Where's the racism?

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 7:17 pm

Racism is an integral part of any "gritty" fantasy world. It doesn't have to be as hardcoe, as, say, the Witcherverse version, but it certainly makes things interesting. We know that, lorewise, Dunmer and Nords don't exactly invite one another to holiday parties. And the Altmer, last time I checked, went from being "just about on the way out" to "conquering bastards who almost won it all."

Yet a Jarl employs a Dunmer as a bodyguard. Nevermind that; here is my Dunmer character, suddenly discovering the power to Shout - and nobody even raises an eyebrow. All those guards that witnessed me let loose my first FUS should've felt at the very least slighted - a mer, and a DUNMER at that, usurping a power that is as intimate to a Nord as his soul! Nobody ever comments on the fact that a Dunmer meddles in Nordic affairs, Altmer shopkeepers happily peddle their wares, and only the Khajiit get the stink-eye because they are all thieves and skooma dealers. Which is refreshing in the suddenly-PC world of Elder Scrolls...

I was disappointed as an Argonian, that I didn't get verbally slammed into the floor the moment I entered Windhelm.

Because not everyones a racists but nearly all stormcloaks are.

The housecarl of the Jarl of Whiterun probably proved herself to him. That and he didnt seem to care much about race. The Guards are probably more stunned that they met the dragonborn.

My Altmer pronounces Jarl 'Jar-el'. That is what he thinks of Nords.

I've seen plenty of racism. Not so much towards me, but between NPC's, or from what NPC's tell me.

Well the Housecarl of Whiterun has it story, the Jarl and Irileth were once great friends or some sort. That's why she's Housecarl.

if you actually talk to the houscarl of Whiterun she tells you she and the Jarl are ex adventure buddies, so she got by being a long time friend and life saver. Also ya really think they could shape the dialogue around every race you can play? I dont even think Morrowind manage to make a fuzz of what race you where.

also if you want a good taste of flat out racism, head to windhelm, some really tense stuff between the dunmer and the nords there.

The jarl of whiterun Nd his bodyguard fought together in the great war I believe. Other than that, I'd like some more tension as well.

The entire Stormcloak rebellion is based on around Racism. Not too mention the condition the Dunmer refugees of Windhelm (?) live in.

After helping a Nord out today and saving his family's tomb from a necromancer all he had to say to me was "What do you want, elf?" in a very rude tone. I see racism quite a bit but it isn't as blatant as some people might think. Also in Windhelm Dunmer are constantly harrassed and being called spies.

right when you go in windhelm they ridicule the dunmer or "gray-skins" and force them to live in the equivalent of a ghetto.
They don't let khajit in their town
The high elves are hated by everyone because of the thalmor.

My friend says he gets attacked by random people all the time just for being a Kajhiit. Seems pretty racist to me.

I think this answers your topic.
About the high elfs i think that is the worse, i have yet to met a high elf that he isn't being talked like an enemy by someone.

The NPC to NPC racism is great, but any racism towards your character is almost non-existent.

In combat, people say that my orc has "no place in this world" or something like that.

I've been reminded I should get back to my forest (playing Bosmer). And all other Bosmeri I find seem to over enjoyed to find another Bosmer to speak to. But mostly as said above the Stormcloaks seem like a fascist bunch of pricks. There is plenty of subtle racism in the game but it lacks the general hostility of Morrowind.

Still, it gives a feeling of disconnect from the gameworld, as if my character is not really a part of it.
