Where did all the Silt Striders go?

Post » Wed Dec 08, 2010 7:51 am

I loved the Silt Striders. The whale-like sound they made, though their weird appearance, they felt somewhat magical.
I used to imagine myself riding a silt strider, even trying to jump over them just to pretend. (I know, sad...)
Oblivion didn't have them, it made me sad because of the lack of unique cultural world content, it felt too familiar. (In the words of the Todd man)

I hope Skyrim will bring back some of the unique creatures MW had, I knew each and every creature from OB in other fantasy games and stories. Morrowind introduced creatures that gave me the feeling of "WTF" but still it made the world feel much more unique.
Although I already know that lots of the creatures in Skyrim are familiar, I still hope that they bring back some of the creatures that filled the world once (hopefully, 200 years to the future is not enough time to make them instinct).

NOTE: Please notice that this thread is not about "MW was more special than OB", it's about me missing Silt Striders and lots of other unique creatures from Morrowind, even though they were ugly like hell.

ANOTHER NOTE: I'm not suggesting making Silt Striders ridable, I just want to see them in the world. Just imagine... you travel across the land, then you hear a whale-like sound beyond the fog. You come close to the sound and then... BOO!! just kidding. And then... you see a Silt Strider walking around the river next to you...
Sounded better in my head... anyway, it's cool.

See them in the distant remains on Morrowind near the border, yeah, why not. They were very very cool creatures. First time when I got on the ship deck in Seyda Neen and heard that weird sound...man, that's a memory for a life. I expect Skyrim will be much much less alien in creatures than Morrowind though, it's another kind of setting. Our Skyrim Silt Striders will be the carriages lol. Silt Striders on wheels :D But there's still hope, they didn't say what animal is pulling the carriages, who knows...

They're native to Morrowind. They don't exist elsewhere. Skyrim will have creatures that other regions don't, but we won't see Silt Striders.

Silt Striders are cool, but I think they'd seem out of place in most of Skyrim. They seem like they wouldn't easily survive in many places outside of Morrwind and maybe Black Marsh, especially in mostly cold places like Skyrim.

I don't want Silt Striders back, or pretty much any of the creatures native to Morrowind. I want new Skyrim creatures.

Seeing how most of the "unique creatures" are consisted of insects in Morrowind, I doubt they would survive the climate of Skyrim...

I always loved the sound silt striders made as well. Hopefully Skyrim has something interesting in store for us, Oblivion's bestiary definitely was a little bland.

They will be in Skyrim i think.

When an underground based city is discovered by Stryder mounted Dunmer archers and attacked, the Striders will walk in and destroy the Magical shield generator. The Nords will send an army of guar-riding warriors with grappling hooks to tie their legs together and make them fall to the snow. one brave Nord warrior will use his grappling hook to climb up to the soft underbelly, slash it open and toss in a fire glyph spell, and cut the rope to fall to the ground as the stryder gets blown up and falls sideways to the snow.

A gruff Nord smuggler and a feisty breton princess will also have a romantic kiss in the south corridor. and make a getaway before Fyr walks in to a trumpet anthem.

it'll be epic.

Alright, so I understand Silt Striders won't be in, but what about unique creatures in general? I did not see one creature in Oblivion that was actually unique and unfamiliar.

What about the three-eyed gorilla-like trolls?
Or the giant lobster-like land-Dreughs?

To tell you the truth it didn't really feel special to me in any way :S Can't say the same about Shivering Isles though.

Or you could read what he said and realize that this is in the correct forum.

To the OP, I agree. I would very much like to see the return of alien creatures, it doesn't necessarily have to be the ones from Morrowind, just something different. I'm sick of the familiar, and the trolls, ogres, and skeletons are getting boring.

Though I do recall Todd saying recently that Skyrim is going to be a mixture of the alien atmosphere in Morrowind, and the familiar atmosphere in Oblivion, so I think we do have a lot to look forward to.

I really miss those huggable abominations. I really do. But I think they're more suitable for whatever TES installation that takes place in Black Marsh (hopefully the one directly after Skyrim)

I don't care. I'm glad we have an alternative to fast travel. A silt strider is just a picture, I rode a loading screen as my transportation.

Don't blame us for your lack of imagination, immersion is for those with enough IQ to turn a knob.

I expect Skyrim will have its fair share of unique and awesome creatures. The Ice Whisps (or whatever the'yre called) look incredible and the spiders just as amazing. Plus, I'm sure theres much more we dont know about yet

Not to mention the dragons.

nvm...i didnt know they were a travel option...
