in uniform that bothered him. “Let’s pack our gear tonight. At first light we can get the hells out of here. Head toward Chorrol and see how that Breton likes his drunkard brother.”

Velwyn started to answer, then once again his nerves seemed to get the better of him. He whirled around and stared into the shadows. “Did you hear a noise?” he whispered.

“Should we discuss the manor you just sold me?” :D Touche' Darian!

I have to say, Darian is looking sharp in that pic. I cannot make male characters look even half that good.

'I steered clear of it. Horrible creatures.' - Gee, I wonder what they were talking about? Mudgoblins no doubt.

My inner self tells me not to post this, but I going to anyway. I can always change my avatar and go back to FO3. So:

I’ve pondered this thread all day - it disturbs me. Being a scientist/engineer type, I’ve done my share of research, so I spent the morning rereading all 201 posts in ‘Where are you now? #5’ started by Lady Mara back in Nov. 2011. Then I reread most of #6, started by mirocu on Dec 23, two minutes after #5 was closed.

#5 thread was wide ranging and had a bit of everything in it: long post, short post, links to screen shots and spoilers, even two chapters of what I would call fan fiction. I made my first post in ‘Where are you now?’ (#1 I guess) in June of ’11, and up until #6, it was about the same types of postings. There didn’t seem to be any restrictions or ‘rules’. And, yeah, there was a lot of stuff I remember skipping for exactly what mirocu has tried to stop - long short stories with nothing to do with the question about where you are now. I got so fed up once, I even reported one of them and asked the moderator to limit the blowhard to some number of pages.

Starting with mirocu’s #6, there was an immediate change. Right off, it was suggested to Phon to post his screen shots in that thread, even though mirocu had posted his own links to screen shots near the end of #5. Phon complied. Later on, somewhere between there and #8, Phon got nailed for long, fan fic type posts. And they were really looong and I usually skipped them. Again Phon complied, but he’s no longer on the thread either. Others got the message and cut back on fluff.

Now, what glargg posted to start this mess was no where near what I would consider skipping. Maybe if glargg hadn’t used quotes and written it in a different person he would have slid right on by. The ‘rules’ seem to get tighter the farther we go. Both mirocu and glargg have their points, but if ‘rules’ get too tight, there will not be anyone left to post, ie. Pseron Wyrd and Acadian. Rules, if any are ever needed, should be broad and liberally interpreted. If you all change things at 200, don’t restrict it too much or the thread will die.

Baa has been asleep in her bed in the pirate ship at the IC harbor all day because that’s what she wanted to do. [where and why!]

Where: Green Road south of Bravil.
Why: The need for speed.

Through eyes half closed against the wind I could see the pink blur that appeared at the fringe of my range. It was large and streaking toward us. Sensing my thoughts, Superian quickly pulled us back from our intoxicating thunder and speed. Within the span of a few heartbeats, the Black Horse Courier drew to an abrupt stop beside us.

"Hail, Buffy." The mist of heavy breathing from the two horses swirled together, producing an eerie fog in the cool morning air. The owner of the soft Breton accent continued, "How fares my sister of the black horse?" As she dragged a sleeve across her face to remove some dust, I could recognize her. The stallion, despite being tired, was agitated. He stretched his neck toward Superian, and blew through flaring nostrils at her.

My mare snorted her response and, with flattened ears, pranced laterally several paces to open some distance. "Good morning, Surani. What news do you carry?"

I propose we call it "Character updates" How about that? The thread is us providing an update for what our character is doing, where he/she is, how he/she is feeling, etc. Post length can be as open as we'd like it to be, because it is, in fact, creative writing.

If somebody wants to post super-massive text, we as a community could maybe decide if it's something okay for OB: General, or if it needs to be moved. The stuff glargg has been posting seems totally fine to me...I wouldn't consider it inappropriate at all. .

Woo! You even had a quote in that bit of excellent prose.

You’ve been around real horses it seems. We had one once, way back, named Lady Ann, a retired Tennessee Walker. Every time I rode her down a lane through the woods, she would find the lowest tree limb she could get under and proceed to try to knock me off no matter what I did with reins or spurs.

Where: I’m over here.
Why: Because that’s where I want to be.

Chorrol, south gate. My decrepit avatar, Vilja and Groucho are about to exit the city, reclaim their mounts and Wolfgang at the stables, and begin the return trek to Weye.

They traveled there:
  • on an official road-patrol assignment.
  • to deliver packages to both Merchants Guild and Gold Horse Courier agents.
  • to restock their sales shoppe with spoils from recent adventures.
  • All of the above.
Between this report and last they of course returned from Leyawiin, gathering taxes-due from Imperial Bridge Inn en route. Came near to losing Arrowspeed too, thanks to my avatar's rash decision to continue north on the Yellow rather than stop for the evening at Gori Releis (sp?) priory. (Following the ambush they ended up limping to Fort Akatosh to pass what remained of the night.) Next day they rode to the Imperial City, grabbed new assignments, patrolled the Blue to Cheydinal, collected tax at Roxey Inn, and stayed the night at Weye Manor.

Sounds like a plan to me, but restrict fan fiction from the start. Thumbs up!

Edit: Oh. Oh. I forgot.
Where: At my computer.
Why: I don’t remember right now.

Sounds like you guys have got a plan! And we're nearly at the end of the thread too.

I've been playing Oblivion far more than I should have, but that's OK. It's Oblivion, after all.
Eleanor Beauchamp went to the Imperial City to meet Baurus, whom she's been told is the only surviving member of the Emperor's guard (thanks to the alternative start mod, she's never been near the Imperial Sewers). While she was in the city she ran into Fergus, a man she'd met a few days previously on her way to Kvatch. He'd invited her to accompany him to the City, but she'd declined - she had to fetch Martin from Kvatch, after all! But now he had nothing to do, so she asked him to accompany her, an invitation which he gladly accepted.

So now Eleanor and Fergus are back in Kvatch, having recieved a letter from Savlian Matius. Kvatch is being rebuilt, and the people need Eleanor's help once again.
(I've been browsing Nexus quite a bit today, so I have a few new mods to play with ;) )

This is a very good idea, and might I be the one starting the first one? That thread series would suit us much better I think

Thus this thread series has come to an end.
