Where would you like to start off the game ?

Post » Thu Aug 19, 2010 3:26 am

Okay, my first thread!

I guess in a way this stems into the thinking of the introduction/opening scene of the game and where one would like to start off, either going straight into the social aspect in the cities or towns, or exploring the wilderness of Skyrim. Personally, I think the underground city would be a good start, like that of the snow elves or the opening of the road to nowhere. Although likewise, up on the mountain side would be just as good

However, talking of opening scenes, in :obliviongate: it was rather more of a dramatic opening than that of Morrowind. So im guessing that in fact Skyrim will follow the dramatic opening and therefore put you straight into the storyline. What can you envisage the opening scene being like ?
May I direct you over to Cauthon's original posting who went into a little more detail than I on the issue http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=search&fromMainBar=1

starting on the shore in a small settlement, and right from the "tutorial" to the tavern, and putting in extensive research on if you can get drunk in tesV

Well its confirmed that were starting in prison again, but after were our I think it would be cool to start on an empty road to nowhere. Because really, it leads nowhere and anywhere, which is the whole point of the game when it comes to how you make your character.

I was going to say prison... but was beaten to the punch.

I assume you mean after the nasty escaping business is taken care of; preferably out on my own, with nothing but the clothes on my back, a couple pieces of lint, and possibly a sharp stick. No map or compass... yet... I'll tape cloth onto my monitor if I have to!

But to be honest, my starting points are likely to change from character to character. So... anything works, really.

Hopefully we start on one side of the map, maybe near Riften or Solitude? I think starting at the bottom corner of the map made Morrowind feel a little bigger, since the first time you looked at the world map you saw that you had the enormity of Vvardenfell in front of you. Oblivion just plopped you in the center of the map, next to the biggest city, no less. I think we should have to play the game at least a little bit before we're able to get to one of the major cities. (Fallout 3 is pretty good with this.)

I clicked on Eslewhere since I don't really have a clue or thought about it. I just want to play the game. I think if I think to much about it, I can be disapointed so I will be happy where ever I start. Doesn't matter where I start since you can go where ever you want, so I don't think it will make a difference.

Just Curious, do you mean Elsewyere, or Elswyr the Home province for the Khjit? :P

Aye, yes. Its quite open ended. I know the whole prison concept, but I not only wanted to gain views from those who thought about how the scene should emerge after the prison escape but also (for those who dont like the prison concept) how it would start off without the prision idea at all.

Well you can be a prisoner without being in a prison.... just look at Morrowind. Personally I would like to have a more open ended beginning of prison, escape, and then exploration; far more so, at least, then Oblivion. That tutorial dungeon really, really got old. It would be nice if the Radiant Story changed up the location of your imprisonment a little every time. Not too drastic, but if I have to start out in a dungeon... I don't want to do the same one every time I want to start a new character.

What I think would be cool would be something more than being stuck in a cell I have to escape from. Perhaps when you are captured you start off with your execution, but instead of just having some burly, hairy guy cut your head off, your captors chain you to an ice flow and push you out to sea. And you have to escape this chain and slip into the water and to the coast without being eaten by some vicious sea dragon. Or you are put in a Gibbet in the Fall Forest, and some passerby can help you out (mentor character most likely). Just something out of the ordinary. That is what I would like.

I would like to be waiting in a prison in some kind of small town awaiting execution and then right when they come to get you for the show a dragon interrupts and starts attacking the town. In all the confusion, you manage to get free and try to run but then the dragon cuts off your escape root and calls you Dovahkiin. The Dragon quickly tries to dispose of you but you act quickly with a dragon shout that you didn't know about until that moment.

Spoiler
Well since we're supposedly slated for an execution for crimes unknown and since Esbern is rumoured to be our saviour from such a demise, I would guess that the game will begin with our character being marched through some public courtyard or square somewhere, on our way to the chopping block (I could be completely wrong though...executions may be a private matter, carried out in the prison). To take this further, I would imagine the execution would be taking place in either Windhelm or Whiterun, with the latter being the most likely location, since it is the central city on the map and since it was heralded long ago as the Imperial City of Skyrim...not to mention its relatively close proximity to High Hrothgar, which is where I envision the first or second stage of the main quest leading us as we fulfill our destiny and realize that we are Dovahkiin.

As far as where I would like to start...well I think that what I wrote in the spoiler is as good a place as any.

I don't care much where the game begins, as long as it doesn't take long to get past the character creation and into the open world. The prison/sewer dungeon in Oblivion got old really fast.

One of the best mods for tes4 IMO was the Alternate Start mod: http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11495
