Where can I find these spells?

Post » Mon Dec 14, 2009 2:34 am

Hey, I'm trying to do the Mage's Guild Quest 'Vahtacen's Secret'. For this I need four spells: Fire Damage, Frost Damage, Fortify Magicka and Damage Magicka. I have Fire and Forst Damage in scrolls, but I need to know where to find Fortify Magicka and Damage Magicka. Scrolls or spells, I'm not fussed.

Thanks.

Before entering the chamber with the pillars, there is a chest containing the scrolls needed... just save before using them if you mess up...

Check around in Vahtacen-- rummage through chests and such. There's one somewhere (I forget exactly where, but easy to find) that has a whole bunch of scrolls in it.

Ninja'd by mere seconds..... :D

Even if you mess up I've heard they re-spawn in that chest after three days.

And always remember, if you don't find those scrolls somewhere in Vahtacen, you need Damage Magicka and Fortify Magicka on Touch; not Drain Magicka or Fortify Magicka on Self. The pillar is very specific :P

Good luck!

If you want to learn the spells, you can find a full list of all the spells in the game and who teaches them http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Spells in the Wiki.

Quick, and possibly silly question, I am doing this quest right now and I've found the scrolls with the required spells but when I try casting the one that drains magicka (scroll is called Sever Magicka) nothing seems to happen. I notice that is it on touch so there is obviously something I'm missing or haven't quite figured out. Could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Do I have to attack the pillar or something like that?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Touch or targeted spells work equally well on the pillar. To use the touch version, make sure you are standing close enough to the pillar to actually touch it. As best I recall, there are little pylons placed around the pillar to orient the caster and you have to cast the appropriate spell on the side of the pillar that matches the pylon. I forget how the pylons are identified but they match the spell type need for that side.

EDIT; Drain and damage spells work equally well. I remember using the Sever Magicka spell. One word of caution, be sure you are ready for a fight before you open that pillar. There are some seriously tough fights ahead of you.

No, you don't need to cast the spells on an particular side of the pillar. Just need to cast them in the right order, and be close enough for touch spells.

(BTW, why not create a new topic vs necromance an ancient thread?)

This happens when someone searches for info (which they are constantly admonished to do) and finds a thread that matches their question,

Sorry about the misinformation with the pylons. It's just the way I did it and it worked.

This is a big thank-you for the quick and very helpful replies to my question. I managed to finish the quest without much difficulty.

As for the person who suggested my making a whole new thread. I'd much rather search for an answer first and then ask the question just in case the answer i needed had already been given. Plus adding a post to an old thread takes up much less space on the servers as compared to making an entire new thread.

Thanks again all!
