Oil cans, soap, flip lighters (and other junk items).

edit: Use your RB button to tag them for search, which make a little magnifying glass appear when you mouse over an item that has that component.

Paint cans are another source, as long as they're not empty.

You can also buy shipments from NPCs. I don't know which ones have them in stock.

Make it! You can manufacture cutting fluid (which breaks down to oil) at a chemistry station using 2 acid, 8 bone, 2 purified water and 3 steel. :)

Option is to make water with water purifiers, sell water and buy oil.
Oil is also used for turrets.

Also, if you have the level 2 Scrapper perk then objects that contain any ingredient that you tagged for search will glow, making them easier to spot. Even containers such as filing cabinets and drawers will glow if such an item is inside them.

Anything that looks like a garage, workshop, tool shed or similar will have some oil cans and the like. Some places with maintenance areas (Basemant of Suffolk County School or Super Duper Mart) will also have a little supply.

Carla sells shipments of oil. She is a bit expensive though.

If you really want to make money then you need to make jet. You need fertilzer and plastic for that and both are sold as shipments as well. Connie Abernathy has fertilzer and Percy in Diamond City sells shipments of plastic.

Brahmin in your settlements naturally produce fertilzer and Institute Rifles are a good source of plastic.

Jet making beats the crap out of water farming. Jet weights nothing and is quite valuable. Making jet earns xp. Jet is quite useful in combat especially combined with psycho. You don't need any skills to craft it. Just a dirty lab.

Seriously. I can't stop using jet since I first tried despite my initial hesitation. Please send help.

Really? I never knew that, always end up with a brahmin at my settlements. Always just thought they were for flavour, make it more farm like lol.
You learn something everyday, thanks for this info :D

Make cutting fluid and be sure to tag it's ingredients as well as oil so you don't miss it when exploring.

  • Get some Oil in your inventory and select it for TAG FOR SEARCH and every item that potentially gives OIL will have a magnifying glass next to it (note you can do this for any item).
  • Craft Cutting Fluid (Chem Station > Utility). Requires BONE, ACID, (I'd TAG both of these too) PURIFIED WATER, STEEL. Note that you should have a dedicated water purifier location anyway so Purfied Water should not be a problem.

NOTE: Make sure you are at a place where you have a supply of STEEL available before crafting CUTTING FLUID as it requires more steel to make than it produces when broken down. The crafting station will be more than happy to break down the Cutting Fluid you just made in order to make more....be careful.

Also, a good early game Water Purification setup I have found:

  • Get Starlight Drive Inn as a Settlement.
  • Scrap everything you can there.
  • Place 3 medium Generators each with a large Water Purifier in the small puddle (you may be able to fit 4, but I didn't try that hard as 3 fit pretty easily).
  • Place a wall completely around the pond setup (you choose but I used 4 cement foundations at the corners and used the full green tin walls between them).
  • Stop by occasionally to collect the water (until you can get it set up in a caravan route).

I've never had an issue of attacks at the location, but I've never built it up much further (certainly have only assigned a settler long enough to assign them a caravan route). I guess if you later want to build up the area, it won't be an issue but I had this setup running full steam before LVL 5.

You can get purified water with only water pumps. You just need to have more water production than there are settlers, and purified water will be automatically and regularly deposited into your workbench.

To the OP, even you collect all the oil cans, oil canisters, etc. from everywhere like I have been doing (and I'm up to level 60), that still may not be enough oil for you in the long run. You have to craft cutting fluid or buy oil at some point.

Or don't mod so much, or mod judiciously. Save your resources for a really good mod that will last you a long time.

It's all over the place if you know where to look (or you can buy oodles from a lot of vendors).

Suggestion: Try to make something with oil when you don't have it and then mark it for search. Then, every time you find something with oil capability a magnifying glass will appear next to the item. If you have the scrapper perk (level 2), the item or container with the oil will actually be highlighted. I use it all the time for adhesive since I make my own oil with Cutting Fluid. Of course, I also make a lot of adhesive, but I also do A LOT of modding.

The default Brahmin at Abernathy Farm in my game has disappeared. :(

I have not see it for at least 10 levels and it's last raider attack was even longer than that.

I suppose I can simply use the console commands to spawn one...

Apparently there's someone out by Sunshine Co-op that sells them! Who knew! I'm gonna buy an entire herd of 'em! Of course, what I'm gonna do with all that fertilizer, I have no idea, but...

Thanks. I'll go check it out. I suppose it will be a wander salesperson like Gene who sells junk yard dogs.

Yes. I forget her name, but I learned about her yesterday. Who knew? I'm on my 5th playthrough and I've never even met her.

Personally I think selling water is far simpler. Build the generators and the purifiers, and you're done. No resources needed, and no time spent crafting it. I produce enough water to go around to every vendor in the game once a day and clear out their entire supply of caps, and I've invested an extra 500 caps with nearly all of them with Cap Collector 3.

The issue there is all the fast traveling! It's as bad as Skyrim on a sales run. Just plain annoying. I sell my water too, but usually only to my own vendors or Carla or the dude that shows up at Ten Pines. Me, I sell ammo and drugs and I make a mint. Wait... does that make me a thuggy?

How is that any different? You've gotta travel around to all of the different vendors to sell the chems too. If it's a matter of the weight, I just load a companion up with as much as they can carry, which is an infinite amount if you drop it and order them to pick it up.

I sell the chems and ammo if I happen to be in a settlement with vendors (I'm including Diamond City in that). Water just weighs too much so I don't carry it around. Besides, since I always have vendors in all my settlements, usually just sell to them anyhow.

I'm a rich, rich woman now. So very, very rich... :)
