Where can I make spells?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:44 pm

Just made a Mage type character and I got into the Mage's College at Winterhold. So far I've found an Alchemist and Enchanting table Is there an Altar of Spellmaking in the college or did they change things from Oblivion?

You cannot at the moment, although I'm sure knowing Bethesda they will release a DLC later, that does just that.

For some unfathomable reason the best part of TES, the part that made their name and fortune, has been removed.

Well the spells do seem really powerful, guess there's no need if there are 96 spells, just would be cool if they kept the spellmaking system.

I lament the fact that one of the most enjoyable features was removed from this game. There is no logic behind this totally insane idea...

96 spells, many of which are just slightly more powerful versions of other spells...
In essence they gutted magic in skyrim, no exageration.

there is less than 20 spell effects iv found (and that is counting different ways to cast the same spell [fire ball and exploading fire ball]), and then there is stronger versions of spells (which are all to weak compared to NPC mages)

edit: wanted to clarify that i do not count special staves like the wabberjack, and those are the effects iv foun, there may be more but i doubt it

Im not.
The whole reason they got to make Daggerfall was because of Arena.
And the one thing that makes Arena stand out above a million other dungeon crawlers is the sheer freedom and customisability of spellmaking.
Without it, there never would have been a Daggerfall.
And that means no Morrowind or Oblivion either.

The worst part of it is that what we got in place is so bland and useless.
I kid you not, Dragon Age one has a more varied and utalitarian spellsystem.

A bioware game has better magic than a TES game.

This has been my pet grievance since the day it was announced to be gone, because unlike a lot of people who marvelled at that they now look 'cool' and can be 'dualwielded', I saw this whole debacle coming a mile off.
Bethesda has never been good at making spells.
Case in point, no pre-made spell ever came close to what the spellmaker could do.
A further case in point: finger of the mountain.

the ice spike your using only does 50 damage with all the perks and duel casting (without critical hits, if they can do that), but iv heard people on the forum say that an ice spike killed thier character (which had 400 hp) in 1 hit

i did that in my head so it might not be 100% accurate but it is around 75 damage

Is there some way to enhance the spells you already have besides the perks? For more damage etc..

As in did they add something to replace spell making, like spell enhancement, or is it all in the perks?

So do a lot of games.
It really is terrible what they have done to magic.
Its just so.. bland now.

In fact, I dont even call it magic.
I consistently talk about Skyrims 'generic'.

I'm enjoying the magic system so far. I use pretty much anything I find or have, and it compliments the enchanted one handed mace I have pretty well. Just wish I could make my own spells :flame:

Sorry, but spellmaking is not the reason that the ES series is successful. People didn't go out to buy Morrowind and Oblivion so they could make spells.
