Where did the choo-choo go?

Post » Fri Jan 29, 2010 7:57 am

One of those little lovely things about New Vegas: We are led to believe that the NCR has a bunch of trains, and the powder gangers were maintaining rail lines when they escaped. My question: where the censored are all the censored trains? Was it just something left out because of the developer's rush, an oversight, or could the engine not handle the load? (no pun intended) I think it'd be pretty cool to hitch a ride everywhere or even rob a train, but they either all have cloaking devices or do not exist. End rant.

I can think of two reasons:

1. They weren't done with the tracks yet, hence why they needed the inmates of NCRCF to do the work.

2. Game engine couldn't handle a train.

the trains only come into Vegas every two months, bringing fresh troops and supplies. Or something.

Try following the train tracks and see where they go :)

It's the Invisible Monorail Service, which can be found at Invisible Camp McCarran. Licensed by Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.

There is the Monorail and we do get to see it. There is a quest to stop it from being destroyed.

Also what gabriel said. The tracks were not done yet, hence the powder gangers. The war with the Legion/BoS and the prison break kinda derailed the NCR train expansion.

The two are so close together, you can just walk the distance. Would not matter much if it was destroyed. It brings in people from NCR.

Still I could be wrong on this. People talk about how troops come from NCR using the monorail.

NCR does make use of large caravan companies which would be one of the main ways the Mojave stays supplied. The trains themselves could end just outside of the Mojave and the troops have to go the rest of the way on foot.

Yes and no. It does matter if the Monorail Line is blown up, the Monorail is a 2 minute ride safely from McCarran Airport to the Las Vegas Boulevard Station. If NCR goes through Freeside, where alot of NCR resent is, there could be trouble, yes a trooper could kill a local who picks a fight, but if some other local is just strolling by to see that trooper kill the guy, they'll go around telling people that he saw an NCR guy mercilessly kill a local. So mainly for diplomacy, it's better NCR is kept out of Freeside, I mean hell, look what Dixon is doing to those two guys just because they are FROM NCR.

On an offnote, only NCR troops or NCR VIPs are allowed on it (IE The Courier with a Liked status with NCR)

The rails *were* clear and being used. You can talk to the bartender at Boulder CIty about it. The NCR was mining material at Quarry Junction, shipping it by rail to Boulder CIty where there is a concrete mixing plant, and then the finished concrete was being moved to work on fortifications along the river. Given the horrible state of the rails "today", presumably the Powder Gangers intentionally brought down landslides to block the rails during the course of their uprising. The engine itself was probably removed back to the NCR for safekeeping (functional rail locomotives probably being in short supply).

Powder Gangers were to have the same role in Black Isle's Fallout 3.

My impression was that the Powder Gangers sabotaged the Mojave rail lines (look south of Nipton & you'll see why new trains are not arriving) after their breakout. With Quarry Junction out of commission, there is no need to freight supplies to Boulder City.
There are several engines scattered around in the game that I assumed were functional but grounded because of the PG activities.
You could make a case for the PG being responsible for Caesar's decision to attack when he does.

Like everyone else said, they were suppose to be in Black Isles's Fallout 3 aka Van Buren.
