Where to get standalone expansions?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 5:18 am

I can't find an easy way to get Tribunal or Bloodmoon. I have the original Morrowind DVD, but some of the mods I'm getting require the expansions. The only place that has them is Steam, but they are bundled in the GOTY edition, which is redundant. IS there no place to buy them via download? No store is going to have the game, and I don't necessarily need to have the physical media enough to warrant trying to get it shipped to me.

I wouldn't mind buying and downloading the GOTY edition from Steam (10 bucks!), but I've read some bad things about how the mods behave with the Steam version. Are these rumors true? How do mods work with the Steam version?

The standalone expansions are pretty rare, definitely more expensive than picking up a GOTY copy from either a retail store somewhere or from steam.

There are two issues with mods on Steam: If you use the Morrowind Graphics Extender mod, it won't work with the steam overlay window. The whole screen gets messed up when that overlay is active. But you can choose to disable the steam overlay for Morrowind specifically and then all is fine, not a problem. There are also some files that need to be redated in order for other graphics mods (texture replacers) to work, but nowadays the http://morrowind.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=19510 can easily do that for you.

Other than that, there are no issues or difficulties with modding the Steam version. Except maybe that the directory is somewhat hard to find if you're not used to Steam (it's under steam/steamapps/common/Morrowind) but that's what shortcuts are for.

So Steam's a good option, especially with the current discount.

Sweet. I'm going to get the GOTY Edition from Steam, then. Thanks for the info.

Mods will work perfectly with the Steam version but it doesn't include the Construction Set to make mods or modify existing ones. The CS that you already have may not work with the GOTY edition because I think that it has to be updated to the latest Bloodmoon level which, of course, yours won't be. I'm not sure if there is a way to update it.

If i'm not mistaken, Steam DOES include the contruction set, it's just buried in one of Steam's option menus. I'll check my copy to be sure. Having the game on Steam is a godsend as far as ease of installation.

UPDATE: Did some searching, and I do believe I am wrong. I can't seem to find the CS in Steam. I may be getting it confused with the other Bethesda games on Steam.

... if the GOTY version doesn't include the CS, and the CS from the non-GOTY version won't work to mod the GOTY version, then how the hell did anyone ever manage to mod Bloodmoon and Tribunal? Pardon my stupid, I haven't had my coffee yet.

Because when you install Bloodmoon, the CS gets updated. It's only the Steam version that doesn't include the CS.
If you already have a CD copy of MW with Bloodmoon (GOTY or not) then your CS will work with the Steam copy but if you have a non-expansion copy, it won't.

Umm???, we bought the disk version or had already bought MW and the two expansion sets? In my case, I bought MW and later wanted to run some mods that required either Trib and/or Bloodmoon, so after putting it off for a long time, I bought the GOTY edition disk, which includes the CS.

The problem is that the Steam version of Morrowind GOTY does not include the CS. This is why there is confusion here.

And fragonard is right: patch 1.6.1820 patched the CS.

There was no confusion. Fragonard had already pointed out that the Steam edition does not include the CS. The disk version of GOTY does. The disk version incorporated the most up to date patch (1.6.1820). The Steam edition also includes patch 1.6.1820.

Bethesda Softworks site includes http://www.gamesas.com/eng/patches.php of patches to Morrowind, Tribunal and Bloodmoon. AFAICT, those are available for download for free. I'm not saying whether it will work nor what caveats one should be ware.

How do I disable the Steam overlay?
In your library, right click on MW, select properties, general and uncheck the steam community option.

http://morrowind.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=29388

edit : To answer the OP,the best place to get the expansions seperately is on ebay i would expect to pay around £5 -£6 each although i saw both expansions + Morrowind in a bundle which went for around £ 8 inc P & P last week, a second hand copy of GOTY can often be acquired for anything between £3 and £5 by contrast.
