All traders restock every 73 hours. Check every box and bin and crate when you are scavenging, you'll be surprised what you find, in terms of ammo. Try Springvale School; this is a good starter dungeon, and you should find Chinese Pistols, Assault Rifles, Hunting Rifles, 10 mm Pistols among other things like lead pipes, combat knives and sledgehammers. If you're really having a problem, take the Scrounger perk, and you'll never want for ammo again.

Flak and Shrapnel in Rivet City tend to have most ammo types in decent quantity. Decent guns you usually have to go out and find rather than buy. If you do the Galaxy News Radio quest for Three Dog you may find a clue that will lead you to the Xuanlong Assault Rifle, one of the best all-round small guns in the game. Another even easier unique gun to get is Lincoln's Repeater which can be found in the Museum of History Offices.

Amazon Queen mentioned the Xuanlong Assault Rifle, and being a small guns user I have to agree it's one of the best guns in the game.

Showing a very minor spoiler here, it just tells you what building the puzzle is in to get to the Xuanlong. The reason for naming the building is so you can be sure to save your game before going into the building in case you mess up the puzzle, you only have one shot at getting the puzzle done correctly then you cant get the Xuanlong unless you use a console command.

If you can make it through to the outcast outpost(Shows up when you install Operation Anchorage) Then finish the Anchorage thing, the armory has some good stuff....various relics and whatnot from the war...in functioning condition.

Another really good weapon that you can get early is A3-21's Plasma Rifle, a quest reward for completing The Replicated Man a certain way. With that and the Xuanlong, you can wipe out probably 90 percent of the enemies you'll encounter.

For general guns and ammo I'd suggest Flak 'n Shrapnel at Rivet City, Gustavo at Tenpenny Tower or Karl at Meresti. What they have available depends on your level, though.

If you're looking for the powerful unique weapons then the advice posted here already is pretty much spot on.

If you head up to the Republic of Dave, you can pick up Ol Painless there, a unique hunting rifle.

Definitely head on up to Republic of Dave for O'l Painless, a stronger version of the hunting rifle.

Me too, but the only problem he might have is all of the Ghouls, being a low level with super weak weaponry is a disadvantage. And lets not forget Evergreen Mills has ALOT of Raiders and a Behemoth, but you can just avoid him without opening the gate,
