Where is my Mind?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:36 am

I don't know how in Azure's name you would implement a comprehensive thought system in Skyrim, and maybe this is more a philosophical point but aren't we the omnipotent controller's of are characters or do we simply move there bodies and kill things? Surely your character has thoughts that you should hear, maybe through a headphones, or a better diary? so, what are your thoughts on thoughts? (please refrain from flaming, which includes writing a pseudo intellectual statement with a smiley face the end instead of a full stop, cheers) (And yes I am aware that this whole topic is pretty pseudo intellectual anyway).

And however stupid/implausible you think this may be, surely it beats discussing the possible future of M'aiq for the eighth time.

No,the person you control is just code,at at most, pixels,he has no thoughts,no ethics,it's down to the person playing.

And there's nowt wrong with an amusing convo about M'aiq.IMO.

Not really, you move him around, but you aren't his thoughts, if they exist separately and whether they should be expressed is really the point of this topic.

Also, seeing as thoughts are cells firing in the brain, acessing memorys and involves reason and etc, none of which can exist in a game.

It's TES. You decide everything about your character, from their history to their thoughts.

well its a roleplaying game you roleplay as him thus becoming him and choosing everything he does, it is a code and you control the code and you use your thoughts to chose what you do with the code, it cannot think like us nor would i want it to because then i would need to play like he thinks...thus defeating the reason to play a RPG

Yes, on a level that's complete detached from the game you can make up background and thoughts but I'm talking about it being expressed in-game.

The instant we can get computer AI to have it's own thoughts it will certainly promptly decide to destroy us.

If the title is a reference to the Pixies song... I like it.

On topic, it's up to you to choose your own characters thoughts. Not Bethesda. Use your imagination.

Why would we want to hear what we are thinking through headphones? We're thinking it. If our character wasn't ours, this would be a JRPG.

The character is meant to be "you" in a sense. See whenever, say, you decide to accompany a merchant you just saved to the nearest town? The in-story explanation is that that's part of who your character is. You thought: "That merchant won't make it on his/her own. I'll protect him/her." and that is, in a story sense, your character's thoughts.

This would require a different set of thoughts based on how you play, and would require that the devs spend a lot of time on making it a good feature. Otherwise it could end up somewhat like Oblivion's random conversations and I'm saying that as someone who has heard the "hello", "goodbye" conversation.

So to answer your initial question: with great difficulty and a lot of fans whining if the devs get it wrong.

Not really, the headphones idea was more a delivery method for the charters thoughts on his actions.

It doesnt really relate, but a cool feature in Divinity II was that you could read peoples minds. I'd like that as a spell in Skyrim, under Illusion.

I disagree.

We need to discuss this 14 more times before we proceed to a new topic.

You control your character, or rather, you ARE your character. Your characters mind, is your mind, your characters thoughts, are your thoughts. That's why I think your character shouldn't have independent thoughts.

Yea I think that it really wouldn't make sense in this game to have the character you play have thoughts separate from your own because you ARE the character you are playing. He would not exist if it were not for you, so he can not exist outside of you.

Agreed. I never actually said anything about your character being a separate entity to you, but I was asking for suggestions on how your character may express his/yours thoughts in the game, other than his actions.
