Where do other races go when they die?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 4:13 am

I can't seem to find any books or anything on wikis regarding where other races go when they die.

Obviously Nords go to Soverngarde. Im mostly wondering where Imperials go but curious as to all the other races as well.

You don't have it quite right to start with even. Not all Nords go to Sovngarde, and it's a common misconception that only Nords can get into Sovngarde.

Here's how death is handled in the Elder Scrolls universe:
  • If you are a werewolf, you get taken to Hircine's Hunting Grounds.
  • If your allegiance lies with a Daedric Prince, your soul goes to their realm.
  • If you are a True Nord at heart* and die with courage and valor, you go to Sovngarde.
  • If you are otherwise unaffiliated, or aligned with the Nine Divine, then your soul goes to the Dreamsleeve, where it is wiped clean and recycled back into Mundus.**
* Being a "True Nord at heart" does not necessarily mean you have to be a Nord, merely that you care about Skyrim and it's Nordic ways.
** Argonians are the exception here. They go back to the Hist to be recycled.

Thank you but I must ask if you're sure about Sovngarde when you visit it in skyrim all of the people there are Nordic.

Probably because a ) They're not going to show you everyone in Sovngarde and b ) the majority of people who are devoted to Skyrim and the Nordic culture who die in battle are Nords.

Exactly this. I mean, how often is someone really devoted to Skyrim and the way of the Nords above everything else, yet isn't a Nord themselves? AND also dies in battle with a weapon in their hand and courage in their heart? It's a very rare and exceptional event.

Do bear in mind that the idea of the Dreamsleeve has only explicitly existed in lore for two games. When it was introduced, some players proposed that Sovngarde was just an illusory afterlife which some Nords feel as they get wiped clean. TES V says otherwise. We may well see other afterlives associated with other cultures in future games and books if they get published. Imperials might even turn out to be partially right about going to Aetherius when they die, but people in Tamriel have different ideas about cosmology to players. Elves think that people exist in their world after they die before moving on, but they don't distinguish between Mundus and Oblivion (and Aetherius) as much as Men do.

I'm well aware of the recycling, I believe Jauffre mentions it in Oblivion if your comrade Baurus dies in battle.(not really a spoiler if you haven't played Oblivion, it's not a scripted death so don't worry.) Although in Baurus' case, I could see him going to Sovngarde.

Although I can't see much purpose in the 9 Divines if you only get recycled. I could see why people would align themselves to a Prince, or even get desperate like Malyn Varen and try to create your own universe.

Praising a daedra is more like a contract. Praising the divines is more like a thankyou note, since they made and are the whole world.

a Good question I cannot answer :o

It makes me wonder where Khajiit would actually go, with their whole religion on the Twin moons and such yet never mentioning an afterlife is a bit odd, I certainly wouldn't like the Idea of being recycled :|
The most i'd like would be to have some kind of nice afterlife and have a choice to be born again on Nirn if you wanted to.

Those who worshipped the Divines and other gods who have realms in Aetherius goto Aetherius, those who serve the Daedra goto that Daedra's realm i.e. a servant of Azura goes to her realm and a servant of Sheogorath ((or anyone that can be deemed insane)) goes to the shivering isles and etc etc.

As for sithis well...they all goto the void for eternity.

Actually, Argonians are only reborn via the Hist if they die within Black Marsh. If they die in other Provinces, then they will go to whatever realm that are connected with, like Hircine's Hunting grounds if they are a Lycan.
