Where's the bottleneck?

Hi folks,

I'm wondering how I can tell where my Oblivion framerate bottleneck is. I usually cannot get FPS as high as 30, and outdoors is usually in the 10-12 range... yuck!

I'm running a fairly mod-heavy game in 1920x1080 on my widescreen. Large textures of course, HDR, and I've got most of the video sliders high/maxed as well as most of the video-related ini settings. I had tweaked some of the settings for AA and such in the nVidia control panel, but now I've got it at the defaults.

My system is:
Core i7 920 @2.66GHz
6GB ram (yes, using the LAA patch on Oblivion)
2x nVidia GeForce GXT260 running in SLI
Win 7 Pro 64-bit
DirectX 11

I'm pretty good about keeping drivers and stuff up to date. I've also gone through and disabled startup of obnoxious processes and such. Sometimes I use GameBooster with Oblivion, but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

I also have a second monitor connected and I wonder if there's a way to have it automatically disabled when Oblivion starts?

So I guess what I need to know is: will getting a newer video card help considerably, or is the game getting CPU-bound and I'm stuck with it for now? And if the former, what should I get? Would it be better to splash on a single really high-end card - one of the latest and greatest - or should I go just a few steps higher than my current GTX260 and get two and SLI them? Where would I get the most bang for my limited bucks?

I don't think that Oblivion ever ran nicely with any SLI options.

Well, have you tried disabling one of the cards then?
