... A buddy of mine turned me on to a house in the Minefield. The particular house I am referring to (as there are about 4) is the one with a bloody handprint on the front door (if you fast travel to Minefield you'll be dropped right next to it when you appear). Each house in Minefield has a safe somewhere in it, this particular house's safe is positioned in the master bedroom behind a bookshelf. I use this to store all my equipment (what better protection than a safe?) and once you move the skeletons out of the bed you've got a nice place to sleep. Not to mention the added protection of having your home, and all your valuable possesions surrounded by a Minefield...
I've never had any items dissappear from this location and I've played through Fallout about 4 times now using this house.

You do understand that if you store your extra stuff in a safe, a locker, box, first aid kid, a trash can, or on the ground, it's all just as secure, don't you? Well, I'm not sure about the "on the ground" part, but otherwise I believe there are no NPCs roaming around examining the contents of containers.
Admittedly it is handy to put your stuff in something so you don't have to pick each thing up every time.
And in any case, once a safe has been unlocked, there is no way to re-lock it anyway. So it's an unlocked safe for all intents and purposes.
Well, my first "home" was the Super-Duper Mart. It had a place to sleep and places to store stuff. It worked for me.
Then I used the house belonging to what-his-name, the kid I rescued from the vampires. It had a closet and a bed. But I got tired of his "I knew you'd come back" dialog.
Eventually I acquired the Megaton house. That's nice. You can fix it up. spread your stuff out, and it's relatively cheery. The problem is that, with my laggy computer, getting there is often tricky.
I use the robot factory that the robot guy gave me because it has a workbench. That I use only to store stuff I might want to make weapons out of.
I think of the guest suite in the 2-Penny Tower as mine, although I didn't figure out how to acutally have it given to me. I just go through Twopenny's suite and around the outside to get there. It's clean and well-kept.
I rented a room in the Rustbucket once, but when I found out your rent (100 caps or so) is only good for one night, I gave that up. I mean I have a lot of caps, but even so paying by the night is not going to cut it.
Of course at the Point, the motel room is the place to stay.
Criteria for a place, it seems to me, would include
- a bed
- ease of access
- a workbench
- ability to have it decorated (only Megaton House and TwoPenny Tower have that)
- ambiance: I'm sorry, but I still don't care to share a bed with a skeleton
