Which companion is better (early game)?

If you don't wanna know who or what is available as companion at early stage of the game, don't read (Level 5)

Hey -

I'm in Sanctuary and I was wondering, now that you can have Codsworth as a companion, it seems I have to let Dogmeat go (either at the Station or in the Sanctuary). I know I can keep him nearby, but as for combat, does Codsworth fight? Which one will you keep by your side once you move on?

Oh Codsworth will fight alright. Took him with me from Sanctuary to Diamond City, and he fits the bill nicely.

For me Cogsworth didn't seem to allow me to recruit him. Now when I talk to him there are no conversation options. I'm guessing I missed the opportunity when I just talked to him? Either that or it's a glitch.

I haven't confirmed yet but I hear that Dogmeat as a companion allows the 'Lone Wanderer' perk to be active for extra damage resistance and carry weight--don't know if that's a bug or because he can't talk... (witch I consider a plus  )

Saving and restarting the game then usually helped me with glitches like this.

Just start talking to him after you built a couple things in Sanctuary

Cogsworth basically wants to get away from some of the people you send to sanctuary, which seems to be his trigger for becoming a companion.

Dogmeat and the companion perk works from what I have seen, basically he does not give you a perk, and you have to use Atack Dog to make him really useful.

That said when you decide to go pick up a new companion hes useful for getting to them then you can send him to his ONE AND ONLY DOGHOUSE THAT YOU PERSONALLY SET UP FOR HIM SO HE DOES NOT GET CONFUSED! (please remove all doghouses you find as soon as you find them then build him a place for his own someplace!)
