I've never played any of the elder scrolls games so i'm not sure what the gameplay is all about. but i cant find any info on the official web page about gameplay. i know its about swords, spell and wandering about. but what are you trying to achieve in the game?
I'm not really into spell casting games so will this not be for me or can i still play it without using spells?
i liked red dead redemption is the game somewhere along those lines and the way the free-roam and gameplay works?

Different people can go into TES games and take away different things from the experience, you can use skills and level up your character, join a guild and climb through the ranks, focus on the main quest, do loads of side quests, go exploring and dungeon diving or you can go on massive killing sprees, it's all about what you as a player, want from the game.

You can think of it as red dead redemption, but with wayyyyy more side quests, much larger things to hunt (dragons, mammoths), and a much much more interactive environment (steal some plants from the local herbalist to create that poison you need to finally take down the troll guarding a dungeon you need to get into to complete a quest).
You can play without using spells, hell you can even play with just killing things with a torch if you want. If you refuse to use spells, probably your best chance of survival is to play a stealth archer and strike enemies from the shadows.

Hmmm... a bit hard to describe, actually, having to think about it and put it down.

It's a first (or third) person game where you use weapons, spells, and (new addition) Dragon Shouts to defeat your opponents. In regards to combat, it's a bit more than a hack-and-slash- enemies and you have shields, can block blows, so it's a strategy where you have to make sure your attacks hit while making sure their attacks don't (which is pretty standard). But it's an RPG, so dialogue is a big thing, and there are skills to go along with that.

The leveling system is intuitive by the fact that you don't kill a dozen goblins to get better at picking a lock. You can only get better at lockpicking by lockpicking (or being trained by more skilled lockpickers).

No, you don't have to use spells. If you want, you can go through the entire game with a sword and shield in hand and never touch any of the magic systems.

Never having played RDR, but I assume yes. You don't have to follow the main quest, or anything. You can just walk around and explore and come back to it at your leisure.

A simulated world, based losely on the mechanics of pen and paper RPG's like Dungeons & Dragons, which were in turn based on 60's fantasy pulp fiction.

The reason people on these boards are so passionate is that they feel a degree of ownership of the game and its world, since they have so much creative contribution to it.

its a world similar to RDR in that you can go anywhere and do anything. there are people through out the world with problems that they could use your help with. you can be anything you want. from a axe wielding barbarian, a spell casting demon sumoning mage, a back stabbing assassin that hides in the shadows or anything in between.

Elder Scrolls is a series of 1st-person, action-adventure oriented, first person, open world fantasy role playing game. Yes, that's the simplest way to put it. There are really no other games which fit the category. You basically create your character and put them in the world, which you can explore freely, and start adventuring. There's a main quest for those interested in doing it, or you could go on countless side-quest and major questlines. There are 3 basic archetypes for a character, stealth, combat and magic, but you can be any mix of the above as well. The combat is not as complex as some beatemups, because some of the combat has to be skill based, since it's an RPG. You choose your skills at the start and you level up to get mroe powerful and defeat more powerful enemies and get better stuff, and complete more quests. If you want, you don't have to do any quests, and can just explore or engage in the world, although most would find that uninteresting, it's still an option.

It's the pinnacle of free roam games. Think RDR but with more choices, freedom. I hardly ever use spells either btw, just my bow and me. You can just ignore every single quest and wander about, collect items which you can put down and SEE.

Then on the flip side, you can go through the main quest without stopping.

What do you wanna do?

Single player only. Also, another difference from RDR is that the entire world is open from the beginning. There is usually a short tutorial "mission" at the beginning to get you comfortable with the controls and interface, but after that, you can go everywhere (Unlike RDR where you need to do so much of the main quest to get into Mexico.)
