Where should TES5 take place?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:10 am

Odds are, it's going to be Skyrim, whether we like it or not (I personally don't; Solstheim was enough of that for me).

Whatever the setting, I just hope that Bethesda doesn't do a shrunken and gutted version of it like they did to Cyrodiil in OB. The earlier TES games had politics, Guild rivalries, and deep and expansive conversations and detailed books about the culture, history, and mythology of the region. Oblivion had a few short pamphlets in comparison, two-line "conversations", and total lack of "interaction" between the various political factions (there WEREN'T any political factions, not even an actual Elder Council) and Guilds. Given what was done to Cyrodiil's terrain, Skyrim could end up being a desert in TES V......

I like the idea of Hammerfell or Valenwood, I like predominant Elf or Human culture, but have some sense of the real world (seasons, which Skyrim would lack). Share your thoughts...

to be honest i would rather have the whole game in Summerset Isle. But if they go with skyrim, which looks to be the case, then i would like to see Summerset Isle done as a large expansion pack. Like they did for the shivering isles.

I still want the game's setting to be in Morrowind (mainland). :(

Well, there have been several polls to that effect, but once it was "tentatively suggested" that Skyrim would be the next setting, just about every "really devoted fan" jumped in, screaming "Skyrim, Skyrim!!!". On top of that, there are going to be two strongly opposed camps: one of them the FPS action-game fans who would favor a hack-and-slash Nord-centered game with heavy reliance on player skills and none of that distracting "political nonsense"; the RPG camp, on the other hand, would prefer a character-centered game with more intricate and branched storyline featuring a host of decisions with major consequences. At this point, I don't believe you would get a truly meaningful result from any poll taken on the subject.

Skyrim plus? I figure, if it's technicaly "Skyrim," and the game really does take place 200 years after Oblivion, well, it may have expanded. So it would include that and some High Rock, maybe some Hammerfell...

Actually I wanted something to do with House Dres and the other Houses. Not to start another OB vs MW argument, but I simply liked MW's storyline/setting much better.

If you're playing on PC, the Tamriel Rebuilt project has already gotten about 1/3 of the way through the Morrowind mainland. By the time Bethesda could release a Morrowind sequel, the area would probably be just about finished by the TR team anyway. The quality of the work so far is actually comparable to that of the original game areas, if not better in some respects, without affecting the existing game. Granted, technology has improved, but Bethesda would need to make a pretty good game just to compete with the spinoff from its own earlier release.

With a host of other provinces still unvisited, I'd much prefer that Bethesda tackled a fresh one than revisit some place we've seen before. That's actually one of the reasons AGAINST wanting to see Skyrim: between the island of Solstheim in the Bloodmoon expansion for Morrowind and the Jerall Mountains in Oblivion, we've gotten at least a taste of parts of it, whereas Black Marsh, the Summerset Isles, Valenwood, and Elsweyr are still untouched and "mysterious".

My biggest issue with Skyrim is that it's another very "human" terrain. People complained about Oblivion not being "alien enough" like Morrowind, yet they support Skyrim, which I don't understand. And as Kovacius said, we already have Solstheim and the Jerall Mountains. The Skyrim setting seems too premature, especially considering Bloodmoon.

And I honestly don't think having political conflict is enough to support the Skyrim setting, either. I want a game that focuses on more than just the politics. My biggest hopes for Skyrim is that it will touch more on the origins of man (Atmora, the Nedes, so on and so forth), the Kalpas, Shor, and all that metaphysical goodness. I just hope those details aren't entirely overlooked in favor of politics. But seeing the two brought together in the main plot and the setting could be very interesting.

I'm not sure I look forward to the idea of werecreatures, personally. I don't see what the big deal about them is. And the only reason there were werewolves in Solstheim for the expansion was because of the Bloodmoon and all that business with Hircine. Didn't some developer or whoever say at some point that if there were to be werewolves in Oblivion it would be contradictory to the lore?

Unless they actually do something incredibly interesting with werecreatures, I'd rather not see them. Adding them for the sake of being able to become them is stupid.

You don't know anything about the Skyrim culture, do you? It's very interesting.

Also, yeah... we have Jerall Mountains. What's your point?

I want it so badly in Skyrim! I could type forever explaining how I'd love Skyrim! In TES games I've always loved the snowy sections of the land. I especially loved Raven Rock.

Why so many people want to go to the land of snow and illiterate vikings... I'll never understand. I'm all about Summerset or Valenwood.

To answer the "why" and cure yourself of those misconceptions, perhaps you should visit the link advertised in either of the two posts above yours.

EDIT: Oh, and I must add, to you, LN.

It's because Bethesda has already trademarked "Skyrim" for an unknown purpose.

Now I know that Skyrim is the expected champion here, but what is it that has led most people to believe it will be the next installment? I knew the answer to this once. However, with all the information out there, I forgot somewhere. Also, the Summerset Isles would be just as interesting as Skyrim, wouldn't it?

As others stated, Skyrim was Trademarked by Bethesda. They did the same thing before Oblivion.

I would like to see two Provinces in TES5 because Cyrodiil is the largest of all provinces and wasn't big enough in my opinion, so for me it would have to be Highrock and Hammerfell or Highrock and Skyrim. The continent of Akivir would be an interesting change although it may be a bit too different from Tamriel for some folks.

Akavir or Skyrim. But has more chance to be in Skyrim, because I think that Bethesda will show all Tamriel first, and then introduce other continents.
