Where's the marketing?

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 9:59 am

Sadly yes.

What truly haunts me is that the game could have easily achieved its title as a "masterpiece". I thought the game was excellent in terms of gameplay (which is seemingly where its score comes from), but where it was lacking in narrative isn't a fault of Kojima, but rather Konami. There is no excuse for cutting such important story content and missions. I feel like an entire third of the game is missing! Furthermore, the issues with their servers caused a great deal of grief. It wasn't until two or three weeks later that I was able to upload my GZ save data (only to find the staff to be mediocre).

Actually, id say even if they advertised this as just fallout 3 v.2 (New Vegas..) a large portion of the fanbase and newcomers would buy it still due to the sheer fandom of bethesdas RP's and the fallout series.

I mean, id say they've played it pretty well;
- kept it undercovers while supposed leaks and hoaxes get the fanbase crazed for a new release (which, lets face it.. There was alot)
- announce it subtly, with a 24 hour timer hinting at it (notice how fast that spread.. People would check all the time for fallout news)
- tell people the main new features and tease gameplay at a massive games event, making sure everyone assumed they would announce something big aswell
- bring out their version of trailers; a video series explaining the revamped skill/special set to keep the craze gently floating along

- release the game

This game is getting a lot of marketing but not on tv.

Just go to Youtube and search for Fallout 4. Look at how many views each video has.

This is the age we live in now. Lots of people now hear about things through the internet instead of television. Especially young people.

Actually, there were articles 10-15 years ago stating that gaming had surpassed the film industry as far as revenue is concerned. Obviously this is aggregate, not individual, products.

OP, keep in mind that cable is dying a slow death. Streaming via cord cutting is the norm, not the exception, so there's really very little reason for a company to pay huge $$$ for TV advertising. Online advertising, sure, but not TV (or radio, for that matter).

Can't say I miss stats when playing Skyrim. The perks system is far more robust and dynamic than stats ever were. Bethesda made the right call there.

The Wanderer trailer has been up for 16 hours and it has almost 1 million views. I guess that's pretty decent.

The Wanderer Trailer made page 2 of Reddit and it's been plastered all over other social media streams. Bethesda knows what they're doing. They'll make a television marketing push in the final week before its release to target those who've been living under a rock. Any sooner and it's a wasted effort as the cost/benefit doesn't make sense.

That live action trailer was sick. Also kinda made me think of the youtube mini series called Nuka Break that wayside creations made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iq8swQ7kpg a link to their first episode if you've never seen it. I'ts worth a watch ;)

Keep in mind, I did include web advertising in my original post. I haven't really seen it there either. As for cable, I think you're overplaying its demise quite a bit, or rather, understating how slow of a death it's having:

http://www.businessinsider.com/decline-of-us-tv-subscribers-2015-4

Cable cutters only make up about 20% of households in America, and the projected growth is only about 3% (cumulative, not relative) over the next 2 years. Streaming via cord cutting is far, far from the norm. Even other articles I read that were more..."optimistic" about cord cutting only project 38% cord cutting in 2017, which still doesn't make it the norm. Your statement, no offense, isn't factually correct.

Either way though, seems like a moot point at this point since a Bethesda staffer dropped by and said there will be ads on TV very soon.

Umm, you must be new.

Hi, and welcome to earth, it must have been scary under that rock of yours, your whole life.

Anyways, when it comes to advertisemants devlopers and producers dont always use in game footage because they do not want to spoil any plot or features before a certain time.

Sorry if every advertisemant for every game is not from ingame recordings, its just kinda too boring that way, thats just how advertising works. and how its been since the beginning of advertisemants. :)

Hope this helped ease you into the world of reality. If you want to know more feel free to ask ;)

Yes commenting saying I laugh at this werid system of advertising without using the product shows I've livied under a rock, most adverts do show case the product. Films, TV shows, music, food, cars and so on. Seems only a handful of games do it and childrens toys or things that don't have much of a physical product such as insurance. It makes me laugh because Fallout 4 looks great, why not use it to show it off?

So far there's already been multiple videos show casing the features and the game, the video it's self show cases a few of them already however I fail to see how they couldn't of recorded the exact same thing in game. Unless there's plot every where and and special features popping up every step it's not going to be spoiled that way, as we've already seen with other videos they can avoid the plot.

Not that I didn't like the vid it was great quality and nice to see but just always strikes as a strange way to advertise it and cost more money and take longer to do.

They'll do both. It's incredibly common for AAA games to have both live action and gameplay commercials leading up to the launch. Just check out the BL2 commercials...I'm sre Assassin's Creed does it too. Actually, you can even go all the way back to the commercials for the original Smash Brothers game. Although, that commercial did have some gameplay footage IIRC.

Nothing here either, not sure if it needs it though, Skyrim got a lot of attention, so this game might market itself more or less.

Some game stores and websites will probably get ads and stuff before release I bet.

Ads are easy to find when you go to places that the gamer demographic goes to. No point in putting up tv spots for the wrong demographic. Marketing 101.

Good to see that Bethesda recognizes the value of marketing to different demographics on different media platforms.

Because...

That's why^ Real Marketing 101 teaches you to identify all of your potential target audiences and reach them in a way that is incorporated into their lifestyles after you do a value assessment of what marketing reaches them and most efficiently. I've taken marketing classes; it's also what I do for a living.

To the OP

There has been advertisemants on tv.

E3 panel was their biggest advertisemant. Bethesda let social media do the rest.

They are relying on customer retention via the previous fallout games.

Upon release, steam will have a big advertisemant on their page like with most triple a titles

This isn't their first rodeo. Their marketing is just fine.

Yeah...I'd say putting a commercial on Sunday Night NFL game is putting some money into the Marketing effort...

On the issue of not using the actual product to sell the product.....have you SEEN a fast food commercial in the last 20 years? I've certainly never gotten a fast food sandwich that looks anything like what they show in the commercials. Today's Marketing is not doing their job if they aren't deceptive in some way. It's sad, but true.
