Where can I find good quality arrows?

Post » Sun May 01, 2011 11:03 pm

I've been having much trouble finding good quality arrows lately. All I can find in most shops are Iron or Chitin. I'm specifically looking for glass, but bonemold and silver are more then welcome, and if some place sells anything better then those(including enchanted) i'd love to hear about it. Hard to play my Thief the way I want without a good supply of arrows. Just now getting to the point where I can 2 shot most normal mobs(and one shot stupid stuff like cliff racers), but now I encounter harder stuff and Iron won't even hurt it.

I feel your pain. I only come across maybe one or two glass arrows occassionally when exploring a dungeon, and I usually end up selling them because I can't find a good enough supply to use them regularly in combat.

I was just in Caldera, and Verrick Gemain, the Trader, has 20 glass arrows for sale. Pathetic, I know. I've never been able to find a good supply of glass.

Why bother? The damage increase due to the arrow itself is trivial compared to the effect of the bow. Your character's Strength also plays a significant role. The arrow only adds a couple of points, unless you're talking about a couple of rare and expensive types, which are too valuable to use in anything but a desperate "life and death" situation. You can solve the "iron won't affect it" problem by having the bow enchanted with any enchantment at all (Note that an "On Strike" effect will only work if you find a way to beat them over the head with the bow itself). I favor Bonemold longbows, although there are 2 ways to get a better one - but not in the General topic.

I've regularly taken down high-level Daedra and other powerful adversaries with 2-4 plain iron arrows, a bonemold longbow with a trivial enchantment so it affects undead or resistant daedra, and decent strength. Firing from ambush (while sneaking) can be absolutely devastating, and the addition of another 2 or 3 points of damage by relying on expensive arrows shouldn't make much difference to the outcome. For a good part of the game, I was making my own Corkbulb arrows (using Morrowind Crafting), which are even weaker than Chitin, for routine shots against normal wildlife. Against "cliffies", it was still "one hit, one kill". My characters sometimes carry about 5 "good" arrows for "emergencies", but rarely, if ever, use them.

The one trader/archer in Suran (across the street from Desele's House of Earthly Delights) has a reasonable selection of arrows, there are others in the town, and you'll find still more in various trader and armorer shops throughout the province (Caldera, Vivec FQ, etc.), if you still insist on littering the landscape with costly debris. At semi-low levels, some of the skeletal archers in Tombs will carry arrows with some rather impressive enchantments, but the best ones in my opinion (or worst, if they're flying in your general direction), the "Grey Shafts of Holding", are only available for a few levels.

My usual preference for marksman is the dwemer crossbow. Damage of 30-30. I usually buy silver bolts from the trader in balmora that is across from the Eight Plates place.

If you're on the pc there's an official plugin that adds a Fletcher in Vivec Foreign Quarter. She sells some wicked enchanted ammunition.

I second that. Her selection of throwing stars and darts may also have you considering a Marksman option that doesn't require dealing with degrading weapon condition...

Yeah but if you have the LaFemme armor plug in it's kind of creepy doing business with him because he has boobs.

For some reason, everytime I load morrowind, it would say that the master file for the fletcher in Vivec couldn't be found, so I figured I was screwed out of that route, but it works, regardless of the error I keep getting, so whatever ^^. Lots of nice marksman stuff in there.

Also, thanks Adaren for the tip on glass arrows, that was much appreciated, I love how they look, so now I can go buy a ton. Also, thanks to Flamingstealthbanana for the tip on those Ebony Arrows ^^

It's not exactly rocket science to use the CS, but I'd rather not HAVE to if you know what I mean. It's the principle of the thing. I'm not the least bit homophobic or put off by cross dressers or anything like that. It just seems like a ridiculous oversight by the programmers and it ruins immersion badly.

as kovacius said.. arrows are academic compared to your marksman skill in general.

in both MW and OB I always use the plain iron bows and iron arrows and never have problems taking down high level enemies in a few shots.

glass/daedric arrows are good for one thing... selling.

If you have Bloodmoon go behind the Thirsk meadhall. There is a hollow stump you can open. Inside there are Ebony Arrows of Slaying. They do 5000 damage (they instantly kill anything in the game, only be careful if somebody has strong reflection magic becasue they can backfire). They are by far the best arrows in the game.

A note on the Ebony Arrows of Slaying Gandler mentioned, there's literally only five in the entire game which more than counters their massive power. Iron arrows are really the best you can use in the game, the others are too expensive or rare to bother with for the tiny increase in power, although archer enemies often carry better arrows for free, especially the Skeletal Archers Kovacius mentioned. It's more cost effective in the long run to get a random little enchantment on your bow and iron arrows than it is to buy loads of glass ones, I used to buy nothing but silver arrows before I discovered that an enchanted bow could hit physical immunes and I was always short on cash. It's amazing how much those costs add up. Expensive arrows are better later in the game when you've got several hundred thousand septims and need something to waste all your cash on, I find.

I have bought glass arrows from him often, but usually I'm happy with iron arrows or enchanted arrows found in leveled loot using the marksman mod.

I greatly appreciated this tip! I dunno, it just feels "wrong" to use some of the best bows in the game with iron arrows. It took a little while to find the guy for the first time, though ...

There is a smith in Vivec foreign quarter plaza, across the mages guild, who sells a restocking supply of enchanted arrows.
I think they are not incredibly powerful ones, but Ive always found em handy.
