Which follower should I use?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 5:23 am

I have recently started playing FO3 again after a couple playthroughs of NV. I started up a Small Guns, Barter, Repair smooth talking Scavenger. His name is William, he will eventually become a courier for the Mojave Express. But for now, I can't decide... Do I use Charon the ghoul indentured servant who will say "I don't like the look of this place" billions of times or the Ax Crazy (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AxCrazy) patriot automaton Sargent RL-3? I have Broken Steel and will be using Dogmeat in tandem with this follower.

RL-3 becomes incredibly powerful in Broken Steel. That much I can say.

Charon. You can increase his DR for one. He's saved my butt more times than RL-3, though the bot's dialogue is far superior to Charon's.

"While sitting in his quarters" Well, i have heard of both of them. Charon, who is one of the guards at the Underworld, works for some Ghoul i was told. Nice shot i was told, rather have him at my back than at my gunpoint. Sadly, not like we would take him into the Brotherhood unfortunately, but i respect all kinds myself as long as they do not shoot at me and respect the work me and my Brothers and Sisters are doing. RL-3, now there is a Gutsy we can use in the Brotherhood, we could use that one patroling the bunker, as long as it can get rid of those quirks i heard mentioned, like revelry.....

( i would go with RL-3, though the way i play, i always end up with Fawkes)

Consider playing with no companion at all, it's not that hard, and really good fun, companions can be a pain in the butt sometimes, you have the complete freedom to act and react to you own whim and without consideration of others with you.

Hard choice if you want someone thats bad ass and gots your back all the time. Or a patoitic robot who is awesome and powerful. I had to go with the robot since it is more powerful and can with stand a great about of damage.

Charon definitely, he's by far the coolest follower of all. I love his dialogue and recruiting him for the first time was one of the most memorable things about Fallout 3. :)

I tend to perfer followers who are loyal to you no matter what your karma is like Charon, Clover, and Dogmeat. So I'd go with Charon, sure RL-3 has more health but Charon starts with a really powerful gun and he's easily customizable. RL-3 is only loyal to you if you have Neutral Karma (which is pretty hard to keep as it's easier to be either completely good or completely evil), but Charon is loyal to you no matter what so if you decide to change your karma he will still stick buy you.

Are you on PC?

RL-3 is hilarious, I definitely recommend him after playing NV as you get to hear a real Mr. Gutsy voice again! The Gutsy voices for FONV were just atrocious...they sounded like they were castrated. One of the things that really bothered me about the game after how hilariously awesome the manly, gung-ho FO3 Gutsys were.

The above statement isn't quite correct, either, you need neutral karma to hire RL-3 (unless you're on PC :D) but once hired he'll stay hired regardless of karma.

Yes but if you get seperated (which happens a lot in the main quest) and your karma has dropped or rasied above Neutral than you won't be able to rehire him untill you get Neutral Karma again. With Charon you can always rehire him regardless of what your karma is.

charon most def, give him a pre war hat and he looks pimp. Plus i just don't like rl-3, so i'm a little biased. i think its becuase you can't change rl-3 up any, and you can give charon different equipment

Yah it kinda made me mad that they couldnt put time and effort into the Robots they sounded terrible and it was better off not hearing them.

I literally flipped an unprintable when I went to Nellis AFB and the Gutsy voices sounded like that. I couldn't believe it. :(

Why, Obsidian, why?

I don't like using any follower myself. They just get in the way and make it impossible to use any other tactic than going in with guns blazing. I like using a sneak approach in the game, or luring them into a mine trap. But those approaches are out of the question if you have some moron companion that insists on rushing in at the first sign of an enemy.

I like Fawkes. When I'm with him I feel like I have an actual friend instead of a follower. I love this game.

But anyone in FO 3 is better than the Admiring Fan. He was worst than the most annoying cliffracer. Dang, I mentioned 3 games in one post! :D
