Where do your character's names come from?

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 8:59 am

Just curious as to how you name your characters. Do you borrow names from games, books, films etc? Or do you come up with something by yourself? If the latter, how did you come up with the name?

I have two characters myself. My Breton's name is Enoniyon el-Vanwa, which i took from tolkien's Elvish language, although changed it up quite a bit. Enoniyon comes from Ononion, which is the Elvish version of my real first name. El comes from Elen which means Star, and Vanwa means Lost. The surname as i meant it translates as Lost Star.

The website i used for this is here,
http://www.arwen-undomiel.com/elvish/boynames.html

http://www.arwen-undomiel.com/elvish/eng_to_elv.html

My other character i created recently is a Dunmer. I named him Vvarvind Andrethi, with the surname being a reasonably common surname in Morrowind, and the idea for Vvarvind comes from the name of the Dunmer island of Vvardenfell, as you may have already guessed.

Lets here about your character names.

I tend to get my names out of Lord of the rings(in back of book list of people and names). How many people give their character a first name and a last name?

Augustus Caesar.
Imperial.

Because Imperials are pretty much the Romans, and Augustus Caesar was the Romans' greatest Emperor, apparently...

Tamriel rebuild has a name generator that I sometimes use. However, more often than not I come up with my own names that sound a bit like other NPCs from either oblivion or skyrim.

I have no idea why but when I did the free trial of wow back in the day I named my mage Duranduran for no reason whatsoever. Then when I bought the game afterwards I didn't want people thinking I was a fan of the band (which I'm not) so I just changed it to Buran - sixy Wizard. Although I had to tell people the sixy Wizard part of course.

My character names are always simple. Not good at inventing long names, like Elven stuff.

Korr was something I thought up when playing a Tauran in wow.. Just seemed to fit here, for a barbarian savage type.

My latest character is Eirik..which is just the old norse form of Erik. Kind of going for a more traditional Nordic hero. It means "eternal ruler". Perhaps he'll be high king. Not Ulfric.

Auran is a breton spellsword. Sounds like Aura. And Auron from FF10. I used it in Oblivion for the same type of character.

My characters name (Tasendia Renolsin) is an anagram of a Star Wars characters name. (Not one from the films)

I created it a while ago when I wrote a Star Wars short story and I have used it as well for computer games characters since.

If I can't come up with something fitting, I will take a two or three word phrase yhat best describes their personality and translate it into another language. That is usually Latin or Italian.

I had an Imperial in Oblivion named Artorius Castus, inspired by the King Arthur movie, and that's his Roman name.

With Skyrim, I couldn't come up with anything, and so I went with Kaidan. The name is from Mass Effect, and I also named one of my Dragon Age characters Kaidan, as well. The name just stuck. When I like a name, I keep using it.

Usually, when naming rpg characters, I pick something from another rpg or movie that either seems to fit the character or if I just like the name.

I name my character the type of character I'm playing. So if I play a paladin his name is Paladin, an assassin is named Assassin, etc.

Oddly, I think Italian somehow works better for ALTMER names than Imperial.

I mean, some of the elves in the game sound like have Italian names. Calcelmo, Ancano, etc..

For me, it's a personal thing. I named them after my kids. Not exactly the names of my kids but either nick names of them, or put thier names backwards.

if im basing my rp on someone else then i might give them that name (like if i make a rand al'thor character it will be given that name, probably) but if it is not based on something else i will come up with my own name (my main is black-birds-cry [the second, i deleted the first by mistake :teehee: ] i used that name because, well, it soudned awsome and fit an argonian)

Very good, I like that.

I named my daughter after one of my computer game characters.

Y'know, whenever I'm looking for a larger pool of names, I go to those fantasy miniatures type of online stores, and find something. Whoever comes up with the names for those is really creative. And there are hundreds of them, to get your mind brainstorming. It's better than using a random generator at least.

Mine are all from a Game of Thrones (the best fiction... ever written. I said it.)

My chaotic good healing sword 'n board Cleric was named Thoros, (Thoros of Myr, the red priest)

My true neutral smuggler (stealth archer) was named Davos, after Davos Seaworth (the smuggler also known as the Onion Knight)

My newest character, a neutral evil combat Necromancer is named Qyburn (the ex-Maester Qyburn who was very creepy, and very evil)

I have started 4 characters so far (restartitis victim?). 2 Bosmer, 1 Redguard, 1 Nord -

Rikard - Nord - A play on my own given name that I thought sounded Nordic.
Tars Tarkas - Redguard - Name taken from literature that I thought sounded cool. The literature was Edgar Rice Burroughs novel Princess of Mars.
Arandar - Bosmer - Made up name that I thought sounded Bosmeri.
Bowen Arreaux - Bosmer - This is a name that I have used in Morrowind, Oblivion, and now Skyrim. It was for Dunmer characters in the previous two. All were archers, hence the play on words.

My character's first name was basically just pulled out of the air. Her last name is the same as my main Oblivion character, who happens to be her great, great grandfather.

I made it up myself after reading a bit about khajiiti lore :D that the name has been used for a NPC in Skyrim is funny though. I've used it since Morrowind I think, haha

I give my Nords scandinavian or Saxon names (my most recent dragonborn had a Saxon one). My Imperials get Roman names obviously, with Altmers having quenya based and Bosmers Sindarin based names. For the elves I also frequently use the tamriel rebuilt generator.

I use the same name for all my named charcters in games.

B Dub.
B is the first letter of my first name
Dub is an abbreviated W for my last name.
